West AdelaideThose are big statements ......it's like saying Venables has Dangerfield type qualities ...it just creates a picture and raises expectations, which in most cases is not appropriateIf you've notices, I've actually been a Berry fan for quite a while. I'm not just 'believing the hype'.
Fact is, he hasn't had the chance to showcase his abilities this year through injury, and by all reports he was very good when given a go through the midfield, using some pace, a decent boot and endurance running to have an impact.
I'm certainly not saying he's Hodge - merely that he has some of those Hodge-like qualities that will stand him in very good stead in the AFL. Reckon he'll definitely be a very good player. He's still very much my second preference to Venables, though.

No-one is saying Berry is a poor player, in fact anyone in the top 25 can be considered a good AFL prospect ......but now we're talking about who's the best of the best for #13

Saying a player has some of the qualities of someone else shouldn't put an exact image of that player in their heads. Venables certainly has some Dangerfield/Judd traits, Berry certainly has some Hodge traits. Even someone like a Myles Poholke has a bit of Luke Parker about him. Am I saying they'll all turn into those players, though? No.Those are big statements ......it's like saying Venables has Dangerfield type qualities ...it just creates a picture and raises expectations, which in most cases is not appropriate

They picked up Apeness a few years back, so it's not like he's allergic to recruiting those typesIMO don't think this is Lyons form of recruiting ........4 year projects string beans .....he's more for the ready made type of player or who have a shorter development
I'll be amazed if English goes to Freo in the draft ......i've said English wouldn't go first round, but that was b4 Gold Coast accumulated 4 first round picks ......they're probably the ones who'll gamble with one of the 4 picks

West AdelaidePick 17 .....will they go Project Player at #7 ......highly highly unlikely IMOThey picked up Apeness a few years back, so it's not like he's allergic to recruiting those types
Still think it's definitely a possibility. Doubt they'll go for Logue, with Pearce and now Hamling on board. Their midfield is stacked. What they need badly are elite KPF's... and a Sandi replacement. At this stage, I reckon they'll go all out for a De Koning or CCJ next year, and grab English this year.Pick 17 .....will they go Project Player at #7 ......highly highly unlikely IMO
West AdelaideJust a massive risk to take a string bean ruckman in top 10 .........he's fancied not for his ruckwork, but his around the ground mobility .....IMO wrong emphasisSaid it before the best rucks in the comp are the likes of Goldstein, Sandilands, Mumford they weren't great in their younger years but as they grew and got big they got dominant
Nic Nat is the only one who had it young but I find him inconsistent
West AdelaideIMO Petrevski-Seton is target #1 for Freo .......however if gone, it won't surprise to see the local WA boy Logue go to Freo ......very flexible, not just a backman, he did ruck for parts of an U18 Championship game and played forward ......only a short period in the game follow from rowing, massive upside, and a touch of Adam Goodes about himStill think it's definitely a possibility. Luenberger was rated even higher than English for same reasons ........Luenberger has struggled to stay fit, and as he put on weight to compete in the ruck, he lost that flexibility
Luenberger should have been able to play as that forward / Ruck where Brisbane attempted to play him in his last season at Brisbane ......but he failed
Luenberger >>>>>>>English
Well we could always compare Hughey McCluggage with Brad Crouch if we truly had NFI.....Saying a player has some of the qualities of someone else shouldn't put an exact image of that player in their heads. I actually have Berry at 13 on my power rankings. FWIW, I have Venables at 10, then it goes Perryman, Florent, Berry, Scrimshaw, SPP and Hayward. Would be happy with any of those players (we won't be getting Perryman, though).

West AdelaideThis was Paul Roos criticism of taking thin talls, when he was at Sydney ......you don't know whether they will fill out and developWe have been burnt by doing exactly that drafting top 10 ruckmen. Then we get someone like Hudson who was pretty good for us and cost bugger all. Some players fill out some don't, someone like Westhoff for Port has grown but never become a beast if he had he could probably dominate.
Will SPS be their target with the likes of Sill, Bill, Weller, Tucker in their side as more outside players? Don't get me wrong, I really like Logue, he's number 9 in my power rankings and at the worst, I reckon he can turn into an Alex Rance, with his ceiling being a tall, brute midfielder, although I think the KPD situation is more likely. Because of this, I don't think Freo will see him as an absolute need, and they'll take the WA prospect that's a bigger need instead.IMO Petrevski-Seton is target #1 for Freo .......however if gone, it won't surprise to see the local WA boy Logue go to Freo ......very flexible, not just a backman, he did ruck for parts of an U18 Championship game and played forward ......only a short period in the game follow from rowing, massive upside, and a touch of Adam Goodes about him

Backs: Tom Doedee, last year's No.17 overall pick, is developing nicely as a key defender.
The priority: More depth in the midfield, specifically outside run, would be perfect, especially with veteran Scott Thompson to retire after next season. - Lee Gaskin

Berry also has "this" in common with Hodge and something we've really lacked since the Bickley, Riccuitto days....If you've notices, I've actually been a Berry fan for quite a while. I'm not just 'believing the hype'.

. Kelly is not a KPD either.Berry also has "this" in common with Hodge and something we've really lacked since the Bickley, Riccuitto days....
When assessing WCE's needs at Pick 12 Cal Twomey said this :
Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: There isn't a lot of speedy midfield options at the top end of the draft. Jordan Gallucci brings that but No.12 might be a touch too high for him, while Jy Simpkin is at this stage more of a half-forward than midfielder. Athletically, Jarrod Berry might fit the bill. He can play in a number of spots, run all day and has a genuine tough streak.
Wishful thinking and then some Brodie slips through to Pick 13, would be one of the most monumental downgrades in the history of the National Draft, as a midfielder he's probably the most "pure" mid in this draft at this stage of his development, has both an inside and outside game, explosive speed from the contest, runs both ways...only very slight knock is his footskills, can tend to rush his disposal at time. He's a genuine GUN and certain to play AFL in his first year. Cal's usually around the mark but Brodie is zero chance at getting through to Pick 13 IMO, think Cal might have been rushed to beat a deadline for the article or something because that isn't happening. If Brodie slides then hell yes to that. Would take Brodie over Venables if available, but I can't see that happening.
Can't agree with the tough streak comment Bicks, the Crouch brothers, Lever and Sloane would definitely not be described as soft. Hell, even the way McGovern and Cameron hit the ball and man could be described as viscous. I like hard players, and we are beginning to accumulate some genuinely hard edged types.

We have some tough competitors nowadays however - crouch brothers and Sloane ... Lever and Laird. We lack dynamic mids but are a better tackling team and tougher than we were even 3 years agoBerry also has "this" in common with Hodge and something we've really lacked since the Bickley, Riccuitto days....

Agree with this , we are tougher nowadays but lack ruthless edge of those guysHawthorn have a different type of hard nut their players like hodge Mitchell Lewis went hard for the ball but went out of their way to hurt their opposition we don't have any like that. I remember Viska, Ricciutto guys like that were hard but like to inflict damage on their opponents it intimidated them. Brisbane were good at it when they had the Scott boys and hawthorn are the masters
