I think we have plenty to worry about. Having a nice depth in middle rung players in our midfield doesn't make up for the lack of A graders after Sloane, and we've seen that several times this year. There's nothing sitting in the SANFL side right now that is going to change that next year either.

Greenwood could.

The pool is the pool is the pool

We wanted to take Himmelberg with our pick 16, but weren't allowed to. We had to take the next best player at 17

Both players make up the 2015 draft pool
Last year was worse with late picks added together snaring first rounders. But this year, and using 29 as an example, you'd be unlucky if it got pushed back any further than about 32. That would require 3 players at the top of our list to be acadamy players and their clubs having chimed in from behind us with their discount and deficit facility and removed those players from the pool.

Do the acadamy clubs need a pick in that round? If it's already been extinguished, can their later picks get bundled? There also seems to be no limit on their overdraft. All I've been able to find is that until it's been paid back they can't select in the next draft.

We didn't get the 16th bite of the cherry, we got the 17th go

GWS jumped the queue and took a bite in front of us.

There is no coherent way to argue we still took the 16th best player
That's true, but in general these events are not cumulative. Assuming no other queue jumping, once it gets to the pick directly after GWS, the next club has the full pool available to them. Obviously, at any one pick, there's likely to be 1 or 2 players removed due to queue jumping, but you'd be bloody unlucky to get to 29 and have 6 players removed, leaving you with an effective pick 35. Some picks in the 2nd round might even have the full pool of players available to them.

Intriguing that Scharenberg has dropped so far down the list on the back of no 'x-factor' or 'obvious weapons'. Pure footballer, you'd put bank on him playing 200+ quality games.

I certainly don't think the Lyons deal everyone seems to be counting on is actually happening (you don't decide on contracts with rival clubs while you're playing in a finals series) but I'd take that swap.
Our list manager would always be working these angles. He'd have his list of who he's actively shopping, who we'd be prepared to trade if offer was right and who would need board approval to let go. With JL, it would simply be an understanding that if they can agree to terms with him, then their 2nd round will get it done. There's no way that Reid is not engaging in these discussions just because we're still in the finals.

Again not watching & not understanding the game, player development ......there's plenty to get excited about and if you'd been watching properly, you'd be as excited

Amazing that Milera, Keath, Menzel doesn't excite you? .......you're not a Wigg fan ?

You do realise that one year doesn't equal the next year ? ......otherwise Thommo would never have aged and slowed down, and Lynch & Mcgovern never developed

I would almost guarantee you didn't think McGovern would give us anything this year and would still be playing SANFL and about to be delisted

The jungle drums are getting louder that Lyons is gone.
This could be one of biggest list turn over years.
Lyons, Jenchy, VB, Shaw, Lowden, Grigg, CEY, Hendo, Thomo.
Sounds good to me, free up salary cap space and get some midfielders! Surely that would free up 1.5 - 2 million which could nett 2 or possibly 3 guns. Then next year go after fyfe or dustin martin on the free agent market. Get it done afc. Feel there will be around 10 players off our list end of year and a needed cleanout. The salary cap space is needed for pay increases to lever, atkins, laird, m crouch, mcgovern etc. Also wigg will come into that team next year, he reminds me of a young Sloaney and has huge upside. Hampton, Doedee, Seedsman, ROB, Dear, Greenwood, Knight, Menzel and Milera have all got potential and will push their claims next year.

Is it a concern for Crows fans that Menzel hasn't signed a new contract yet. I am not here to frustrate or stir the pot. I am curious. I thought Menzel would have made your best 22 this year as I was impressed with his efforts at Carlton.

What are you on about? He signed for 3 or 4 years.

Cmon NTRabbit youre not watching or understanding.

We have A graders in the reserves we just choose not to develop them in the AFL.

Forget the sharenberg obsession - plenty better players than him in this draft , at least 40 and maybe more

Thanks for clarifying... the website I looked at still listed that he hadn't signed. Great news. Think he is going to be a big talent. His defensive side of the game isn't natural and once he figures this out will be a gun
If anything the defensive side of his game has been very good. He tackles and chases very well. He's just not consistently getting enough of the ball, having said that concussions haven't helped.

I expect next year he will be playing AFL very well.

I've gone over this but, if we ended up having pick 35 we end up having pick 35.
Slow down buddy can you explain that again?

I'd rent a Ferrari just to drop you at the Jag place so you can drive over there to ferry him to the airport. :p
Do you need a lift to the Ferrari place?

He's got his defensive side up and running. Look for him round 1 next year.

Go into the draft with picks 15, 30, 45, 52, 55 - Draft midfielders with first two picks, jarman with last and the others one whatever the best available is..

I think our side is pretty well balanced got great prospects back and forward coming through with the likes of Doedee, Dear, ROB, Beech, Wigg, Knight, Greenwood, Keath, Menzel and gore (After our best 22 - which this year proved is VERY good) so we have little to worry about right now..
You have putt some thought into this so I wont go over the top. I agree our bottom end talent is looking really good. My concern is if we do as you suggest we are only paddling. The time to strike is now. I think we need a high end midfielder to help us bring it all together now. Your solution , while a good one , is not the optimal one to take advantage now.

Bulldogs are the inverse of us, powerful, high talent midfield, but a really pedestrian forward line outside of Stringer, and an ok defence that is better against smalls than talls.

Which is where we're both short of GWS, because they have that high talent on every line, forward, middle, and back.
And the reality is you cant get those types of players unless you get multiple top 10 draft picks year after year.
Getting the odd beauty at pick 44 is the hard way to go about it.

If they were A grade talents who could impact the game in the same way that acquiring a Rockliff, Bontempelli, Parker, Kelly, Shiel, etc could do next year, then they would have already been impacting the AFL side this year. They haven't.

Menzel is a HFF with ongoing fitness concerns, Keath is a rookie CHB who just finished playing cricket, Milera is a HFF who couldn't impose himself on the game when given the opportunity, none of these have the remotest relevance to our lack of midfield talent. As for Wigg, maybe he's an AFL mid, maybe he isn't, but he never managed to dislodge any underperforming players from the AFL side this year, if he was that kind of talent he'd have played 15 games.

It's a bit silly to say that about McGovern, because if he hadn't have been good enough to earn and keep a place then it would be a fair assessment of him, but he was, so it's completely moot.

It's not about excited, it's about overvaluing rookies and fringe players because of the colour they wear.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like Rocky in the side, really rate him but the last two matches from the Bullies and the game from GWS shows the value of a really quick team. The amount of smothers that the Bullies got tonight turned that match, I get the idea we are missing a chance by backing Thommo in this finals series. We might beat Sydney, might beat Geelong but we are going to be over run by the other two teams
Quality inside mids with pace are rare as hens teeth and you need picks in the top 10 to get them. Sloane and B. Crouch have good pace, removing Thommo and Lyons for Rockliff and a Hampton/Milera with Sloane obviously spending a far greater amount of time inside than he currently does. This would speed our midfield up significantly compared to what it is currently.

To have a midfield that would compete personel wise with the size, speed and maintain the contested ability of the Bulldogs/Giants midfield would essentially require us to sell off all our A-Graders and rebuild with multiple top 10 draft picks.
