Can someone please shed some light on this.

Half way through the season the AFL changed the academy bidding and drafting rules to state you could only take the number of picks to the draft as you had spots. Or something to that effect.

But the Giants have 8 picks in the first 4 rounds. Does this mean they have to take 8 players?

Can the smart people explain.

Sounds like:

Marchbank > Walker
Pickett > Smith
Smedts > Dick
Palmer > Tutt
5 > Tuohy
25 > Jamo
48 > One of Lamb/Graham/ Buckley/DVR/White?
63 > Whiley
66 > Foster
70 > Gowers (r)

DFA: X.Richards > Dre (if he is available to us).

New Rookie ruck > Wood(r)
Byrne to main list, (DVR to rookie? or get a new rookie), Sheehan becomes international rookie. (Wash trade use pick #80)
Keep JGM.
Re-rookie Gowers? Unless a better option available at pick #70?
Gallucci (r) may be unlucky but replace with Kerbatieh who seems to have a few more tricks (Pickett and Sumner seem more likely to play AFL than either?)

2017: Jones, KJ, Cas, Lamb, Graham, Simmo (retire), Thomas, Buckley, DVR, White, Rowe, Army (ret),

To be able to use all the points of those 8 picks, they must have 8 list spots. Previously, they would have been able to trade to get lots of late picks to get the points they needed to match bids.
But they could, for example, use the points to take 6 players, then pick up 2 DFA after the draft

The rub of it is that, if they have 6 list spots available going into the draft, they can only take a maximum of 6 picks into the draft. Their last two would be unused and all picks past them would move forward.

They needed to cut their list size back by 2 this year, I believe, to bring it in line with standard AFL list sizes.

They traded out Marchbank, Pickett, Palmer, Ahern, Hoskin-Elliott, Steele, McCarthy, McKenna and Stewart.
Patfull retured.
They brought in Deledio.

GWS currently have the following picks: 2, 15, 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60.

Presumably, they'll lose everything after 52, if I'm right about them needed to reduce their list size by two.
Alternatively, they could delist a few more players between now and the draft, allowing them to use some of those later picks.

Yep. I was blown away by their shithouse list management this year. Due to the recent changes they need a free list vacancy for every pick they take to the draft.

Instead, they stockpiled third rounders again with 5 picks in the 50's. Madness. They cant use any past 52 or so.

Why they didnt ontrade three of those picks for (say) a future second is beyond me. They really ****** themselves this year.

Then I found out they now have Richmond peeps managing the list and it all made sense.

Its like they forgot the rules changed this year. Nuts.

As Jimmae indicated, they may choose to delist a few more of their depth players if they feel they won't come on.

I'm really hoping they don't, because we could stand to have our picks 63, 66 and 70 shift up 5 places each.

Would paint the trade with Hawthorn in a very different light.

Pick ~40 in 2017 = 429 points
Picks 48, 61 and 65 = 527 points

But still. Assuming McGrath gets picked up at 2.

If Setterfield attracts a bid at around 5 (2034 points less 20 percent = 1600 points) this chews up picks 15 and 37 (1600 points) right there.

Picks 39 + 45 = enough points to match a bid at around 17 for a second academy player, and three picks in the 50's (52, 55, 57) let them match a bid in the 20's for a third.

That's McGrath and 3 academy players (bid on at 5, 17, and 25) added to their list. This means they'll need 8 list vacancies going into the draft, for a total of 4 players.

Thats the worst they can go IMO, leaving them space to take 2 rookies and a DFA or two and the list is maxed out again.

They're left with picks 58, 59, 60, 62 left over. For each one of those they take to the draft they'll need another list vacancy. Surely it would have been wiser to trade those picks (58, 59 and 60 in order would have held considerable value) to another club for a future second and a pick upgrade this year.

They got it wrong IMO, and will waste some good picks this year.

Given the changes to the system, why would another club take picks in the 50s for their future 2nd?

I'm just going to come out and say it; I want Graham to stay for one more season.
Given our lack of midfielders I think you'll get what you've asked for.

I can't see us getting rid of a 22 year old midfielder, even if he hasn't come on as hoped to this point in time.

7 picks - 5, 25, 48, 63, 66, 70, 81

Assuming we keep the 38/6/1 split from last year we'll need to delist 6 more from the senior list which I can't see happening.

39/5/1 = delist 5 more
40/4/1 = delist 4 more

Current OOC players are - Buckley, DVR, Tutt, Whiley, Graham and Everitt.

Tutt and Whiley you'd expect are both certainties to drop off the list. DVR and at least one of Everitt/Graham are in a bit of trouble I'd say.

I'd be very surprised should Buckley not be retained.
Of those OOC players, Buckley would appear to have the most upside and the one worth keeping around for at least another year or two IMO.

Who are possible DFAs??

Xavier Richards, although i reckon Essendon will take him because of the Ted/jobe connection.
Jack Grimes? Was talked about a few weeks ago as an option to replace ZT
Mitch Clark & Chris Dawes.. Both would be an upgrade on Levi but just dont think we would take the risk and would rather back in our youth.

Then why even grab picks 66 & 70? We intend to use at least one of them, probably both. That's 6 picks there, and a DFA makes 7 list spots.
We didn't use them last year, our last was Jack with 53. Two left over.
I think it's more about the deal with Hawthorn. Maybe keep JOM away from the bombers?

We traded GWSs second. Clubs wont trade a future 20s pick for picks in the 50s, especially without knowing the depth. Clubs that will have a pick in the 30s will be after quality not quantity.

It's not as straightforward as you're implying.
'A' future 2nd I should have said.

From the looks of it GWS need 11 list vacancies minimum to take most of those picks to the draft (with each player on 2 year contracts) and with the list to shrink next year.

They're going to struggle to pay for any top rated academy blokes next year as well.

If I was them I would have focussed on picks under 40 this year and next. Once I had enough points to pay for McGrath and 3 academy boys this year, I would have stockpiled future picks < 40.
