Strategy 2016 Forward Line

What are you hoping/thinking we will do in those respects?
To be honest I don't know. So much depends in our effectiveness in the clearances. With our potential injuries and with little form to judge Smith on. If our clearances don't improve our gameplan will only change superficially. If in the other hand our clearence work improves I expect to see a lot of long fast ball movement 2 KPFs + resting ruckman to stop the opposing KPDs from working together playing a full press to maximise the number of stoppages.

Totally agree that much is dependent on how well we improve our delivery inside 50. It was constipated in 2015 and a source of many of our issues.

I honestly, blame Stokes and to a lesser extent Sj - the amount of times they got the ball only to hold onto it for 5 minutes. FMD.

yup, coupled with a lack of consistent leading targets and more generally, movement in the F50 ..

if Menzel can play regular footy he'll go some way to addressing some of that; he has a few strings to his bow, one of which is knowing when and where to lead.

Hawkins will need to get on his bike a lot more; cannot continue to be content with outmarking his opponent in the square on the rare occasions he gets a one-on-one.

IF you expected Geelong to be the big improver in 2016 simply on the back of Patrick Dangerfield’s arrival think again.

The latest instalment of Champion Data’s quality rankings reveals a lack of firepower that could come back to haunt the Cats.

It should come as no surprise Tom Hawkins is Geelong’s best forward but the Cats’ attack is ranked 12th against the rest of the competition.

The Cats, whose overall list quality is rated sixth, have just three players — Hawkins, Lachie Henderson and Steven Motlop — inside the top 35 per cent of all forwards in the competition.

Champion Data ranks young Cats Darcy Lang and Cory Gregson in the average (middle 30 per cent) while Shane Kersten is rated below average (bottom 35 per cent).

I'd take no interest in the opinion of the author of that article. He has Cyril Rioli as Hawthorn's best forward.

Haven't you heard, he does things that only Cyril can do. :D

Like guard space.

Thanks STP18 Finally that thread has it's benefits

Kersten rated below average. No surprises there, think you pick one might be right. No offers at the end of the year

If we don't find a small forward who can kick between 30-40 goals we'll struggle.

Menzel is capable but is it too much to ask so soon after an extensive lay-off.

I'm not sure McCarthy is ready as talented as he is, and Gregson and Lang are playing further up the ground.

I'd be prepared to say that with a Luke Bruest in the hoops, we'd win the flag this year.

There is a lot ref to past stats for this pre-season... yet I feel our side in particular has changed drastically. I will say that I feel we lack a small forward with real goal shark nous... but I feel we want to have multiple mids chiming in for 1 or 2 a game. Hawk is good for 3 and Vardy presents us a play who can get goals on the board... so to me its the goal shark . The livewire forward that can create a goal that we just do not have.

But I still feel we have enough , if our guys stay fit. 4 goals a quarter should be our min target without leaking goals like a man on light beer ... stop the over the heads , stop the turnovers, improve the cb domination the speed on our i50's and our forwardline stats will go up.

We lack someone cause we don't like recruiting players like a Betts who are one role specific.

We like our players to be adaptable with the ability to play a variety of roles.

I look forward to Smith resting in the back pocket on Breust at varying stages of round 1.

That's definitely true, plus there also aren't that many genuine good small forwards in the comp
Almost every club bar Geelong has one.

Sydney, Richmond and a phlanx of lower-ladder teams don't have good small forwards, which makes sense - small players, unless they're Rioli or Betts, generally play midfield and are pushed forward when they are selected in a very good team.

I should add that we do, it's just that he's had four knee recos in a row, and Gregson is developing in the role.

That's true, but the flipside is that for players who are one-role-specific (i.e. Josh Walker, George Horlin-Smith) they do struggle to get a game if the queue is long. We've done pretty well out of having small forwards who play midfield when required (Ablett, Chapman, SJ, Stokes).

Sydney have McGlynn and now Heeney. I don't know about you but Heeney looks to be one of the most exciting young players in the competition.
Your right about Richmond, apart from Lloyd, they have never really had a damaging small forward. Not since the Nathan Brown days.
They may have realized and addressed this issue in the off season and went about acquiring Chris Yarran who is more than capable of playing small forward on a permanent basis and booting 30+ goals.

Heeney, McGlynn and Edwards. Even Brisbane have Green who is a quality small and underrated at that.

I also laugh every time Rioli is mentioned in the same breath as quality. The most overhyped, overrated player of this generation.

Agree about Heeney....got "star" written all over him.

Richmond can have Yarran....

Heeney will be a gun but he will end up a mid. McGlynn kicked 6 goals from 9 games in 2015.
