Wow that is a very comprehensive and in-depth interview.
Its going to be a very interesting year, what will Harley add? How much will the 3 amigos (Ross's term) play? Will the Hawthorn coaches emphasis on better attacking systems (more aggressive spread and sacrificial running) help us make up ground at the pointy end.
You certainly couldn't accuse Lyon (and the rest of the footy dept) of standing still or not doing anything in their power to improve.
I take under advisement also what he says about building young players strong and to stay in once they come in.
I still believe he was too stubborn about sticking to systems when they had clearly broken down last year but I acknowledge he had very limited options available and I admire his faith in the systems we do have.
I'm excited.

Surprise how he rated Tab.

Non Freo Discussion:rolleyes:
His comments on Taberner make it clear to Tabs he is rated highly by hard judges and he needs a bit more belief in himself.
Michael Dobbin sounds old school;if you don't bust a gut you're not worth talking to:cool:

Hehehe my wrong, read it from the west thought not related to training report so just put it to non- freo discussion.

I love the first question:

Do you need to score more?

That is self-evident isn’t it?

Great journalistic nous like that would make one think that the interview was conducted by Hagdorn.

Bloody fantastic interview.
Don't normally see RTB that candid!
Thought Duffield did well actually. Pushed him on a few questions. Showed a bit of footy nous.
Very interesting hearing Ross' thoughts on Harley, Fyfey, Tabs and the 'three amigos'.

Some really interesting comments from Ross in that interview:

That (scoring more) is the aim. We have always been working on the score. We felt we got it right in the first half of last year and for a number of reasons it fell away in the second half of the season.
What do you think those reasons were?
Some things you just keep in house. We just lost a bit of method, a bit of spreading the ball. We were probably trying to go in a bit when they got numbers back on us, those sort of things. Earlier in the year we were spreading the ball really well and some players were in good form. It was a combination of both.

So for us trying to fill in some of those gaps, who were those players in good form who made the difference in the first half of the season? Fyfe, Johnson... anyone else?
Anyone with views on the "in house" reasons for the fall away? Is Ross talking injuries or something else?

Pav seemed to lose his one touch game also. At the start of the year he was marking everything and very clean below his knees. Mind you the ball wasn't coming into him as well later in the year.
Clarke lost the plot too. He was a good marking target in transition early in the year.
In general I would say we lost a lot of run and quick ball movement from the back half.

We lacked polish going in. Players lost confidence at about the same time we went through that shit weather patch - around the time of the Gold Coast game - because of a fundamental imbalance in how our club rates endeavour over execution.

Ross doesn't rate/trust polish so a bloke like Paul Duffield would get baked for a lack of defensive efforts and get no reward for his silky footskills.

Blokes like Suban and Pearce D who put in extra hard but burn the ball by foot get noticed for their effort but the turnovers they cause - which turn into goals - get blamed on a lack of defensive efforts.

Someone like Grey B will be a test case in how seriously Ross has addressed this imbalance in how he rates effort over talent/skill.

Brady and gutsy effort go together like Lucy Li and my erection, but he turns it over like a polyester pillow on a January night. Until he learns to hit the teat sweet he will be a borderline hopeless kick because he just doesn't finish well.

Ha you must be 40 -50 plus to make a comment like that - pre air conditioner days - love it!

I was a great Duffield fan and so was Sutcliffe by the sounds. He was really under rated around these parts.

However, always think you need a combination of the silky skills and the rough and tumble (like Grey to make sure you are not walked over). Hawthorn, of course are the best example of this, lots of silky skills but some really nasty boys who are not the most skilled players.

Mate I heard that even seeing Luci Li in the nick doesn't help you with your erection.;):p:cool::D:D:D

I think you're 100% correct about the run and quick ball movement from the half back. IIRC there were stats that indicated we were terrible in the second half at scoring from out of defence. We all know Johnson was a huge loss, but I think a few others are only now realising how good Duffield has been as a distributor. I guess he just ran out of legs and a weakness like that makes it too easy for opposition runners to break you open.
Ross also referred to a lack of spread - I can only wonder whether there was something about our stoppages that got worked out. Skill v application is a favourite topic here (usually cast as plodders v silky skills), however I notice that after round 12 last year Freo was leading the comp in kicking efficiency. The reason Sandi and A Pearce had such high efficiencies wasn't because they are magnificent kicks, it's because a lot of other things are working right - teammates in space, not being pressured to kick when we don't want them to etc.
