All star game highlights gives a slight indication of midfield potential also. They purposely put him there due to minimal minutes throughout the year and at the recruiters request.

Thanks Bluewoof much appriciated, I like the way Hayward hunts the ball with good kicking and marking skills.
Would be a reach at pick 5 but ceratinly has some good potenial.

Anyone still thinking that clubs simply go best available, listen to Scott Clayton on the draft podcast.

Best available means different things to different clubs and needs is simply not ignored.....it may seem as though it is but it just can't be.

They generally do, early in the draft, then look at needs later in the draft if a list is solid.

Cant see Brisbane passing up Ainsworth even if McL is still there. Elite talent some rate as the best in the draft, wants to play for the Lions, after all the go homes why would they overlook one who wants to come instead of go?

Similarly, not sure Gold Coast will draft SPS given his desire to play in Melbourne.

Both are dynamic forwards, that have spent time through the midfield, Hayward more so.

Tough call, I would lean to the homegrown again

Yeah logic dictates Ainsworth. But Hayward has been linked to us so I wonder if SOS thinks the same...

Seriously why are people talking hayward he is definitely not pick 5 worthy more late first rounder at best i would take jack scrimshaw before hayward im more than happy with sps,Taranto or brodie at 5

I think that they think they do, but develop somewhat of a bias to what the coach may have asked for and towards what other 'influential individuals' sound advice may have implanted.........Remember.......everyone thinks they have an expert talent eye.

Clayton said that they have to consider the balance of who they brought in through trade............makes for common sense to me.

They won't be though, and if they do you can always trade the player you don't need to a club that can use them. I think people expecting to get the perfect player for our needs will be sadly disappointed. Take the best available, they might even turn out better than what we already have.
I understand your point , I'm not keen on reaching fir needs I just believe we have players around that pick that could play an immediate role

Absolutely you have to keep a balanced list and trade periods are designed so clubs pick up what they need, as well as what they could miss out on in a draft. Given where out list is at, don't think we will err if we take best available

No, we won't but we'll cite best available based on needs also........we may not think we are but we will be......every team does.

Would we take another KPD, if we honestly rated him at #5 after just have taken Marchbank this year and Weitering and Plowman the year before?
Probably not, so in a roundabout way, we manufacture our 'best availables', even if we don't claim that to be the case.

We have been through this I think. No KPP around to warrant pick 5, but at pick 25 I can make a case for Brennan Cox as best available

I really love players who have a great end of season especially when they have a late birth date but I'm really not sold on Hayward at 5.
I've been on SPS all year but after watching a replay of the TAC grand final I'm starting to really want Brodie. He reminded me a lot of Selwood the way he nearly dragged his team over the line.

I think though no matter who we take it'll be easy to make an argument for why it was the best decision, such is the evenness of this draft

I've known a few scouts over the years and they've all said best available in first round and then needs base after that

Obviously if in first round the players are even then needs or other factors such as home state or injury history come into it

Then Brisbane should take SPS.....but they're more likely to side with Ainsworth given he's keen to go up and SPS would sooner play in Melbourne.

Don't worry what recruiters say as they will side with what's best for the club long term.........otherwise GWS would have taken Chad Wingard.

Pick 5 is too high for Hayward. I can see why he is going to go high, but our pick is well positioned to not have to take as big of a risk as that. We fought hard to keep pick 5 and I would be surprised if we didn't take one of the kids with more runs on the board.

If Taranto and SPS are both taken before our pick then that means either Ainsworth or McCluggage will be available. We sit in a very nice position I feel.

We won't be taking Hayward at pick 5, we would have trade down a little if we were that keen on him.
Think SOS would have been hoping that he may be there at our 2nd pick, not much chance of him still being available at pick 25, stocks have really rocketed.

Some of my draft notes

Andrew McGrath - plays like HBF.
Extremely prolific. Best HBF in the game. Small.

Will Hayward - plays like thylacine60
Mostly known for being forward. Burning question: Can he roll through the midfield, ffs? Chances of going at 5 not extinct.

Ben Ainsworth - plays like MEB_
Feisty, more powerful than listed height suggests

Tim English - plays like TheSheik.
Divides opinion, is well over 196cm

Sam Petrevski-Seton - plays like KohPhi
Silky skills, floats in and out

Luke Ryan - plays like The Old Dark Navy's
Plays defence, good at mopping up. Mature ager

Cedric Cox - Plays like SBYM
A long way from Melbourne. Go home factor at play

Sam Powell-Pepper - plays like Tony Lynn 15
Lacks class, but can be effective

I'm not saying it's totally beyond the realms of possibility that a quality midfielder won't 'fall' to our second pick but if all the proposed top 30 lists going around happen to pan out like clockwork then we start getting into the KPD and tall utility types. I wouldn't ignore them for a midfielder that we don't rate as highly.

Agree nice indeed pick 5 will be a good player one of McCluggage, McGrath, SPS , Ainsworth or Taranto will fall to us, it's exciting. Looking forward to Friday.

When I last looked at the draft, I was sure Brodie was our man. Without kicking a single footy in between reading about the draft and purely looking at stats and "expert opinion", Taranto has become the player to get. Love the stats that reads "number 1 for contested marks". Such an important statistic. Also indicates that he is a clean handler of the footy. Would also love Ainsworth if he is available.
