Hawthorn
Early days:

Overall health of the list is sound (touch wood) which is great.

Going by the training reports all players are going well and not too many appear to be on restricted programs.

Will post some player assessments over the next few weeks. (Feel free to do the same Hawk BF posters:thumbsu:)

Billy HARTUNG (Smokey):
Billy has been training well and is now the 3km time trial king at Hawthorn, dethroning Isaac Smith. Running is not all that he is good at. He has been proving elusive and skillful during the pre-season with good ball use a highlight. Billy was a green vest regular in 2015 and was the unlucky omission from the 2015 Premiership side, playing 18 games for the season. Billy is an endurance beast priced at $316k (SC). Other SC punters will be looking at B.Crouch, O'Meara or S. Selwood as their possible mid priced selections so Billy may be a good point of difference (POD). Billy is not returning from major injuries (like the other mid-pricers mentioned) and could benefit the most at Hawthorn from the interchange cap and lack of a vest. Could be an astute pick.:thumbsu:

Keiren LOVELL (Rookie): IMO as far as new recruits/rookies go, Lovell is the most the most likely at Hawthorn. He is reportedly training like a seasoned veteran and has been spending a bit of time with a certain ball magnet (see pic below). By all reports Lovell's pre-season to date has certainly put him in the selection frame. Lovell is priced at $126k and is an undisputed ball winner. Watch NAB cup form.

Jarryd ROUGHEAD (Established Star): Currently my most conflicting choice. Key Forwards have killed a few of my SC seasons in the past and I am loathe to pick them. However, it is well known that Roughy has a few more strings to his bow than trying to kick bags; such as playing on the ball, tackling and rucking. For a big man this is SC Gold. The question is what role will Roughy play this year? He is training well and has reportedly slimmed down which may point towards more on ball time which will make him very attractive to SC punters. In the last 5 years he has averaged high 90's with a couple of 100+ seasons as well. Roughy 'tonned up' 11 times last year including a 173 against the Doggies in Round 3. On the flip side he also notched up 6 scores below 80 (including a couple of 40's). If you pick up the Rough this year and he turns in a season reminiscent of his 2014 Preliminary Final game against Port in 2014 you could win the cash (see link below). There are some interesting players around Roughy's price range which making him a tempting pick at $520k (SC).

EDIT: To miss first half of 2016.

Kurt Heatherley (Rookie):
Who will replace the great man Brian Lake. Kurt's name has been mentioned. Whilst Kurt is a different type of player I have a feeling he could become a bit fan favourite. Finished high up in Box Hills B&F and is quick and tall with good lateral movement. Kurt is an aggressive player who likes to tackle and take a mark. Has impressed the right people at Hawthorn and is expected to debut sooner rather than later. Will be competing for a defensive spot with Angus Litherland, Kaiden Brand and Matt Spangher. Could be a handy filler in the D8 position quietly accumulating cash. Watch NAB form/selection.

Is Howe in frame to take Sucklings spot in the team?

He is. He is worth keeping an eye on during the NAB. Apparently has put on some size and has Hawk punters up and about. The problem is at 265k (SC) is he going to be a cash cow /keeper? Probably not. If he was rookie priced he would be worth a very close look.

Considered Roughy earlier today thinking his extra midfield minutes might really help lift his scores. But after checking his late 2015 scores when he was doing just that there really isn't a lot to get excited by.

Hartung looks like he could be worth the risk and Lovell would be a good cash cow if he gets games. But will he get them ahead of others?

More considering Rough as a POD as it is a real lottery around his price range. Wingard is $527k. Then you start Looking at Zorko, Higgins Gunston around the same price. Buddy looks good value at 470k and is 50k cheaper than Rough.

Really tempted by Billy but his price is a bit up there. Not sure if he would become a keeper.

IMO Lovell would need to rely on injury/form issues to a Lewis, Hodge or Shiels etc to get a game. He may also get a run against the Bombers and Blues if he is playing well enough. A game here and there would probably rule him out as a genuine rookie cash cow.

I'd look at Gunston as a POD before Roughy. Has increased his average every year to date, has plenty of room to further increase it too given his goal conversion rate of 61% was his worst year yet (career average of 66%), and is now at the age where he should be coming into his prime years.

Litherland likely to make best 22 after Lake and Suckling's departures?

Watch the NAB. Heatherley, Brand, Spangher, Howe and Litherland seem to be the most likely. Litherland looks fit and ready atm and wants to play.

Roughy being out for an extended period will create some interest in the forward half of the ground too.

Thanks, mate. Reckon he has the ceiling to be a good contributor in the Hawks defence.

Going out on a limb and tipping Taylor Duryea as our highest scoring defender. Has come on in leaps and bounds and certain to get full games now. Tough, mobile, competitive, excellent disposal by foot. Also generally disposes the ball forward which, if accurate, is a huge Supercoach plus. Cheaper than Gibbo, who kicks the ball sideways and backwards a lot, so doesn't score as highly for his possessions.
Also going with Smith to become an elite midfielder; seems to be improving every year.

Currently have Duryea in my line up. No more sub vest means his average is bound to go up about 6-8 points. Also natural increases in ability due to factors like age/experience and confidence should see an increase in his average too. Also tipping him to be our go to guy for long, accurate kicks out of the back line now that Suckling is gone. My only question mark would be over the possibility of having to play a lock down role on a small forward. Shouldn't be a big issue as long as Stratton is in the side though.

I think that if Strats went down Gus would get the lockdown role playing tall or small. Durea will be to valuable in attack to waste him primarily on lockdown. In saying that, if someone gets off the chain he will be the first one called up, same as Shiels in the middle

Sicily in the frame lads?

Not strictly to cover the roughy hole but just in general is he a chance to push into the 22?

do you reckon bigboy will just play fwd to cover the rough loss or would there be a new kid on the block?

In the frame. NAB games should give a better indication.

With Spangher having calf problems (again!), it is probable that Brand & Heatherly are fighting for the 2nd key tall defender position. Both are said to be promising so if either are picked for round one they are worth having as a cash cow, as they are both at the minimum price. As they will be part of our future defensive backbone at least one of them should get plenty of game time this year.

As a point of difference I am initially going with Smith in the midfield hoping he will improve to be near elite by years end. At least I'd rather be cheering him on rather than Duckwood, JPK or Hanners every week!

If Howe or JOR look like getting a weekly game and are playing ok I will find room for them despite them being a bit pricey. Will wait until they get consecutive games.

Hi guys....Tim O'Brien worth a bench spot up forward? So hard to break into a Hawk side.

Cat questions welcome...
Wait for NAB. Will become clear who is the option that will get games early. Likely out of Sicily and TOB.

IMO no. Will be fighting for the position with Sicily, who may be ahead of him and not likely to score heavily anyway. There seem to be a lot of clear cut cash cows who will get plenty of game time that the problem is who to exclude. For example:

Christian Petracca M/F on min, Mitch Brown D/F on min & likely to play every game in Bomber's defence & be where the action is.
Sam Kerridge M/F 138,000, Jed Lamb 190,000 almost sure to get games with the Blues.
Daniel Wells below 250,000 could be elite again & trialled well
Jed Anderson, Jonathan Simpkin, mid 220's will make money.

As to your comment about breaking in to the team there are 4 positions available immediately due to retirement, injury & free agency and another 4 probable in the next 2 years. That's without injuries (as a Cat you know a bit about injuries). So the time has never been better for the up & comers. I still struggle to pick our best 22 as we have promising newcomers. Or is that just "hope springs eternal" because the season hasn't started.

Is ol mate Whitecross any chance of getting his spot back or is he done?

Seems like he would get first crack at Suckling's spot due to seniority but most of you Hawkers seem to think itll be the kids getting blooded.

He's got a lot of ground to make up but if he wasn't without a chance he'd have been delisted. I wouldn't have him in my SC side though. There are younger players with higher ceilings ready to come in and will likely get the nod ahead of him.

Hi guys, Just enquiring about Ceglar im a massive fan tbh I really liked this kid 2 years ago. with the departure of Hale is he a chance to take his spot play 22 games and push his ave beyound 71 in 2016?
