My step-daughter listens to the Kyle & Jackie O show in the morning on Kiis FM and that song gets flogged to death.

Yeah whenever I'm forced to listen that stuff it's pretty painful. Can't understand how deadshits listen to that all day when they pretty much rotate about 10 songs on repeat

I have to listen to KIIS a lot at work and it's infuriating. I can understand as a commercial station they play the same new songs over and over again, but they play the same not new songs over and over as well! I've heard Rihanna - Only Girl In The World and Adam Lambert - If I Had You both at least five or six times in the past week. And I'm pretty sure they're both from like 2010 or 2011. It makes no sense. ****ing mix it up!

DaRenegade, I'm not doing a count this year, first time since 2008 I've skipped it. I will make a final prediction though after voting closes based on my opinions and the counts of @Loofrundry. Are you going to put one together?

yeah I'm likely to do the same, just haven't had the time to do it like I have the last few years. gotta say, LOOFRunDry's count is interesting to say the least.

Jesus Christ, these lists just get worse and worse.

So much oversaturation of shit Aussie music.

The irony being Australia was producing original, internationally interesting stuff in the 90s yet international bands got the gongs and it was more even.

Interesting. Why so low?
Violent Soho have a terrible record of being over estimated by vote counts:

Year|Actual Position|Song|Position in Data Count|
2010|Not in top 200|Jesus Stole My Girlfriend|149|
2012|147|Neighbour Neighbour|169|
2012|170|Tinderbox|134|
2013|14|Covered in Chrome|3|
2013|137|In The Aisle|94|
2015|15|Like Soda|7|

The Album Poll result shows they are very popular at the moment, but the voting demographics are different there. Also topping the album poll shows that they have lots of songs that are popular splitting the Violent Soho vote in many directions. While a drop to #32 seems unlikely (my predictions were mathematical not opinion based), I think DaRenegade 's prediction of #22 is probably closer to the mark.

While I don't have a problem with Aussie music just because it's Aussie, I do hate how so much bland and uninspiring stuff (both local and foreign) gets in to the H100 these days. But the H100 has always been a popularity contest and not a song writing/performance contest, and this seems to be what floats the majority boat. The 2010's "music to feel nothing by".

Anyway Silent Alarm , as I respect your musical knowledge and opinions, I'd like your opinion on Gretta Ray. She is playing locally on Thursday arvo and I want something that might sway me one way or the other as to whether I go down and take a listen or stay put and catch the end of the H100. I might be able to do both if I sit in the back yard (It will be loud enough to hear from my place unless it's windy).

I'm no fedora and enjoy pop music as a rule, but why do people like Flume so goddamn much? I gave Skin a go the other day and wasn't impressed at all. What is the appeal? Those pop singles that everyone loves are unbelievably mediocre.

Didn't mind his hip hop songs but they weren't mind blowing. The only other track I liked was Wall F*ck and even that felt half baked and grew tiresome 2.5 minutes in.

I'll agree with thewitness about Violent Soho, I think Viceroy will be 20-30 and two of So Sentimental/Blanket/How to Taste will chart in the 50-100 bracket, but they are generally over represented in our counts as opposed to the H100 positions

I like LOOFRunDry's final estimate chart overall, sure there's plenty of trash in there, but there always is. funny he feels that Beyonce is going to chart, I thought if any of her songs stood a chance it was Freedom with Kendrick

All victims of having great albums without standout singles. It's no surprise to me.

I respectfully disagree. I thought the standout singles/tracks were obvious:

Frank Ocean: Pink + White, Nikes, Ivy, Solo
Radiohead: Daydreaming, Burn The Witch
A Tribe Called Quest: Dis Generation, We The People
Bon Iver: 33 "GOD", 22 (OVER S∞∞N)
Solange: Cranes In The Sky, Don't Touch My Hair
James Blake: I Need a Forest Fire, Radio Silence
Danny Brown: Really Doe, When It Rain

Like I previously mentioned, Kanye West, QOTSA, Vampire Weekend & Arcade Fire all polled 2-3 tracks in the 2013 Hottest 100. Kendrick even scored 2 entries last year. Why are the 2016 international stars not worthy of multiple entries? Because I honestly don't see it being a case of votes being split over 7-8 album tracks for each artist.

JJJ and festival promoters have serious power to shape what is popular IMO. The efforts of promoters to bring out quality international acts to festivals over the past year has been absolutely woeful to say the least. I've listed some of more prominent international acts at each of the main "JJJ-backed" festivals this year and many of them didn't even release music in 2016:

Groovin The Moo 2016: Danny Brown, Ratatat, MS MR, Twenty One Pilots
Splendour In The Grass 2016: The Strokes, The Cure, James Blake, At The Drive-In, Band Of Horses, Sigur Ros, Santigold, The 1975, Leon Bridges, The Kills, Peter, Bjorn & John, Tegan & Sara, Mark Lanegan
Listen Out 2016: Anderson .Paak, A$AP Ferg, Yung Lean
Falls 2016: Childish Gambino, London Grammar, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Grouplove, Booka Shade, Parquet Courts
Beyond The Valley 2016: Chance The Rapper, Hudson Mohawke, Ladyhawke, Phantogram, Zhu
Laneway 2017: Car Seat Headrest, Glass Animals, NAO, Tourist, Tycho, Whitney

It's probably no surprise Childish Gambino is a serious chance for a Top 10 spot with "Redbone" on the back of headlining Falls. "All Night" by Chance The Rapper probably wouldn't do as well if he didn't headline Beyond The Valley either. Based on this, I'm confident Radiohead, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Bon Iver, A Tribe Called Quest etc. would all feature prominently in the Hottest 100 if promoters didn't fail in luring them here.

Instead, its much easier and cheaper for them to rinse and repeat Hilltop Hoods, DMAs, Illy, Sticky Fingers, Thundamentals, Violent Soho etc. ad nauseum at every festival since they draw good crowds no matter what due to their endless plugs on JJJ. It's sad :(

I think people put too much stick in the Hottest 100. It's fun, but if my favourite songs don't chart, I can just give them a spin. Still a better listen than any of the commercial stations.

I've been a huge Hottest 100 fan over the years and honestly do enjoy the Australian touch that makes the poll unique. But the right balance of quality music and Australian music is critical to its success I feel.

JJJ in the past has prided the Hottest 100 on being "the worlds biggest music democracy" and its ability to attract voters from 170+ countries. Unfortunately I fear it will soon start to lose relevance if it evolves into a "Triple J Unearthed Hottest 100", where the majority of artists are completely unknown beyond our shores or even outside the radio station itself.
