You're joking right?

nope, if the club thinks we are a chance to win a premiership in the next couple years but need a stronger midfield, then this draft will not accomplish that. The likely hood of getting a midfielder who will have an impact in his first 3-4 years is small even when you have pick 1 let alone pick 13.

If a midfielder is who we need then a trade is the only real option, if we are certain we will be making a future trade it helps to pick a player who will likely have the most value.

Pick 13 wasn't enough for Carlton this year, but the kid who we take with that pick could potentially be worth more than a first-round pick after the next season.

We were prepared to give up pick 13 this year, so we will potentially be prepared to give up the kid who we take with 13 next year.

Interesting to see how that unfolds if it were to happen. I wonder if a deficit could be applied to picks they trade in, which they'll no doubt do, seeing as they have 2 players in their academy who are tipped to go top 5 at this stage (obviously a lot can happen in a year).

Sheeet.

I thought GWS might not be able to wriggle out of this so had a look at the F-S Bidding System rules (2015) - and assuming it still applies - it is exactly if they get penalised by losing picks next year that they can wriggle a bit. From the doc:

• If a Nominating Club does not have enough points to secure a F/S or Academy selection in a given Draft, the points required will carry over to the Club’s first selection the following year.
o In this case, points will be deducted prior to the trade period to ensure the Nominating Club pays it points debt, rather than trades picks away.

So any carried over deficit gets deducted from their premiership table defined picks (which could be 3rd round onwards if they lose 1st & 2nd rounders), and then they can trade in 1st/2nd round picks which wont get affected at all by any carried over deficit points.

AFL house must be feeling warm and fuzzy about this.

Sheeet. Sheeet. Sheeet!

On the bright side, this would still eat away a bit of their stash of 1st round drafted players that can cash in moving forward.

Not sure about the Gallucci bit but overall, I agree with this post.

I think in terms of what we need and would like in terms of midfielder, Venables is the type that fits the best. Big body, can play inside and has has the break away speed from stoppage, strong overhead and it a goal kicker when he plays forward. If his medical comes up great, I would be stoked if we pick up this kid. I feel his upside is enormous. Once you get his fitness up to the AFL midfield standard, he will be a beast.

I know people want immediate impact but I am patient and looking at the long term here. I want to get the best player from this draft in the long run, like we did with Dangerfield. Immediate impact would be nice but I want a superstar in the long run. If it means we wait 3 years before he starts getting "tagged" then so be it.
Venables is certainly another one who fits the bill, as is Berry. I would be happy with either of these two or Gallucci but like you I am hoping that we get the best player possible. If there is a better player available at 13 then I hope we pick him. I have no doubt that our recruiters have a good understanding of the talent order so I am not going to complain either way but hopefully it is a case where the best available happens to be a player of need.

I'm not au fait with the latest upcoming talent, but I will say two things:

- I'm bloody sick of this academy shit whereby Sydney and GWS can grow their own exclusive talented veggies that basically no one else can touch. Expect our Pick 13 to become Pick 17 or whatever.
- We desperately need a good midfielder, but doubt whether our pick 13 from tonight is going to be ready in time for a flag challenge in the next few years. The kid we select tonight may be part of our rebuilt premiership side in 5-10 years' time. I don't want to wait that long for the chance to win a flag, dammit.
And the bulk of them are developed under Victorian coaches in the Victorian TAC Comp along with the Victorian Private School/College Footy System which is a very strong competition in itself...

I think clubs should have to relinquish their academy rights to a player if they send them off to the TAC Cup/SANFL/WAFL like Setterfield and Cumming did this year.

Agree, big fan of Venables, just doesn't seem to be on our radar judging by the "expert" opinion, so not getting my hopes up there.

I think Gallucci offers a great mix between inside and out, my main concern with him is his size, but has a lot of weapons.
His size? 186 cm is a very nice size for a mid. He is taller that any regular midfielders in our side. I am more worried about foot injuries.

Although the phantoms don't mean much this year, everyone seems certain that Brodie wont slip down past Sydney's pick. He sounds to me on description the exact player we needed :'(
Sydney need some speed ......they've already, via Academies got a couple of beauties to go into the midfield

Anything could happen

Even English to Crows wouldn't completely shock

Please no
I'll take a $10,000 bet on that not happening .....credit card acceptable ;)

We know now that our Dangerfieldless/soon-to-be-Thompsonless midfield is thin
Sure but draftees won't fix that this year or next. I am expecting a big play for a Mid in next years trade period. I know that's the definition of insanity.

Potentially 4 players from the same club (Sandringham Dragons) to go in the top 10 .....now that's some record !!
