I wonder if there was this much conjecture if SPS was a white dude?

The overt or underlying racism ITT is crazy.
It's not the colour of his skin that worries me.
I grew up in the bush and know what it is like to have to make your own way in a big city with no family there to support you.
It is not easy - and trying to do this while a full time athlete with huge expectations on you = serious pressure.

Will he be able to deal with it?

Talk is cheap.

"I can't wait to play footy in ...........".

How many times have we heard similar lines from players who within a few years were out the door?

If he is way ahead of other options then we should take him - if not I would not take the risk.

The only person who continuously brings up the issue of racism is you!!! To my knowledge there has not been one person on this board who has suggested that SPS be excluded from being drafted to the Carlton Football Club on the grounds of colour, creed, race, religion or sex.

I can't speak for others here, but I am insulted and offended at being labelled as racist!!! You also made the same accusations when I questioned Pickett's credentials despite making no mention of his colour, creed, race, religion or sex!!! Now knock it off!!!

If you have any concerns that anyone on this board is being racist then take your concerns to the mods and they will act accordingly. Thats what they are there for.

What he says!!!!!

For our second round pick I want someone with a bit of mongrel in them and thats something i see in Drew and its something we have lacked since the departure of Robbo. Dont want a bully or coward who snipes, just a solid midfielder who puts his head over the footy hard with courage and will be the first to stand up for his team mates.
Cripps will cop all the attention from opponents so we are going to need a player that the opposition will know is coming for them if something happens

Cripps goes down and you realise that Will Brodie is an important get. That's a huge loss for us and we look weak as p1ss without him in the side.

The way I feel is that I'm split on Taranto and SPS, but Taranto will be gone by our pick, so the choice is easy.

He's not missing any of the season at this point.
He's missing the whole pre season and that means he will be off pace for most of the year. Such is the level and professionalism now of these players if you miss more than half of pre season you will look off the pace for half the year. Sorry but that's how it goes.

I agree to an extent. Players sub 180cm can be very good players. However, which midfielders stand up and dominate when the game is on the line...

Dangerfield - 189cm
Josh P. Kennedy - 188cm
Pendlebury - 191cm
Bontempelli - 192cm
Fyfe - 190cm
Cripps - 195cm
D. Martin - 187cm
Parker - 183cm

Not saying the sub 180cm player list doesn't contain some fine players. I'd just rather have these taller mids as they seem to influence through the midfield more and aren't as limited position wise. They can go forward or back and still influence. Not sure a Lachie Neale type can do much more than win the clearance.

no way Cripps should be on that list....he's a KPF being played out of position:p

Quayle said on Twitter she'd be doing a mock draft on the top 20 or so. Think she implied it would be out at some stage tomorrow

what i have been fearing all week.

say GWS select Taranto if McGrath is no.1, would lions pass on Ainsworth for McCluggage ?

All the noise of Ainsworth and the Lions being as keen as each other to make it happen suggest they would stay with Ainsworth I would think. Hopefully that comes after a Lions bid on Bowes, leaving us with a decision between McGluggage and SPS. Though I guess it depends on who GWS take at pick two. Some suggesting Ainsworth, some have suggested Taranto, should Mcgrath go to Essendon.

What do make of Sheik's rumour that we might take Yazz with a very late pick? I'm all for it. Still only 25. We know what he's capable. Mental health can be a tricky thing to deal with, but I wonder how much that had to do with Richmond's decision to let him go. Could it have been more fitness related? Missing a year of footy would take a huge toll on the body. Sorry if this has already been covered in the thread. I trawled back through a few pages and couldn't find much talk.

Just taking a longer look at Willem Drew since he is starting to appear more consistently at our second pick.

The write ups are decent:

Knightmare - ESPN September

Player focus
Playing with great heart and an intensity that matches his red hair, North Ballarat Rebels midfielder Willem Drew -- for the second week in a row -- was named his team's best player. Drew gathered 24 disposals including 16 contested possessions, took five marks and laid nine tackles to go with a goal and score assist. As he has done all year, the 188cm midfielder played with an intensity greater than anyone else on the field.

What has been most impressive from Drew is his ferociousness on the field. Several of Drew's tackles during the game, particularly one in the final quarter, left opponents very slow to get up. His ground ball work and ability to burst through tackles at full speed is a sight to behold. In addition to his sublime inside work, it was also promising to see Drew finding space on the outside as well getting into the right positions behind the ball.

When teammate Hugh McCluggage was taken to ground by two Geelong Falcons players, Drew went straight to the aid of his teammate, pushing the two Geelong instigators back and making it clear he stood for none of that.

Analysis

Drew is viewed as a likely second or third round prospect. However, a positive draft combine along with a strong finish to the TAC Cup finals could mean Drew pushes for first-round selection.

His contested style of game, which sees him win a high percentage of ball in the tight contests, is a feature that translates to AFL level. Drew has also managed to kick 11 goals from his 12 matches this season and is certainly a marking threat forward of centre, while also having the skills required to play in the backline.

One comment several recruiters have made about Drew is, he has the habit of kicking for territory from stoppages rather than lowering his vision to hit up a target. So it is clear he needs to work on identifying targets around the ground as he will not want to continue being limited with his disposal.

If Drew can adjust his decision-making around the stoppages and provide more meaningful drives, his game will reach a whole new level.
------------------------------------------------------

Emma Quayle:

27. Willem Drew
Midfielder
Height: 188cm
Weight: 80kg

You can miss a lot of Drew's best work on first look: he gives the ball off almost as soon as it lands in his hands at times. He takes hits, lays tackles, works hard and has the versatility to do all those things in all three parts of the ground. Can be trusted to look after an opponent and while he prefers the quick give to moving the ball has good endurance that will become a valuable trait when he is better able to use it. He's an understated player but a competitive one, whose effort doesn't vary from week to week.
--------------------------------------------------------

Callum Twomey:

Drew isn't the type of player to have a wowing highlights reel but he works his way around the ground without stress and finds the ball on a regular and consistent basis. He's clever with his hands and tough inside the contest, and as a midfielder was one of Vic Country's best players across its carnival. Drew is the nephew of former Blue Adrian Gleeson (and the cousin of current Bomber Martin), so there would be some symbolism if he headed to Carlton.
----------------------------------------------------------

TAC Stats

15 games, named in bests 14 times, 12 goals - consistent performer, consistent goalkicker

Disposals 21.93
Kicks 13.4
Handballs 8.53
Efficiency 60% - needs to improve
Marks - 4 per game
Contested marks - 8 in total. Reasonable for a mid
Hitouts - 28 so is a genuine third man up worker
Tackles - 7.4 per game. Massive

201 102-81
128

It wouldn't be a reach in any way, just a hard working mid with little in the way of x factor. No frills selection but maybe that's what we want. Toughness, hard work and consistency week in, week out.

I'm sold.

LOLz @ the sham that is the AFL. Charged GWS too late to strip them of picks. Holy shit they are corrupt.

To be fair, the AFL and ASADA only had 18 months to investigate.

And they had to do complicated things like read a few text messages and interview like 4 people....

Carlton charged on the 11th November. We cooperated. Had a hearing on the 23rd. Penalties applied immediately the day before the draft.

As I've said elsewhere, the AFL scheduled a special meeting the evening before the 2002 Draft, and didn't finish till two o'clock in the morning to ensure that they removed us from that draft.

For some strange reason they don't seem to have that same determination to ream GWS.

You can drop selections 70, 81, 99, and 117 as we won't be using them. Plenty of wet, warm towels sounds good for a rookie selection though.
