It came down to a pick between him and Cripps when we came to make our selection, it's on the internet somewhere. I'm sure our thinking wouldn't have completely changed had we have had two picks in succession. There simply would have been no need to make the decision, we would have drafted both.
Hindsite is a wonderful thing.

So we waste a band 1 compo on McCarthy and 2 years later, Freo comes calling, he stacks on a turn and takes a leave of absence because he is homesick and wants to go and play for Freo.

To the Qn about Weits playing forward, maybe we should ask the regular training attendees have they seen him playing forward at all?
That'd answer the Qn I would have thought.

Personally I love the idea.
He has plenty of time to play down back, surely it doesn't hurt to trial him just a little bit up forward.

What if he absolutely dominates?
It has always been said you take a great forward over a great defender.
Quite simply it is harder to dominate as a forward.
Can't say I remember anyone saying in the training reports that he was training as a forward at any point. I think that's something that would stand out to the track watchers, and stand out to myself if I'd read it.
I do recall somebody saying the other day that he has the ability to play forward. Can't remember who or where though.

I think he'd be more than good, ala Nick Riewoldt, but completely agree that you play your best players in their best positions until circumstances dictate otherwise.

With Gorringe, Curnow and McKay brought in to play tall forward roles, and Casboult, Everitt, Foster and even Jones already existing, there's simply no need.

He was sometimes pushed forward as a junior to provide a target, or to turn a game. He played the role pretty well often taking a lot of marks and a couple of goals. Still imo his best served as a defender.

Although jeremy cameron was a CHB prior to being drafted and look at him now

Cameron is a freak athlete though, whereas raw speed and power is probably not Weitering's strong suit.

He's not going to be that dynamic forward that breaks lines, just a type who grinds his opponent down. So he's better suited to either defending, where his read of the play comes to the fore, or CHF, where he can create space for others and provide assists in preference to shots on goal.

Let's all collectively hope that in a few years Weits is the ONLY good KPP on the list, like back in the day when Kouta had to play both ends.

Kinda gives new meaning to 1981's thread 'Are you REALLY a Carlton fan?'

;)

You know this how?

And even if we did manage to get a band 1 pick, how do you know we would have taken McCarthy?

I was merely stating that Mccarthy was the pick after Cripps in the draft. By all reports the Blues were watching both closely and chose Cripps obviously. Eddie went to Adelaide on a good pay deal and i think it would of got us band 1. With our first pick in the middle of the first round this wouldn't of been a too big of a shock.

At the time it was likely we'd get end of first round. I don't think anyone mentioned a band 1 compo.

Yeah, so many 'ífs'. Let's talk around to the idea that a good thing is actually a bad thing just because it might not come off. Just love the self-sabotage logic there, Dramoth, keep it up (it's also ironic that you are actually using hindsight in the idea that McCarthy would automatically want to leave us ).

At any rate, I wasn't commenting whether it was a good or bad thing, or even if we would have got band 1 compensation, just stating that McCarthy probably would have been who we'd have chosen.
