Sure, you want good players everywhere. But you can get by with Hamling, Roberts, Cordy in peripheral roles. Key midfield roles you can't skimp.

We've done it backwards. We've gone for a blue chip defence with a workmanlike midfield.
You keep pushing this and I don't disagree with you in some respects. But you can't ignore that the AFL's top 2 midfield ie Sydney is made up of bits and pieces. It's not one size fits all.

With that said I was surprised we threw another first round pick on Doedee, although I have some hope he will develop further up the ground. If he doesn't then yes I agree we end up too top heavy with 1st rounders in defence.

What can't be denied however is that the root cause of our issues is leadership and an abject failing of senior players to lead from the front. The club is complicit in this failing with selection policy.

Seems like a lot of first rounders spent on defenders to me
Not sure of your point ......it doesn't change that midfield i outlined? ......so what relevance is their in posting a list of defenders ? .......BTW you may consider Doedee a pure defender, but others (me :D) don't in the longterm ......and Smith was in fact a drafted midfielder

So you can see from Smith and Doedee, and Dangerfield (recruited as a defender) .......that the position players are drafted playing, has no bearing where they play at AFL level

Shall i continue:
Rutten recruited from U18 as a CHF
Tex was actually playing as a midfielder when put on the NSW scheme

Drafting a defender early is a free hit. No one can get that wrong.

The spectacular fails like Angwin, Sellar, Tambling, Watts (not anymore) are usually forwards/mids.
Yeah and the best forwards go first, best mids go second...by our pick, usually 10-15 there is usually a preponderance of defenders

Whether you rate Gibbs or not, he's contracted for 3 years. Carlton are not going to release him without being made an offer they can't refuse.

Suggestions of a second round pick and average players are dumb and a waste of time.

It will take our first and a player.

Some might not think that's what he's worth but that's what it will take.
As most of us were unhappy at the return we got for Danger I will be even more pissed if we give up more than a first for Gibbs.
If you look at both players and their worth why are we even thinking of giving up more than a first fot Gibbs and if we do are we going to be happy with that?

2 trades = 2 x reamings. 1x giving 1x receiving.

Vs those bottom 10 our midfield often lost when left on its own. with us only winning control of the game through the middle with the assistance of our forward and back lines pushing into the middle.
Well done, you just described in brief a game of football.

Because our midfield sucks and we need to bolster it to try and win a flag.

The club may think differently and agree that's too high.

As for the Danger trade, there's also a big difference, Danger didn't have a 3 year deal. Had he we wouldn't have traded him unless we got Geelongs first and Selwood.

Maybe the hope is Lever and Smith go into the midfield rotations and Doedee and Hartlett take their spots ;)

Yes Lever thinks he can play midfield and I think he has the competitive edge to be part of a rotation. Even if he slips to the back line when not running through.

If you can get/develop some blue chip mids through pick 20 something or 30 something (Hanneberry/Parker), or low value trades (Kennedy) then great.

Have we? Yes Sloane but no others.

The Swans have done brilliantly (better than us) in turning cheapish mids into guns PLUS they've also spent big on Mitchell, Heaney, Mills.

We've done worse and then compounded it by spending less.

Anyway - it doesn't matter to the issue at hand. Our defence is sorted for a decade. Our forward line is excellent. Midfield has holes and that unfortunately for us counts more than forward line or defence.

Get two players at or near Gibbs level and we're giving it a serious shake. Even one and I'm optimistic about 2017, given that B Crouch should be better.

Doedee looks to have the physique for big bodied mid. I don't see it in Lever.

If we want Gibbs and Rockliff which I so hope we get both. We will be parting with both 2016 & 2017 1st round picks no way around it unless we offload a quality player which I'd rather part with the unknown in the picks. If we want to be a serious contender we require Gibbs and Rockliff. All those that disagree are happy to end at semi finals or are willing to let our forwards get old while we bring in 18yo midfielders hoping they are a graders. If it doesn't work we will simply trade out a player or 2 to get some 1st round picks. I will be disappointed if we dont get Gibbs and Rockliff. I'm actually losing sleep I'm that excited and im a shift worker which lack of sleep is killing me atm. Come on Crows get this done. 2017 1st and Mackay for Gibbs and pick 13 and CEY for Rockliff would be a dream come true.

He was injured for 5-6 games. He also made the AFL team of the week something like 11 times, so I don't think there were too many problems with his form.
That's true. I felt like there was something missing. Not his usual hardness. I thought maybe it was coming to grips with being more offensive and playing off his man more under Pyke/Pods. But maybe you're right and it was just a gap in continuity
