If it's time to holler for a Marshall does that mean it's not ready for Battle?

Interesting to read Gary Buckenara's draft analysis in the HS today that he has Cam Polson as the 36th best player in this year's draft. There was a rumour on here a few months ago about the Blues' interest in him.

36. CAM POLSON

Small forward, 177cm, 76kg, Sandringham Dragons/Haileybury Grammar

Buckenara says: Polson is a pretty clever player who has some traits that will be of interest to clubs but needs to be a bit more consistent in his efforts. Is another one of those lightly-built small forwards.

I think the issue with this, whilst logically sound in theory, is that there appears to be 4-5 KPP'S in next years draft that are better than the best of this year's class.
Marshall and Battle appear to be the best on offer this draft and will probably go between 12-25. Next year's top 10 could have 5 KPP's in it.

From what I've read next year's top 5 could have 10 KPPs in it........And Worpel.

Total lack of rumours on here at present. Club are keeping it very close to their chest.

I reckon Scrimshaw is still in the mix despite what's been said.

Over on the draft board there are a few rumours floating around, but the ones that may have the most impact for our first selection is:

- Essendon to take McGrath at Pick 1 (also apparently McGrath has told GWS he doesn't want to move interstate and will leave after 2 years if they select him)
- GWS will select Ainsworth if Essendon pick McGrath at 1

So if that were to happen, is it conceivable that McGluggage could 'slip' to our pick 5?

It has only ever been media speculation that GWS traded up to 2 to get McGrath. There is a legitimate school of thought now that they did so to gain a pick high enough that the AFL would think it too severe a penalty to remove if there are sanctions re the Whitfield affair.

I don't think they would care too much if they were to get McLuggage or Ainsworth instead; even Taranto would be a good fit.

For mine, Clem Smith was the straw that broke the camels back. Ah sh$t who am i kidding i'll believe it all over again, just hope Sos can bring a long shot home. Rookie draft is where we do ok.

All fair points but the jury still has to be out over the ability of SOS to build lists given NORMAL circumstances. there is a lot of blind faith being shown by carlton supporters in him, whilst I remain open in my assessment. I am hoping that he is great at what he does , but that is yet to be proven IMO. We cant give him too much credit for the JW selection as it pretty much was a no brainer. So the spotlight necessarily goes on to Charlie and Harry. I think we could forgive SOS if Cuningham doesnt become a great player for us , as he was taken much later, but Charlie and Harry cost us dearly in the draft both in terms of picks and in terms of players traded to get those picks. The expectation should be that these two become excellent players for us.
Unfortunately the assessment has to be delayed on these two due to their sickness and injuries, but this year is Showtime, especially for charlie as Harry has a strength that is also his weakness- his height. Unfortunately (or fortunately) he has kept growing to be around 204cm which is ruck territory, yet we expect him to be a key forward. As a key forward , many of us will be expecting him to show more that just a few glimpses of promise this year , yet as a ruckmen , many would be much more forgiving. Yet he is ruckman size.
Dont get me wrong, I am genuinely excited by by our 2015 draftees , and I am equally excited by Pickett and marchbank. Pickett because he could be an outstanding player and an excitement machine, and Marchbank because he appears to be the missing link to finish off our backline, and it would be genuinely exciting to have a dominant defence again.

We don't really have any choice but to have faith in SOS for the time being. I think so far he has done an excellent list management job, we have never been so strict on contracts, and his connections and his negotiation skills have helped to secure some very good young talent onto our list on top of a lot of top end draft picks.

Even if only Plowman becomes a 200 game player from last years trade with GWS, that will go down as a huge win for us as we basically got him for free when you take into account the exchange of first round draft picks. A genuine effort has been made to acquire as much young talent on our list as possible without decimating the list, I am a lot more confident of our long term prospects than I can remember. The Marchbank and Pickett trade is a real opportunity to provide us with genuine A-grade quality for a very good price.

In terms of the draft selections, yes the jury is still out. Weitering was a no-brainer, but yeah we need the other high draft picks to come on and become very good players for us. In the case of McKay we aren't really going to know for at least a couple of years, Curnow had a very impressive rookie year considering his injuries and illness.

SPS would be a good pickup at 5.

I was a little lukewarm on him as he didn't seem to win much of the ball, even though he was a midfielder.

But reading reports on him, it seems like that might be linked with his limited tank.

So in other words, there are absolutely no questions with regards to his technical ability, effort, attitude, endeavour and work rate.

The question marks seem to be purely on both his tank and physique, two of the easiest things to fix once you enter the system.

Hope we pick up an inside midfielder at some point, hopefully a good prospect is available at 48.

Sps is always going to be a very, very good long term prospect.. unless he's a head case or injuries. But injuries can happen to anybody.
Watch his game and you'll find a modern day midfielder or Burgoyne type hbf at worst.. he's my number one over all..basically he has everything youre looking for .
Caveat I haven't given him a psych test

not sure mccluggage will last that long but it would be nice. you would think lions will get him first.

The other rumour that may impact us is the lions not bidding on bowes. This means suns get a free hit on a player that conceivably we rated and would have picked up. Personally, i cant understand why lions would not bid on him but i guess that's why they are a basket case.

You have completely missed my point.

I.e. Tank and physique get "fixed" with hard work and are not necessarily easy to fix without the required attitude.

i think we need to give these kids especially a tall like charlie more than two years. Charlie for me may take a little longer whilst he/we work out his optimal role but i saw enough to think he will make it.

on the question of sos and his abilities for me he is already proven what he can do with our trading. Its been brilliant and he has really showed what modern contemporary trading is about. Selecting the kids is one element and its great that after seeing all of them none have screamed "dud" like for example the infamous livingston, wiggins, sporn or jordy russell.

If GC Bris Or GWS don't get academy bids early I would guess the academy system will be done. Look how hard it has been for Carlton to get 4-5 top 30 picks. These teams are getting it every year. In time it'll be a 3-4 horse race if you throw in Sydney too. I would think GC and Bris will bid against each other and we will bid against gws (setterfield).

Melb at 41 bid on gws Matthew Flynn.

Realistically last years draft has nothing on this one. A lot of high picks to go the way of academy players if clubs put the bids in. Can we really complain if we sit on our hands and don't bid??

well i guess it comes down to your rating of the player and if your happy to keep him. I really dnt think we had much opportunity to bid last year especially with what we tried to achive in focusing on the talls. the only one i suppose is keays rather than cunningham but to early to tell i think.

I think this year we may have the opportunity to bid on two bowes and or setterfield and hopefully we do.

The lions not bidding on a qld kid who many rate in the top three is beyond belief i reckon.

I can't see why they would bid on him, they won't get him & it'll only hurt them when they have academy kids come through.

the tit for tat argument is predicated on clubs allowing emotion to override their rating for the player. for me its about the player ie if next years lions have a gun then sun should bid on him regardless of whats previously happened previously.

so lions leave themselves open to being stitched up next year.

I agree he should be bid on if the Lions think he's the standout kid in the draft, but if they think he's on equal footing with a couple of others then i can't see why they'd mess with GC. If it were me, i'd let Carlton do the bidding at 5, & hopefully we do on both Setterfield & Bowes(providing a big suprise slider doesnt emerge)
