I'd like the 6ft 6in mobile defender from Carlton as our back half are ageing. In preference to Dangerfield.
Henderson is only a 3rd tall though.
And he doesn't come for free.

How about we play Kolo and see if he looks up to it?
Replacing Lonergan will be the issue. I doubt Kolo or Henderson fit that mould.

We were saying last pm, Lonergan would have to be our most underrated player. Ever?? More so than Milburn, Kelly, Boris and whoever has had that title.
Lonergan is superb at what he does.

Now you have all of Stanley, Clark and Walker. Don't get your Walker/Clark scenario, but agree with the rest.

Clark replaces Walker when Clark is fit

In Clark
Out Walker

Or from last nights team

In Bartel Stanley Clark
Out Luxford Kersten Walker

Wow I just heard Ling talking about SJ, and that possible GWS deal.
It's the first time I've heard someone with credibility discuss it.

SJ was in an LA nightclub and got a call at 4am telling him GWS had offered picks 4 & 7. And were offering him a 3 year playing deal with an additional 2 year coaching contract.

Kudos to him for staying. But how the hell do you pass that up?
Guess he was then hair tested. :D

Whilst we all hold our breath when he gets the ball, and exhale slowly when we see him give it off effectively, there simply is no one else that can fulfill his role. Likewise, since his move back he's been rarely trounced.

There's a lot to be happy about that. Lonners has had a great career, barring his injury setback.

Makes you think the MC was/is still playing for the real thing this year then. Not the future.
Plus, some loyalty to a freak and club hero.

Well they obviously twitched. Or the call wouldn't have been made.

I don't like dumping heros. But you'd almost trade anyone for 4 and 7. Never mind a 30 year old.
Especially as we had 14 as well.

Makes sense.
So you also want to keep Lang, Gregson, Murdoch as ins should Bartel and GHS be available.
See the edit I made to my last post. Bartel would replace Kersten structurally a similar role to what he played last year.

I don't see us playing Horlin-Smith as a midfielder while we have Kelly and Blicavs in there. In the medium term I see Blicavs going back as a KPD and Kelly and co retiring. I see GHS developing in a similar time frame to Greenwood.

Not that SJ owes us much, but he will still give us a few beauties this year, just to remind them they were vindicated.

Interesting, I heard Johnson on radio today and he confirmed the LA location and the "after football discussion".

Johnson said nothing was formally tabled and he felt GWS were just testing the waters.

I think he said the years and the dollars mentioned in the media was overstated.

Suppose the truth might be somewhere in between the two stories.

Lonners is amazingly speedy for a big hunk of a man. I've seen him beat faster-looking players to the ball from a standing start and he just has that determination about him that he's not going to be bested.
Absolutely love the bloke!

I would expect Bartel to be heading back to the midfield when he is right to go back there- might be difficult without being fully fit but increasing his midfield minutes would eventually open that spot up again for Kersten- possibly.

3rd tall in the way he plays? at 196cm he should be able to hold down a key post I would have thought , but he has been a more talented forward than someone like Lonergan... can he be a strong defender if told that your role get used to it?

I feel conflicted with a deal like that. If I was in charge , and we could actual do a push deal.. I have no doubt that imo it would have been too good to pass up. Even from a player POV 3 plus 2 ..did he talk dollars cause my memory of it was 700 or so over 5 years...so literally 3.5M deal he knocked back.
For us those two picks ...it jus makes me wonder who we would have chosen. At different times we were linked to Pickett , DeGoey , Marchbank and Wright.

Remembering that we were looking at at Wright , makes me think.
Long, long term I wonder at what point we recruit for the long term replacement of Hawk. Historically guys like him do not play till they are 35 ..infact anything post 30 is a bonus. Id say ..considering his back is an on going management issue and that he basically 27....
so.. probably in the next year or 2 we will have to start looking.

No, they never mentioned dollars.
And I wasn't really thinking about the picks.

I was thinking it was amazing SJ knocked that back.
Maybe he thinks a coaching gig is in the bank anyway.
And thinks he can easily do 3 years.

It's all well and good to say the club should have accepted said offer and maybe they should have been willing to do so. But how exactly can you trade a player who does not wish to leave? Seems as though SJ said no and that scuppered any possible deal being struck.

I never said they should have accepted anything.

or
their deal might have been conditional and he wasnt sure he could do 3 years, and wants to coach in melb and not in the dump zone

or ...or.... I could come up with heap of variations. The way they are playing now , GWS upside apparent ... it would be interesting if a mid year deal was available to be done.

I suspect GWS will no longer be looking for 30 something's at years end. Only player in their prime , the type to help to take them all the way.

If we were an American sport , we would probably off load Harry to them for all we could get. Thank Heavens we have not reached that level yet.

Still If the rated Henderson as a KPD , i dare say they would have plenty to offer.

Of course they'll have cap issues.
And it will create the most even playing list ever assembled.

22 year old wants out. Fine. Pick 5 thanks and another 18 year old in.
They've been doing it since they started.

Yep , we keep trying to put the fire out by pouring petrol on it. Carlton should be talking to someone to get them in PSD
