Injury 2016 Injury List

Apparently Barlow's shoulder exploded into a million fragments according to the surgeons assessment, and surgeons are yet to do an assessment of the extent of the injury.

Does no-one edit Hacks copy at all? Its borderline incoherent. It also looks like the story is one third the length but repeated twice more with slightly different phrasing to meet the word count...

Haha, he is literally the same as a high school student.

With Barlow out now and no hope of finals why not just put Mora into the midfield and play him every game between now and the end of the year.
What have we got to lose?

I think the main question is what does Morra have to lose.

Ross has given Morra the hurry up... and fair enough too. That being said, Ross has also said that we want to set Morra up to succeed, not fail.

If Morra comes back when he's ready and kills it, then morra being retained on the list is a no brainer.

If however he comes back before he's mentally ready and fails to fire, it's going to be virtually impossible to retain him during the inevitable cull at the end of the year.

Right now the question mark over Morra's potential is the only thing keeping him on the list. Personally I'd like that question answered AFTER the list is culled at the end of the year, not before. That way Morra gets more time to get himself right, and he has one more year to prove himself. Force the issue however and it could well cut his playing career short before it ever really had a chance to get started.

And the fact that he never gets on the park.
The time has come, we are not a charity.

Surely Mora is already in the likely to be culled group and he really needs to show something in the AFL now? How many years has it been, you can't keep an injury riddled guy on a list forever..
It's a fair point you're making, and if it was any other player I'd agree with you. But Morra is still a special case.

The key question really is "Just HOW good could Morra be if his body stands up?"

As good as the Bont? As good as Fyfe or Dangerfield? As good as Judd or Kouta?

If Morra can get his body right (and yes - that's a BIG 'if'), then the sky's the limit. By all accounts his pre-season was drool-worthy, as was Fyfe's.
The pre-season fitness reigeme was flawed however, and many players suffered soft tissue injury as a result, including Morra.

It's been a shitty season and every one is calling for the axe to swing... but it's premature to swing that axe at morra. The club has previously declared that Morra is under no timeframe to get himself ready to play - it takes as long as it takes. Personally I think that promise should stand for Morra for one more year.

A rushed decision, or one based on anger or frustration is a great way to shoot yourself in the foot... look at Brexit for example.

Morra has done everything that everyone has asked of him, and more, in order to get himself right. There would be a whole team of specialists and sports psychs working with morra and the club on this one... I reckon they have told RTB that Morra can't be rushed and that he is worth waiting for.

I want him to play as much as anyone... but we shouldn't let circumstances force us into decisions that only appear logical in the immediate term, without considering the bigger picture.

The team's failure this year has nothing to do with Morra - he should not suffer the cosequences od other people's * -ups. Give the guy all the time he needs to get right, and instead cut those who most DESERVE to be cut.

To each their own I guess, and I agree that nobody gets a free ride forever. I just feel that if Freo had won enough games to make the eight this year, then Morra would probably not be in the cross hairs.

Remember also, that if any potential discard was worth a rookie spot gamble by another desperate club, it's Morra. Given what he showed during the pre-season, he's still too good to cut IMO.

Must admit you're starting to convince me, and though I've been in leaning into 'its now (as in this season) or never' for a while, I am wavering a bit.

To counter your argument, and I know this is not entirely the most accurate way to put it, while Mora has been sitting on our list basically recovering from one injury or another, we could have tried a maximum of 6 players in the AFL system. If we want to be more realistic, we could say maybe 3-4 low end draft picks could have come through our system. Sure, maybe it would have come to nothing in the long term, or we could have uncovered a gem like a new Barlow, Sandi or MJ. A list spot is a valuable thing. Mora needs to show something, even at WAFL level at least, or I can completely understand why we would call it a day on him.

The one thing that might save him this year is that there is clearly going to be a bit of clearing out of players that have been on the edge for while now that are further out the door than Mora. DeBoer, Mzungu along with Hannath, possibly Deluca. A fair chance Clarke, possibly Barlow :( are going to join Pav in going out the door in one way or another. So maybe there will be room to hold him one more year, but it will be touch and go as far as I see it.

I admit Morra is on thin ice... but even so, we should not cut that ice out from under him, just because we suspect it might break at any moment.

If it breaks, it breaks... but let's not break it for him.

His body is an issue but so is his form, he's hardly set the WAFL on fire this year. I know it's a bit harsh but he needs to put in some BOG performances like Clay Smith and Menzel did after their respective injuries. Hopefully he can put some quality games together like he did in 2014 and maybe play the last couple of games for Freo. Even if he does get injured or struggle to make an impact at Peel we should keep him. Pav, Sandi, Mundy, Ballas, Barlow, Griff, De Boer, Ibbo, Dawson, Mzungu, Mundy, MJ, Yarran, Mayne, Silvagni and DP are all likely to be not playing with us in 2018, so we can afford to keep rolling the dice, he's only 24.

A best on grou d would certainly help... but since coming back to Peel, the poor bugger hasn't played on 'ground' at all ... just mud.

Does the WAFL even award a 'Best on Quagmire'?

The conditions haven't been ideal for an outside type I know and match fitness would be a worthy excuse too. Hopefully he's in the best players this week.

Lyon made it clear Mora had to demand selection via WAFL form. Not sure one game with the ducks in 5 weeks would allow even someone of Mora's prodigious talent to be building the selection momentum the club demands.
Ross regularly refers to the gulf between WAFL and AFL and not setting players up to fail. The club will stick to the program that they 'don't gift games' and insist that Mora builds compelling form for Peel.
I'm fairly sure Ross was quite explicit about the fact that he needs to do this quickly...'needs to get a move on' or something like that from memory.
Mora would know exactly where he stands and what's required.

I must admit I'm conflicted when it comes to Morabito.

Sublime debut season, wretched bad luck since.

Like everyone else I would love to see Mora fulfilling his early potential and having a stellar career in purple. But does he have the capacity to make that dream come true? Even if he has a perfectly clear run with injuries from now on, have those past injuries taken their toll?

Mora has played three of a possible 135 games since that 2010 SF. His 2014 form (leading up to his recall) was far superior to anything he's shown this season.

2014 Season

1 WAFL First league game since devastating injury run. 23 disp.
3 WAFL Solid outing with 19 touches, seven marks.
4 WAFL Worked hard with another 23 possessions, two goals.
5 WAFL Played in midfield but not much impact with 19 disposals.
6 WAFL Strong game in midfield with 27 possessions. But on report.
7 Ill.
8 WAFL Terrific through the middle with 21 touches, two goals.
9 WAFL Quiet day with 11 possessions and reported again.
10 WAFL Bye.
11 WAFL Best game of the season with 28 possessions, three goals.
12 WAFL 18 possessions and five tackles as he closes in on AFL return.
13 WAFL Best on ground display with 28 touches, two goals.
14 WAFL Strong performance again in midfield with 24 possessions.
16 Melb Sub. Returned after nearly four years out. Had a few nice touches. 2
17 GWS Sub. Biggest cheer of match was reserved for him when he came on. Did well. 3
18 StK On Newnes and hardly sighted apart from goal. 2
19 WAFL Responded well to being dropped with 31 possessions.
20 WAFL Strong showing again in the midfield with 23 touches, two goals.
21 WAFL Solid in key defensive role and had 26 possessions.
22 WAFL Worked hard for another 25 possessions and a goal.
23 WAFL Solid start but sat out second half with leg injury.

2016 Season

1 Hamstring.
2 Hamstring.
4 WAFL Made tremendous return with 23 possessions.
5 WAFL Bye.
6 WAFL Second game back and much quieter with just the 11 possessions.
7 WAFL Third game strung together and had 15 possessions.
8 WAFL Played well down back with 19 touches but hurt hamstring late.
9 Hamstring.
10 Hamstring.
11 WAFL Returned from hamstring for 21 possessions.
12 WAFL Solid off half-back with 15 possessions, five marks.
13 WAFL Bye.
14 Ankle.
15 Ankle.
16 WAFL Returned from another injury for 12 possessions in tough conditions.
17 WAFL 15 possessions in awful conditions.

Can't really be recalled on current form.

Ultimately the players are expendable quantities. List managers have to act like farmers wives sometimes...pat them in the morning, serve them with mint jelly in the evening.

A difficult decision will need to be made at season's end.

It's hard to compare though because he was a midfielder in 2014 and this season he is playing as a defender - in that third key defender type role off CHB. So he's not going to rack up as many possessions as he would as a mid. I'd rather see him with some midfield time in WAFL so he gets his hands on the ball a bit more and they can better assess where he is at physically and skills wise.

I think there'll be a different approach this time. In 2014 the club was over cautious and were taking a long term view to his recovery but this time there's more urgency about seeing if he can make it. Time's running out. From the start of pre season there's been a bit of let's throw caution to the wind about his conditioning with it being much more "normal" than in the past. It's his last chance for his body to prove it can stand up to AFL and he knows it. If he does his knee again, he'll almost certainly retire. If he does another hammy he'll most likely retire at seasons end before having to be delisted.

Disappointing for a stalwart like Barlow to miss Pav's 350th.

Disappointing too for Johnno, Nat, Sandi, maybe Ballas. The list is bloody endless...

The thing is that Mora, unlike many others on our list, has already proven he's AFL standard. He now only needs to prove that his injuries are behind him.

When, back in 2010? That's a long, long time ago in footy terms. He's starting from scratch.
