Strategy 2016 Forward Line

Who's our forward coach cause Caracella didn't have a clue.
My lineup would be

HF: Cockatoo Stanley Duncan
F: Taylor Hawkins Menzel

* (On The Interchange) - McCarthy, Motlop

Taylor would play extremely well up forward. He would allow Hawkins to lead and we have sufficient players to crum and score. It's time for Gardner to get a go up back, this sends Harry up forward.

Taylor is virtually finished as a footballer. He has one year left on his contract? Why even go down that road for? This team needs to be reinvigorated and the last thing we need moving forward is for a champion defender to spend his final year at CHF negating the potential development of a younger player. Are we winning a flag next year? No we ain't. Stanley is also a mediocre forward. He's good when he starts in ruck and then uses his speed to get into space up forward but as a marking key forward, forget it. He's worse than a Tyrone Vickery in that regard. Unfortunately, Geelong is now going to pay dearly for not being able to develop young talent. Our midfield is so devoid of consistency and hardness (thanks to Duncan, Guthrie, Blicavs and Motlop) that we can't even afford to play Dangerfield as a semi-permanent forward where he would slot 60 goals per season.

Our midfield can cover for Danger

Menengola, Duncan, Selwood, Scott, Blicavs, Lang, Parfitt, Cockatoo, Thuoy

Taylor has 2 years left on his contract.

why would you play arguably the best midfielder in the league as a permanent forward? Just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

This is so absurdly negative....we finished 2nd in the H&A and I bet we finish top four again this season.

You talk about a midfield devoid of hardness but we were 2nd for contested possessions and 4th for clearances. Hardness wasn't really a problem, I get that it was off the back of Joel Selwood and Dangerfield but you fail to see where improvement might come from.

Scott Selwood: Missed all of pre-season and half the season. He should improve now that he's healthy coming into pre-season
Sam Menegola: Missed 10 weeks with a knee and after his first taste of AFL should improve.
Nakia Cockatoo: Missed 6 weeks with a knee and as a 3rd year player should naturally improve

I'm expecting these guys to be a part of the midfield mix and I think they add hardness. I don't see why Blicavs and Guthrie are mentioned in a negative light either. Both are decent inside players, Blicavs was 12th in the league for tackles. He's a little ungainly but gets his hands dirty. Scott Selwood has been a 5 clearances a game player and league leading tackler. We've got our issues but toughness wasn't really one of them last season and should only be better.

How do we rate the chances of House or Black lining up in the forward line in 2017?

Hope we draft Liam Ryan WA, as a goal sneak in the rookie draft. He looks exactly what we need, and I would def use a rookie pick on him.

I don't think they'll play.

I think it will be:
Motlop Stanley Cockatoo
Menzel Hawkins McCarthy

If we decide to play taller which is what Scott has tended to do then it will be utilizing H.Taylor/Henderson as a forward rather than Black or House. The KP headaches we have in established first team players I think will keep them out.

Our midfield can cover for Danger

Menengola, Duncan, Selwood, Scott, Blicavs, Lang, Parfitt, Cockatoo, Thuoy

No, it can't. You're being delusional. Joel is the only one in there who can play with the level of quality and consistency needed from a top midfielder, and he can't carry it by himself. We saw as much in 2015. Duncan lacks the consistency, Menegola is just average, Scott looks well past his best and highly injury-prone, Blicavs looks pretty much hopeless as a pure mid, Lang and Cockatoo have shown nothing that would indicate they can become permanent contributors to a successful midfield group, Parfitt is in his first year, and Tuohy is a defender.

Even with Danger and Selwood, the midfield doesn't bat deep enough. This was blatantly obvious in the two Sydney games, against a side which does boast a wealth of quality mids.

Really that's how you think we lost those games? It's not how I saw it.

Inside 50's were 72 vs 40 in our favour. The big problem the way I saw it was in our ability to move the ball quickly and deliver the ball inside 50 rather than bomb it long. We went too tall and Sydney crashed the packs with Aliir Aliir (prior to injury) and then used their smaller, quicker players to rebound the ball. We were beaten on the outside by a team that exploited our lack of mobility and skill at ground level.

You think Menengola is average he is the reason Caddy is at Richmond now dickhead

Taylor will do a great job up forward, Gardner could replace him or even Blicavs down back. I reckon Marc could do a great job down back. GHS should get a go in midfield

HF: Cockatoo Stanley McCarthy
F: Menzel Hawkins Taylor

On the Interchange: Motlop, GHS/Lang

Down back

FB: Ruggles Lonergan/Gardner Kolodjashnij
HB: Stewart Henderson Thuoy

optimistic regarding S

Stanley would need to produce a lot more consistency before he can hold down that role.

Not really.

I see it more as a five man forwardline with a utility ruckmen/KPF in Stanley. I thought he was solid all season and that we got a good contribution from him between ruck and playing forward. Most of my gripe with last season revolves around Scott persisting with his uber tall team and our lack of run out of the backline.

I thought Stanley getting out the back as a KPF was one of our more promising tactics and that if we had a bit more rebounding from defense it could be even better. But 17 goals from a ruck/forward is a good output that I'd be happy with him repeating.

If Menegola is the reason the club moved Caddy on, they've made a huge mistake.

You're writing him off based off one bad game in a prelim final. It was a learning experience for the "8 game veteran" and I'd expect over the course of the season he'll learn to deal with the close attention Sydney gave him which would have been a new experience for him. Not like Caddy showered himself in glory either with his six possession game.

I was thinking playing this forward line, a bit too optimistic?

HF: Narkle House Gregson
FF: Jones Ratugolea Black

Could very well be the Cats VFL forward line of the century.

For me it wasn't fast or slow that was the issue. When we moved it fast and had a numbers advantage and space we still messed it up, Motlop and Stanley both made costly mistakes when we could have made a fast break and I'm sure that they're were many others throughout the game but those two ones really hurt our chances at building momentum. The scoreboard pressure really got to our players and the Sydney defenders didn't hold any fear to grapple our forwards as they could afford to give away a few free kicks I50 if they were call on it as they had a large buffer on the scoreboard.

Problem is the forward line. Not the midfield.

Menengola took Caddys spot in midfield. He kicked more goals and won the ball more. The Age even said that Menengola or GHS could replace Caddy and do a good job
Caddy was playing injured last year and before menegola even got in the team. If he gets fit again we are going to look incredibly stupid for effectively dumping him for very little.
