Is there a chance that Hawthorn will make a play for Henderson and Smith after those two, in my opinion, rather suspiciously retired. It could be nohing, but I wouldn't put it past the Hawks.

If Henderson and Smith confirm that Geelong is there club of choice the deal will be done without any hawthorn influence

Geelong "We are interested in Lachie Henderson & Zac Smith"

AFL "Excellent. There is a very good chance those two will be making it to the Cats"

Hawthorn "After recent retirements we would like to announce our interest too in Lachie Henderson & Zac Smith"

AFL "According to the 'Equalisation for Dummies' book it says here to f*ck off & miss the finals already..."

Hawthorn have Ceglar in the wings who Hale was lucky to get a finals berth ahead of.

Down back they had to let Lake go to avoid 4+ retirements next season, and they probably see Spangher (who struggled with injury season) as an instant replacement in a KPD role.

Regarding Lake - hasn't there been speculation for most of the season that this was going to be his last year (with the Hawks anyway) as they weren't prepared to offer him a new contract and he didn't seem to be in their plans beyond this year.

If the Hawks are interested in Henderson, they would have made a play for him (quietly as per how they do things) during the season and would most likely know already if he was coming or not. We will see what happens, but I'm feeling good about Henderson to Geelong (not sure why)

I just hope for his own sake he doesn't end up back in WA.
I was discussing Bennell with another AFL fan and he said Bennell did not want to really want to go to the Tigers so deliberately blew the morning medical meeting so he could be traded to a WA team.

Not sure if true or not. But if this is not the reason why he missed the medical and was seen out drinking - then surely we do not want him. Maybe too young to know what he is blowing and could re-offend.

SJ needed to be moved on because they want to move in a new direction. He is too slow for the midfield and his unpredictability is not what they need with the young players comming through. Menzel will essentially take SJ place in the forward line & Bartel may spend more time there with his marking ability. Don't worry about the number of places they have to fill, the last few spots is not what will win us a premiership in the next 2 or 3 years. Pretty sure anyway that they will still manage to end up with about 3 picks in the top 60 plus possibly a rookie upgrade & 4 or 5 trades in. They are likely to get late 2nd or 3rd round picks for Jansen & Kesten, & Walker involved in the Henderson deal.
Our forward line was not that good this season. At least SJ offered 30-40 goals a season for us - and we do not know that Menzel will truly remain fit for the season - so it is a big ask after 4 years for him to kick the 30-40 goals SJ offered us. But I take your points and yes there were some good reasons to let him go - but I am still torn between both arguments.

If he's deliberately blown off the Tigers and not given them the courtesy of a phone call to say he'd changed his mind, then he's a fool. No club or manager will want to work with someone who acts like that.

As luck (or not) would have it, I bumped into the resident Hawthorn supporter at work a minute ago. An otherwise top fellow, when talking about football he can have his moments like the best of 'em. So anyway, I asked him if he thought that getting rid of Lake and Hale had anything to do with going after Hendo and Smith, and his response was: "Nah, we don't want those spuds so we'll let you guys have them, along with the overrated Dangerfield".

The argument went like this - If the Tigers offered a better deal GC would deal with them not Freo. So he deliberately stuffed his chance at the Tigers so he got his chance to go home. As I said not sure this is accurate but it is not impossible.

The more i think about it all we have clearly been playing a long game here... last year brought in talls at the end of the year and young mids, this year fast tracked a heap of kids, weened out vets and are bringing in contested mids.

We have gotten our medical stuff going in the right direction, yes we had lots of injury but we also had a few straight unlucky ones, and managed to have 3 permanently hurt guys playing in the seniors at the end of the year...

And 3 kids we sat in the team all year (Greggy, Lang, Jacko) are 'cream' type... players who will be much better with grunt blokes getting them ball

Maybe i have my rose glasses on... it could obviously all go wrong.

But I think there is a shit ton of planning in this and if it all comes together could be brilliant

Could blow up as well mind you...

I can't understand a club that had told a player that they don't want him, having any say in which club he goes to the following year. It's like throwing something in the bin but, when someone walks past, sees it and tries to take it out, you race up to them and demand they buy it from you. You're better off shopping it around first and, if nobody wants it, then you throw it in the bin.

Back to Bennell, though- do you think it's a good idea that he comes back to WA? Has he got good family support or is he effectively on his own and therefore better off interstate away from bad influences?

So if they lost Spangher or Frawley to injury who goes back there? Clangers?

Lose Roughie or Gunston and it's Clangers?

Think they may need a KPP either best 22 or depth. That looks a bit thin.

My horrible son told me the other night that Hodge had retired as well. I'd ordered in all the party food and champagne but last night he was cracking up laughing at me and told me he'd been pulling my leg.
Grrr! Guess we get to see the Thug Twins go around for another year of sniping. *spew*

Reports are that Jed Lamb is looking at heading to Carlton for next season, hoping for more senior opportunities (hmm, where have we heard that before:rolleyes:). If the Blues do pick him up, would that create more competition for Menzel for his spot in the team, and hence maybe have Troy looking at his potential options for next season - maybe try to bundle together a deal that sees Walker off to the Blues, Henderson & Menzel to Geelong with draft picks involved also.

Bennell has chosen Freo. I look forward to not hearing his name mentioned here again.
So far they're the only ones to say "NO THANKS"
Makes you wonder with so many clubs knocking him back that they know a lot more about his off field activities than has been publicly revealed.
