Devil's advocate ....

Hopefully we won't be reigning wooden spooners at the end of the year.

Didn't Chris Judd leave Wesr Coast a year after they won a flag and come to the 2nd last Carlton?

The article says we are banking on homesickness. Sure it says he has friends in Sydney but his family is in Melbourne. Judd had friends in Perth and his girlfriend's family were in Perth.

Plus we may not be looked at purely on ladder position but on rebuild progress and coaching philosophies.
Yes there's numerous factors, not just ladder position.

Need to sell the dream

id be happy with mitchell but cant see it happening. i would really like to see us target a real leader. who, i have no idea but if we could get a hodge, boak, murphy type whilst we are in the reset it would make a big difference. i like murphy but i dont see him as a great leader. good just not great. i reckon he would do better without the pressure as well. i dont want to see too much pressure on cripps & weitering yet. give them time.
Hodge is old though

Would love to see us get Mitchell. I think it would be more than simply getting a gun player. It would send a message to the rest of the competition as well as us the fans and football community alike, that Carlton is once again a destination club. A marquee signing like that indicates that we are once again a club that players want to play for.

We got a great pick up in Docherty, but that didn't send shockwaves in regards to Carlton. The Docherty story was made about the mass exodus of Brisbane. A big get like Mitchell would impact the way Carlton is viewed. It would be big for the club and put us in the right direction in the eyes of the many.
Are we a destination club if players come to us because of the coin we offer? Agree he would be a good get but we want to get players on our terms and for a culture which the club is trying to build under Bolton. At the moment, pending how our year pans out, I feel Bolton is our biggest draw card.

Who said that it was because of the money this time around? The last time we supposedly offered a bit of money, but this time I think it would be different as we are developing a new culture, as you said. Besides, as he turned down a big $ offer last time I don't think it would work this time around. We would need a different tactic, and I think Bolton with the new culture are exactly that.

He did but so did Doc and I think this reflects the pressure of Syd. Kade did make more errors than normal though which is a shame bec he tried his guts out and with Doc was under enormous pressure more than most of his teammates
Doc said as much in an interview after the game. Reckon we'll see these two pretty determined to make amends this weekend.

So in terms of overall list management we are ideally looking to build a premiership team. Therefore we should have an idea what those 22 players should look like.

I might propose the following:

Backs: 2 KPD, 1 Floating tall, 3 Rebounding Defenders (6)
Midfield: 1 Primary Ruck, 1 Backup Ruck, 5 Inside mids, 4 Outside Mids (11)
Forwards: 2 KPF, 2 crumbing forwards, 1 marking medium (5)

In-built flexibility is also key.

If we assume that only players under 26 are possibly going to be involved in a future premiership (not too unreasonable IMO) then I believe the following players are already in place:

Patrick Cripps (Inside Mid)
Sam Kerridge (Inside/Outside Mid)
Blaine Boekhorst (Outside Mid)
Sam Docherty (Rebounding Defender)
Jacob Weitering (KPD)

And possibly:

Jack Silvagni (Marking Medium)
Dylan Buckley (Rebounding Defender)
Harry McKay (KPF/Secondary Ruck)
Jed Lamb (Crumbing Forward)
Liam Jones (KPF)
Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (Rebounding Defender)
Kristian Jaksch (Floating Tall/KPF)
Liam Sumner (Outside Mid/Crumbing Forward)
Lachie Plowman (Floating Tall/KPD)
Jason Tutt (Outside Mid/ Crumbing Forward)
Mark Whiley (Inside Mid)
Clem Smith (Outside Mid/Crumbing Forward)
Jayden Foster (KPF)
David Cuningham (Outside Mid)
Charlie Curnow (KPF/Inside Mid)
Matthew Dick (Rebounding Defender)
Nick Graham (Inside Mid)
Andrew Phillips ( Primary Ruck/Secondary Ruck)
Daniel Gorringe (Backup Ruck/KPF)
Levi Casboult (KPF/Backup Ruck)
Ciaran Sheehan (Rebounding Defender)
Billy Gowers (Rebounding Defender/Inside Mid)
Ciaran Byrne (Rebounding Defender)
Andrew Gallucci (Crumbing Forward)
Jesse Glass-McCasker (KPD)
Matt Korcheck (Primary Ruck)

So we need to fill the following gaps:

Backs: 1 KPD, 1 Floating tall, 2 Rebounding Defenders (4)
Midfield: 1 Primary Ruck, 1 Backup Ruck, 3 Inside mids, 3 Outside Mids (8)
Forwards: 2 KPF, 2 crumbing forwards, 1 marking medium (5)

If we guess that Curnow, Cuningham, McKay, Silvagni, Graham, Plowman and Phillips meet the grade:

Backs: 1 KPD, 0 Floating tall, 2 Rebounding Defenders (3)
Midfield: 0 Primary Ruck, 1 Backup Ruck, 2 Inside mids, 2 Outside Mids (5)
Forwards: 0 KPF, 2 crumbing forwards, 0 marking medium (2)

And we then guess on Viojo-Rainbow, Byrne, Glass-McCasker, Sumner and Jaksch

Backs: 0 KPD, 0 Floating tall, 0 Rebounding Defenders (0)
Midfield: 0 Primary Ruck, 0 Backup Ruck, 2 Inside mids, 1 Outside Mids (3)
Forwards: 0 KPF, 2 crumbing forwards, 0 marking medium (2)

Which leads me to think our primary draft focus ought to be on midfielders and forwards with defenders as a secondary concern.

That ship has sailed.
We'd be better off looking elsewhere. He didn't come two years ago, doubt he'd come now.
Exactly !!

What would be the motivation for him moving now, the chance to play finals or a big pay cheque ??

He's got both of those in spades at the Swans and we would have to pay him massive overs to force the move. People are already howling about the size of Thomas' salary and we would have to pay something like that to extricate Mitchell out of Sydney.

If he genuinely wanted to play for the Blues then that would be great, however, if he was only doing it for the pay-rise then you'd have to question the merit in all that.

I think it would have to be pick 5-8, 10 not enough imo
There's a big difference in value between pick 5 and 10. Not sure Mitchell quite fits the same elite player status that previous players have been traded for at pick 5 or thereabouts. Maybe SOS rates his enough to pay that much - dunnno. I doubt he will move anyway.

Its prob dependent on his year this year.

Well if you guys are having trouble keeping within budget, we will probably be very happy to take some of that load away ;)
From all reports I think we are going ok with our cap, we have a lot of sub 50 game players on the list now who are not really taking to much cap space. Mitchell would be a great get for Carlton though, absolute ball hog.

While he can certainly find the ball he is not a great ball user and doesn't break lines.

I wouldn't want to give our only 1st rounder for him. Maybe SOS can downgrade to get 2 first rounders with one to swap

Way too much !!!

Why would any player, who is on decent coin already, jump ship from a team in contention for the flag to the reigning wooden spooner ??

Next ........
Because he wants to move to Melbourne, barracked for the club as a Kid, and we're offering him more money now and are in a better position to offer even more in the future.
