Injuries or not Thomas has been an absolute campaigner of a pick up.

Could have kept Betts for the extra cash... At least we would have someone in the forward line.

I have nothing against Thomas he tries his heart out...but it was a terrible decision by the club (Malthouse).

It really hurts to think that Thomas and Jones alone are taking up $1 million out of the salary cap...just crazy.
Imagine the player/s we could get instead...will have to wait till the end of 2017.

Presuming Thomas is on 6 to 700 surely we didn't feed Jones 3 to 400 to come across that can't be possible ? if so complete incompetent list management ??

Don't quote me, but I think the figures are more lik $625k and $250k. I'm sure there's some performance-related clauses in there for Daisy.

Thought Jones was more around $300k.
Even if you're right, that's still around $900k...we could get 2 very solid players or a gun for that kind of money :(

It's there in the bank for the future, as well as the remaining salary cap we haven't used.

We will have some quality players on the list within a few years, don't worry about that!

Mitch Clark wanted Fremantle until Melbourne offered him almost twice as much as Fremantle could offer him.
Kurt Tippett wanted Gold Coast until Sydney offered him significantly more than what Gold Coast were willing to offer him.

Both decisions were made for monetary reasons. There is potential that the same thing could happen again with McCarthy. Personally, I hope that we're not the club that's willing to do an overpay on an unprofessional athlete.

Good point, i think a club would be stupid to do this seeing as though he will probably get homesick again and sit out a pre season or a whole season.

Loving that a few posters are continuing to look at our long term list profile Harks. Find myself constantly doing this too.
Tomlinson would be great to get on our list from the perspective that he can play key position at both ends. He is also athletic enough to play on a wing or pinch hit in the ruck.

The point you raise is valid though. Does not shape as a superstar, given that he is a workaholic type, it is hard to imagine he has much more development as a player.

The questions are:
Regarding cost - can we get him on our list without compromising our high draft picks?
Need - this season will/should tell us regarding
  • Plowman, can he get/stay on the park, and is he as good as we think/hope?
  • Glass-McCasker - can he show enough development to have us confident of his long term value?
  • Jaksch - does his "kick up the bum" fast track his development, and where does he play?
  • McKay - how quickly can he develop and command a best 22 spot?
  • Charlie Curnow - ditto McKay, and where is he best played?
  • Silvagni - ditto, will he grow a couple of cms to be a KPP
  • Foster - many have written him off, but still young. Development?
  • Casboult - can he be an effective front line KPF or is he a ruck/forward?
Walker and Everitt - role, form and fitness (particularly AW1), we need some experience to protect the boys.

If we can fast track a couple of boys, and Jammo and/or Rowe can be effective for two more years, we may not need a mature "bridging" KPP/swingman.

Interestingly the recent SEN interview had SOS suggesting we would use the draft and players in the 22-23 yo age bracket if they became available for trade. Surely free agency should not be ignored, it does not cost picks.

I think Tomlinsons value will never be as high as it was last season. We were willing supposedly to offer a pick around 15 for him. Unless he has a breakout year then i dont see him being worth a pick in the top 25. If we can bring players like that in for our third pick or a pick around 30 then i'm all for it.

You seriously got to feel for Thomas at the moment. Was adored by the Collingwood faithful but had issues with injury and Buckley and came to Carlton to re-unite with a coach he loved. Then he see's that Coach gets sacked and may even blame himself for not being able to perform in order to maybe help the coach not get sacked.

So now heading into his 3rd season at Carlton...
  • No Collingwood supporter loves him anymore
  • Hasn't endeared himself to Carlton masses yet
  • Has battled an ankle injury then had to put up with a season ending shoulder
  • Lost his beloved Coach again
  • Probably pushing himself too hard to prove to everyone he still has it, giving him the yips during the game.
Imagine he left to a more successful club where the expectations on him were a little lower, perhaps it might have panned out differently... he may not have got in too hard round 1 and did his shoulder, not playing for the 18th side and being one of the highest paid players has put more pressure on him to perform...

I fear until we can mentally clear him of some of his demons he will continue to falter... wonder if subconsciously he intended to get reported in order to not have to play round 1.

Hope the coaches and team can get around him and see what can be done to get him close to his best again.

His $600-700k annual salary will cheer him up. :p

I reckon Dale Thomas's position at the club is untenable.Hopefully he can find some form during the season so that we can trade him for a pick 16 to20.
Should land us a quality player and give Dale another shot somewhere else, a fresh environment may just be what he needs.

Do the deal now!!! Pick 16-20 for daisy, heck we'll even throw in jones as a sign of goodwill..

Surely we're into a few of those GWS KPP.

Tomlinson, Stewart, Marchbank, etc.

I was really keen on Marchbank in his draft year, but he mainly plays as a defender. We really need to go after a forward. Watch this space to see if we go after Tomlinson again.

And at 25 time has all but tun out for C1.. we need to cut our loses at seasons end unless he somehow build great game awareness, his body holds up and he learns to bounce the ball properly lol

Even if we don't dump Dick, Foster & Rowe at the end of the season, we're in greater need of defenders than forwards.

Going into next season with just Plowman, Weitering, Jamison, White, Jaksch and JGM would be threadbare unless JGM kicks on quickly and we elevate him.

I would suggest most of Thomas' issues at the moment are in his head. He isn't playing with confidence, which is understandable.

Looks like he's trying too hard and overdoing it. He did have 6 tackles, so the effort is there. Just needs to build up his confidence. Maybe not in our rd1 22, but by mid season I think he will be.

I'd love to see daisy switch with Simpson on the hbf.
A good place to regain confidence, he has a very good defensive game the only thing he lacks is an offensive weapon, but tuohy and docherty have him covered there.
