Much has been said about SPS's size. And that as a 'flashy player' he is more icing than cake.

Despite his size and skills, he is quite bash and crash. And is rated a top tackler.

I see him developing into more of a nuggety Daniel Kerr / Dan Hannebery type than a flashy Brad Hill / Adam Saad type.

This is starting to make me buy into the SPS hype. I hope i dont get dissapointed

Having given it some more thought, I think Rory Sloane is a reasonable comparison.

Inside/outside mid, hunts the ball, sticks tackles, can take a grab but doesn't do it often, more likely to set up a goal than kick one himself. Sloane's only 183cm as well.

Welcome to BigFooty - you must be new around these parts.

Yeah it will probably be Hayward or someone we though could be possible but a bit of a reach at pick 5, Indisputably talented possibley a pick 10 to 15 range for me.
Go Baggers

It's not a matter of who I "like".

I only care about who will be making the greatest contribution to our club in 5 years time.

IMO Taranto is a safer choice than SPS.

He has cranked out higher SuperCoach points than any other player, plays inside/outside, takes contested marks, kicks goals and there is no "go home" risk at all.

If Taranto is not available I am not sure what I would do as I don't know enough about the other options relative to SPS.

PS - and I have made this point a number of times in previous posts.
I think a lot of us agree with you on Taranto, he would be a great get. It just looks a long shot.

I feel like this needs to be a thing.

Every year on draft night, order Chinese dishes based on our selection of draft picks.

Yeah except others bid on dishes and you are about to start eating you #25 - Mongolian Lamb and suddenly it gets taken away and you end up with #27 - vegetarian cabbage based soup.

I agree to an extent. Players sub 180cm can be very good players. However, which midfielders stand up and dominate when the game is on the line...

Dangerfield - 189cm
Josh P. Kennedy - 188cm
Pendlebury - 191cm
Bontempelli - 192cm
Fyfe - 190cm
Cripps - 195cm
D. Martin - 187cm
Parker - 183cm

Not saying the sub 180cm player list doesn't contain some fine players. I'd just rather have these taller mids as they seem to influence through the midfield more and aren't as limited position wise. They can go forward or back and still influence. Not sure a Lachie Neale type can do much more than win the clearance.

What about players like Daniel Wells 181cm, he plays both inside and outside.
Think with SPS because he has elite kicking skills and pace, he could also be used across half back or half forward to great effect.
If we do pick SPS we add him to Sumner Pickett Boekhorst and Cuningham and all of a sudden we start to have some real speed on our list. Exciting times !

Wonder if he could do a job down back as a small-medium running defender.

Do we need more of them? Seems it is wing/half forward or bust.

Think if an interstate club takes Taranto, SOS could just target him in 2 years time.
I'm still not sure about Taranto as a pure mid.
He is very impressive as a half forward, but not sure if he would add what we need most in our midfield, we desperately need some elite ball use and pace.

With Tuohy gone, Byrne out injured and Sheehan probably one major injury away from an early retirement, there could be a spot for Boeky down there.

There's talk of using Lamb down back, or Buckley - I just wonder if Boekhorst could be considered as well. Given our other acquisitions, he may struggle to cement a spot at HF. I dunno if he's got the defensive game to do it, but he'd certainly be handy running off HB, provided he's not a liability when the ball is coming in there.

think SPS is a lock. in and out mid who will provide that run we need

only see Taranto being available to us if McCluggage goes No.1

Not sure McLuggage at 1 makes a difference.

McLuggage - McGrath - Ainsworth - Taranto - ???
McGrath - Taranto - Ainsworth - McLuggage - ???
McGrath - Ainsworth - McLuggage - Taranto - ???

The only way I see us getting him is if GWS or Brisbane bid on Bowes (unlikely), or if Essendon pull out a Setterfield bid at 1 (which I think is actually a slight chance), which could see Taranto slide to us regardless of whether GWS matched.

McLuggage - McGrath - Bowes - Ainsworth - Taranto
Setterfield - McGrath - Ainsworth - McLuggage - Taranto

That's a good comparison. Seems to have added a little bit of bulk in between his 2015 and 2016, which suggests he's got the scope to get bigger. Once he gets into an AFL environment, he'll flourish.

Not really. Has speed, has evasive skills. Really feel a lack of continuity is hurting him. He isn't a SOS player though and they will want to push Cuningham ahead of him so he needs to have some luck this year.

Yes he does possess those attributes .
But he also has an aversion to physical contact which he will have to overcome if he is to survive in the Bolton regime .
"Get comfortable being uncomfortable"
I reckon there is a subtle difference between us thinking our players will make the grade and hoping they will .
A good measure is , if we were asked to wager $500 of our hard earned on whether they will make it or not , the answer is a lot easier and clearer .

I wonder if there was this much conjecture if SPS was a white dude?

The overt or underlying racism ITT is crazy.
I think there is more to it then that. I am a big fan of him but he has not set the world on fire this season and is also physically just as developed as a player like Brodie who is also 6months younger then him which can mean a lot at their age. He has injury problems and he probably hasn't came on as much as some were hoping so maybe his upside isn't as high as we were thinking 6 months ago so their is legitimate question marks over him. I would still love to have him but.

You see, I don't think all the questions are necessarily coming from a bad place.....and shouldn't always be linked to 'racism' just because we seem to enjoy applying the code of political correctness upon anyone that raises any queries when it comes an indigenous individual.
Ideally we shouldn't even have terms that apply to people of different colour/ethnicity/religion........but we just haven't grown up yet and we're sort of stuck with them for now, at least.

There have been some situations of late that may force some to look at the whole picture again, but ultimately, individuals should be respected for who they are.................individuals. Every case is different and that's what some of us forget..........which we really shouldn't.

SPS has the talent and if SOS and co are comfortable in him becoming the player we see him becoming, we take him. Not much else to think about.

SPS is much more a Kerr/Burgoyne type more so than an outside flashy Hill type.

Just because he is indigenous, I think a lot of people are thinking this. Very much the opposite.

Let me add - nothing wrong with having an opinion, everyone has one, doesn't make you stupid or racist.
