Unless we specifically asked to be left out of the majority of this arrangement I can't understand how the distribution can be so skewed.

Might be based on each clubs financial footprint and ability to manage it accordingly.

Why don't we get a zone in the N.T?????

It isn't a big enough market at present, I've just watched six games up there over the past week and there was only a couple of players who you would consider a remote chance of being AFL standard.

Having said that, I still don't understand why only certain clubs have been given some rights up there. The drug cheats get the Tiwi Bombers team for themselves !!

I watched three games of Premier League, one game of Div 1, two games of Div 2, one of U/18's and one of womens (that one was hard to stomach).

I saw Waratahs in all grades plus Jabiru, Southern Districts, Wanderers, Palmerston & Tiwi Bombers.

Districts and St. Marys would still be the top sides wouldn't they.......course haven't been up there in 15 years.

Sth Districts was in Div 2, my son's team rolled them on Australia Day.

There was a heap of indigenous lads playing the game across the grades, many of them were those small fleet-footed types (eg. Brad Hill) who flit in and out of games and don't seem to have a defensive side to their game plus anyone who was of decent size (ie. a gorilla) was way too slow.

However, there was a bigger nuggety indigenous bloke playing for the Tiwi Bombers on the half-back flank who did impress me. Not sure of his name or age but he was ferocious at every contest and never ever gave in. Best of all, his second & third efforts were inspiring and he was surprisingly quick for a guy with such a solid frame.

After giving some thought to the various 'zones' allocated for the each club's academy, I've come to the conclusion that we may do very well out of being given a smaller catchment area if the bidding rules remain the same for academy players. As we saw in the most recent trade period & the ND, clubs need to stockpile draft picks to enable them to draft the best kids from their academy. This partially contributed to us having 4 picks in the Top 20 of the draft.

Of course we also saw some academy kids end up at clubs other than the club the academy was attached to.

There may be a silver lining to this latest AFL plan.

Ops - just posted this in media before I found it here.

Love the maps Aph!

We are still being shafted by the AFL!!! Maybe we should ask for Broome and Northern WA

Can't help but feel there is something more to this or something we are missing. I can't imagine the league would do something that seems so clearly inequitable. I suspect it's something along the lines of only have access to talent that isn't already in the TAC or U18s setup...

Otherwise, I expect we'll be hearing from the club soon.

EDIT: Seems a pretty narrow scheme:

"If a club develops a young Australian from an Asian or African background and wants to draft them, then they will receive a discount on a basis similar to the current bidding system. Clubs will be able to apply for draft discounts on other youngsters from non-English speaking backgrounds if they develop the player in a similar manner.
For indigenous players from under-represented areas such as the Pilbara, incentives will also exist for clubs to develop and nurture talent in those areas."

So having a zone in NT isn't a big advantage because it seemingly only applies to areas where there isn't already a decent talent ID system. It's really about getting people from NESB involved. I reckon whoever has the inner and outer west, and then dandenong, gets the best deal because thats where the majority of the African communities are.

Even if current u18's are excluded this has huge future implications as the younger ones come through in future years
