true they wont get him however it ensures that suns pay the full points for the player.

the tit for tat argument is predicated on clubs allowing emotion to override their rating for the player. for me its about the player ie if next years lions have a gun then sun should bid on him regardless of whats previously happened previously.

so lions leave themselves open to being stitched up next year.

I think you've sort of answered your own question there harris.. it wouldn't surprise me if Lions and Suns have reached an "agreement" not to raid each other's Academies.Yes, totally amounts to draft tampering but would sit in the lower range of actions in what is the cesspool of corruption, back room deals and secret handshakes that make up the AFL. Now that's my darker side of thinking coming out. It could also be they rate Ainsworth/McCluggage higher and don't want to risk missing out.:p

i tend to agree that it would indicate some sort of deal so hopefully next year the suns stab them in the back.

Over on the draft board there are a few rumours floating around, but the ones that may have the most impact for our first selection is:

- Essendon to take McGrath at Pick 1 (also apparently McGrath has told GWS he doesn't want to move interstate and will leave after 2 years if they select him)
- GWS will select Ainsworth if Essendon pick McGrath at 1

So if that were to happen, is it conceivable that McGluggage could 'slip' to our pick 5?
If we some how landed McGluggage at 5 it would be the biggest steal in draft history

Before Twomey and Quayle weigh in, this is my gut feel how it is shaping up:

1. ESS - McGrath
2. GWS - Taranto
3. BL - Ainsworth
4. GC - McCluggage
5. CAR - Petrevski-Seton (after maybe a bid on Setterfield)

Agree TW although I've got us bidding on Bowes as well as Setterfield to at least try and keep em honest .

I agree. There's no way known McLuggage will last till our pick, fairy tale stuff..

Surely Brisbane bids on Bowes... unless they have a under table agreement to never bid on each other's zone pick? Having 3 out of the 4 clubs above us with zone picks means it is highly likely we will be the first team to bid on them, meaning very little chance of picking up Taranto/Ainsworth/McCluggage

I agree he should be bid on if the Lions think he's the standout kid in the draft, but if they think he's on equal footing with a couple of others then i can't see why they'd mess with GC. If it were me, i'd let Carlton do the bidding at 5, & hopefully we do on both Setterfield & Bowes(providing a big suprise slider doesnt emerge)
Exactly. If Brisbane want Ainsworth and rate him higher than Bowes as most pundits do why would they bid on Bowes? And if the Suns rate Ainsworth higher, why would they match the bid?

Then you have the notion of deals done as part of the Hanley trade and mutual back scratching etc so all in all no chance of a bid.

Agreed. This could very well be the top 5.

"The question marks seem to be purely on both his tank and physique, two of the easiest things to fix once you enter the system".

Sorry - can't agree with this. Jaksch says hello!!!

If the desire is there = yes.

If not = never going to happen.

The question is always the same.

Is the player prepared to pay the price to maximise their potential??

I already addressed that.

SPS seems very driven to succeed.

What if it's McCluggage or McGrath on the board? Can't see them risking GC not matching.

With pick 5, I'm just crossing my fingers we don't pick the 1/2 bust players in the top 10; or the token 'try-hard' (Skully type) whose best year is his AFL draft year.

I have no idea who in the top 10 fits the above failure criteria, I just think we have had our fair share over recent years, and in terms of this rebuild, it is critical.

Ok, I haven't said anything new or insightful, or anything you don't think already. Just thought I'd up my post count one more tick!

Carry on!

With a Setterfield bid we will likely have pick 6 so that curse will guarantee a bust

Would it be appropriate, when people post their predictions for top 5 or 10 picks, to put an * next to the Essendon prediction given it was appropriated illegally?

Similar to how they are generally referenced in other threads.

Just an idea ...

I think with our first 2 picks we will end up with good afl footballers, no matter which way it falls ( still anxiously hopefully of taranto though!)

However make or break for us will be our 4 picks from 48-70. What are our options at that end of the draft?!?

One of my main concerns with SPS is he is small in stature. It's been hard watching Murph over the years knowing how much of a gun he is yet can get absolutely bullied by bigger bodies.

It's reasons like this I'd rather go a Taranto, Scrimshaw etc
