Soft spot for Brisbane
A poor midfield leaves you as vulnerable as a bad defense, not more, not less.

You can't have one part of the ground that is too poor or the disadvantage in that area outweighs the advantage in all others.
A midfielder has to be offensive as well as defensive. They make everything happen.

Look at the grand finalists. The two best midfields played each other. Both had meh key defenders. It's not that important - and frankly it's always easier to be negative and stop something happening than to be creative and attacking.

Our drafting policy isn't needs based in the first round. We always go best available.
Drafting a defender early is a free hit. No one can get that wrong.

The spectacular fails like Angwin, Sellar, Tambling, Watts (not anymore) are usually forwards/mids.

My gut feel from what ive heard. Lyons will net us a pick in the 20s. Imo we will couple that pick with a player like cey to get a high teens pick which we will move to carlton for gibbs. Carlton are in rebuild. They want draft picks. We want to hold onto pick 13.
Makes sense considering Carlton are looking to get a few GWS players

I can't see how we get a late first rounder unless we trade our 2017 first to GWS for pick 15 or 16 and even then, if GWS want that pick we should just pay that for Gibbs and Carlton can on trade it.

Sure, you want good players everywhere. But you can get by with Hamling, Roberts, Cordy in peripheral roles. Key midfield roles you can't skimp.

We've done it backwards. We've gone for a blue chip defence with a workmanlike midfield.
Imagine an alternate history where Brad Crouch hadn't had his career ruined so far by injury and Danger was still with us.. would you call that that workman like still?

We drafted Doedee after Dangerfield left and drafted Lever after Brad Crouch missed an entire season

Yeah I'm not saying I agree with the last two years of drafting, I just don't think there is a huge disparity between defenders and midfielders influence on the game.

That being said I also think that we've missed our window, circumstances haven't worked out for us so unless we can get 2 A grade guns we should be trading out a bunch of players and rebuilding.

Rubbish ! .........Dangerfield leaving wasn't planned .....i'll debate the following midfield was in fact Blue Chip in the AFL :
Dangerfield ...Sloane ...Brad Crouch ...Matt Crouch

Doedee

Seems like a lot of first rounders spent on defenders to me

I think it was an over correction by our list management.

Last year and the year before we had a strong midfield, a potentially potent forward line but a defense that was extremely suspect.

It's quite clear that at least up until last years draft our list management panel did not rate the players we had as defenders and felt the need to upgrade it.

We wouldn't have downhill skied over the bottom 10 if that was the case.
Vs those bottom 10 our midfield often lost when left on its own. with us only winning control of the game through the middle with the assistance of our forward and back lines pushing into the middle.
