Anyone else get a bit of the "go home" feel from the way SPP talks about the West Coast Eagles?
Really don't want to lose a player we will have invested a 1st Round Pick and a lot of time into again.

East Perth draft hopeful Sam Powell-Pepper’s AFL dream inspired by West Coast ‘06 flag

SAM Powell-Pepper remembers the day when he knew he wanted to become an AFL footballer.

Watching his beloved West Coast clinch a nail-biting one-point Grand Final win over Sydney in 2006, Powell-Pepper couldn’t help but be inspired by the club’s star-studded engine room.

Ten years on, the Eagles are one of many clubs interested in the big-bodied East Perth midfielder ahead of the AFL National Draft on November 25.

The 18-year-old trained with the Eagles last pre-season, and is right under their nose thanks to the Royals’ alignment with West Coast.

And with a bit of luck on draft day, he might well play for them in 2017.

“Probably that ticking moment was when we won the Grand Final in ‘06, I just wanted to play AFL ever since then,” Powell-Pepper told The Sunday Times.

“Just watching how Daniel Kerr, Chris Judd, Dean Cox and Benny Cousins went about it, I always tried to model myself on their game.

“It’s a bit unreal having those coaches like (‘06 premiership Eagles) Mark Nicoski and Adam Selwood down at Tuesday trainings helping us out with our footy.

“Simmo (senior coach Adam Simpson) is always there before the game and during games.”

Likened to Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin because of his hardness and ability to brush off tacklers, Powell-Pepper is rated as a first-round draft pick following a dominant year at WAFL and national under-18s level.

The Mt Hawthorn junior averaged 22 disposals and booted 12 majors from eight colts games this year before getting his chance in the reserves and a late-season league debut for the Royals.

He went on to play five senior games, including an elimination-final loss to Peel Thunder, alongside a number of Eagles-listed players — including Jack Redden, Eric Mackenzie and Liam Duggan.

“I felt like I’ve had a pretty consistent year, starting with colts and being consistent through the (state) 18s,” Powell-Pepper said. “Playing some reserves games then making my league debut later in the season, I think it was overall a successful year. Just playing alongside the Eagles’ players and some of the East Perth greats like Craig Wulff and Paul Johnson was an honour and a proud moment for me.”

Powell-Pepper, powerfully built for a midfielder at 187cm and 90kg, knows he’s done everything he can heading into draft day.

He’s confident he can make an impact at AFL level if given the chance.

“It’s just a waiting game, I’ll just keep training hard and make sure I’m not losing my fitness,” he said. “I’d like to make an impact on the team within the first year, hopefully the size of me now gives me that advantage.”

They most likely wont because of their midfield depth

At pick 54, GWS had already matched bids for five players so thats how we got Mutch. He's a nice addition to our midfield.
No way a ball magnet like Mutch slips through to pick 54 IMO, I'd expect him to be long gone by then..

Can't see Adelaide taking Berry they have a history of not wanting injured players, personally I would have him in the mix but with a shoulder recon and shoulder injury again and knee problems this year can see Adelaide being precautionary like last year

I'd take Sproule or Mutch with our Pick 43 without even blinking if either were still there, I really rate Sproule a fair bit higher than some, really like his mobility for a big lad and can see him developing into either key roles at CHF or CHB. Think Himmelberg might be on our radar too at 43 if still there.
Sproule I'm not so high on. He's a good kick on him and very mobile, but I reckon he needs to develop more game awareness. It's really important for KPP's to be aware of what's going on in front of them. Mutch would be a great get at 43, not only can he accumulate like hell but he kicks well off both sides. Himmelberg's decision making is quite shaky, hopefully he can fix that because he has the aggressiveness combined with the athleticism to potentially be a nice KPD.
It was flip of a coin but Simpkin is a player who has shown that he is a big game player and become that match winner which we might not get with Berry.
Personally I'm not entirely sure about Simpkin with 13 myself, quite outside from what I've seen and I'm not sure that's a desperate need? Berry seems to have more aggression and ability to go into the guts, which I reckon is what we need.

Reckon WCE will pick him up anyway, so I doubt it matters.

Lever. Dear. Even Doedee had some injury issues last year, IIRC? That's 3 in the last two years, we're definitely not allergic to it.

Yeah, just like we were with Jake Lever..

yeah, just like we traded for Curtly Hampton.

yeah, like we re-signed Brad Crouch.

etc etc etc

That's why clubs contract Doctors, Surgeons, Physios and spend big on rehab equipment etc.......to get their expert opinions and knowledge.

Edit : forgot about Harry Dear and Doedee too

I reckon we can still find some inside midfield depth in the later parts of the draft. Classy balanced midfielders, injured or not, don't last long in drafts. Simpkin can play inside but won't be a big ball winner. That's where I think CEY comes into the mix.

Better rule the line through Daniel Venables, Jack Scrimshaw, Jy Simpkin, Alex Witherden etc.....but hang on they all most likely go 1st round...

I suppose they will make a decision on it, and if they find it's an ongoing problem cop the pain for picking up an injury prone player. But without those injuries he is top 10 so could be worth the risk

What a p!ss weak bunch those idiots at both VFL House and ASADA are. This is yet another case for the WADA to step in and just give all the 4 year ban they are meant to be getting. Having said that it's more than I was expecting, I thought it would be watered down to a 3 game ban like the NRL allowed itself to be railroaded into agreeing to. This sort of rubbish undermines any credibility these sporting codes still possess.

As far as the draft picks go it should be the first 3 picks minimum at the very least, one for each manager and one for the player. Now that would have to include the #2 pick. The precedent has been set, remember the year we traded Kane Johnson to Richmond for pick 4, that became pick 2 after Carlton was suddenly penalized for tanking. They had no compunction is screwing us and Richmond over for another team's mistake.

Still whatever bans they get it will be far above the slap of the wrist the Injector club received for
drugging an entire team. The whole thing still makes me feel sick.

Above anything, I'd be looking to take best available with 13. Whether that's an inside mid or not I don't know, but I'd be looking to preference one of them before anyone else, especially considering there will be a few around our pick (SPP, Venables, Berry). But hey, if Scrimshaw or Hayward are there as well and we take them, I'll be happy (doubt those two are there, though).

Overall, I'd be looking to take three inside midfielders (preferably versatile ones), with one of them being mature aged; one outside mid, one KPP (preferably late, e.g. McCarthy/McLarty) and Jarman.

Definitely worth the risk. You have to take players based on talent. If they become injury prone, so be it. That's definitely how we've drafted in the past.

I looked at that picture ,his hands in particular and thought, "Wow those fingers are WMD for chicks".:D

They know they have created a monster with too many early concessions so this could be the opportunity to real them back in a bit
Oh i think because GWS is an AFL Franchise & controlled by the AFL .....any perceived light treatment in relation to the Essendon penalties, will simply create a storm that'll encompass another AFL season

Am i correct in saying the AFL initially dismissed the emails coming from the girlfriend ....and only when the girl went to the media did the AFL get out of their armchair?

:thumbsu:.....yep, really like Sproule at that level in the draft .....Mutch as well

I haven't read of that Wayne but it wouldn't surprise. I did read where Whitless was claiming he had a migraine.

In my phantom draft I had us taking Jy SImpkin, Sam Walker, Kobe Mutch, Matt Guelfi, Ben Jarman and Connor Noonan
Why i tend to disagree with Simpkin is the fact we have so may of a similar size in the midfield ......and i doubt he'll give us the inside work we need .....good player mind you, but IMO this draft with its evenness will have clubs picking to needs more than ever b4

Heard that, heard the AFL dismissed the texts as that of a disgruntled ex girlfriend ......as i understand the AFL were very slow to react to the issue, until it became public

I like Mutch.
We all do, only thing he projects similar to Matt Crouch [That's not a bad thing btw], not quick, ball magnet, better kick but not overly penetrating. Can't see him slipping through to our 3rd round pick as suggested here let alone Pick 43 personally. Tex will be all for it with the Broken Hill link.
