I've seen 17 year old kids called duds on these forums before they've even got drafted. Where's the imaginary point where people are allowed to point out that a player isn't performing to expectations?

Is he a dud by normal AFL standards? Probably not.

Is he a dud by pick 1, paid a million dollars a year, trading your captain/best player and pick 3 for him standards? Certainly.

Tom Boyd is a perfect example of the AFL recruiting obsessions blinding recruiters from reality. Not long ago there was an obsession with athletes over footballers. Currently the obsession is with turning 200 cm kids who probably should be playing ruck into key forward monsters. They do monster kids in the under 18s because they're so big and tall but get shown up again and again at AFL level. They're have been plenty of others in the same situation. We've got one in Harry McKay that we picked up with a top 10 pick. Some will make it but not all, and rarely to the standard you'd expect from a top selection. The best KPFs are generally around 192 to 195 cm tall. They have the speed and mobility to keep up with the modern game at that size.

So yes I'm calling Boyd a dud because he was unlikely to ever be that good.
On the McKay front, Ben kicked three and took some really strong grabs in the vfl yesterday. Was surprised how big his frame was for an 18 year old.

Hopefully Harry can show something similar in the back half of the season.

What's the point in recruiting fowards if we haven't got young mids with proven foot skills.

Tom Boyd for example, if he struggles to get a kick with a team with dynamo mids like The Package, Bont and Macrae, he'd be an absolute fish out of water with us.

Can't afford to go too top heavy in two consecutive drafts, we are clearly exposed with Murphy out. Time to regenerate our midfield surely ??

More generally, smaller versatile players with good skills and decision making. No reason you can't find these guys in the 20-50 range and develop them appropriately. Doggies have stacks of them

Based on our list of players who are out on contact at years end, this is who I think we'll clear out.

Smith - Delist
Foster - Delist
Tutt - Delist
Dick - Delist
DVR - Delist
Whiley - Delist
Buckley - Delist
Wood - Delist
Graham looks like a gorner as well, suspect Clem Smith will survive, even on the rookie list.

IMO Graham might get a 1 year deal. He's a good player, I just think he has struggled under the new game plan.
Smith is goneski.
If he couldn't make it now, in his fourth year under a new and player responsive coach, he is never going to make it. I think (unfortunately) the VFL is the level where he is at.

He showed last year that he could play well at AFL level. I just feel he is taking longer to adjust under Bolton. Smith has shown nothing at AFL level.

Probably, as one of the reasons we'd have so many players out of contract is because Bolton wants to see what each player has to offer first.
Time to pull the trigger on Tutt and Whiley. I'd like to see DVR keep his spot on the list though.
Agreed.

Tutt has been in our VFL bests for 6 weeks in a row and provides speed and tackling pressure.

Pull the trigger and play him in the seniors. :p

Dont disagree with any of that.

As for the Dennis discussion earlier, I would think he has 2 more good years of VFL/ afl depth left in him. He certainly brings a lot more than those names above.

I would ask him if he would take a rookie position with a guaranteed job afterwards though. That would be the list manager doing due diligence.

Either way, I want him around for 2017/18

I'd be disappointed if we cut him and he kicked on elsewhere.

Do you think that is likely? I've yo-yo'd on him so much, and I'm currently in a phase where I am very down on him. The match committee seems to feel the same way.

What do you think will happen to Gowers and Sheenan?

Do you think we'll pay out Jones?

Not sure we'll cut as many players this year as we did, and as I've said I wouldn't mind giving him another year to see what he can do.

Not sure about the rookies.
I'd say Jones will see out his contract. Plenty of uncontracted players ahead of him that could be delisted.

You know that... I know that... but some people think that because he supported Carlton as a kid, we should pull the trigger.

If the truth be known, I am happy that the dogs jumped in and took him. Pickering is a complete mercenary who is just out to fill his wallet. We could have gotten Boyd at the end of last year, as people have speculated, but it would have cost us.

I agree with all those... except for Buckley. I still think that he has a position in the team, but it is currently occupied by Simpson.
