Kochie is right though. If a club has players suspended this season due to ped's then it's not right that they benefit from improved draft position.

So, how far down the draft does he think Port should drop?

Watching the Ross Oakley interview about that time, I actually got the impression Port were being strung along by the VFL to be used as a negotiating tool against the SANFL to build a representative team. Was it in 1987 the VFL first tried and the SANFL refused and then refused again in early 1990, hence Port tried the back door. But the VFL never wanted Port. So the funny thing is Port hate the Crows for essentially beating them to the punch but Port should also hate the VFL/AFL for using them as a bargaining tool and leading them on. But they don't, they have a cry at the SANFL because it suits their narrative.
All true. The VFL, who originally wanted the SA players, then realised that big money could also be extracted from interstate clubs to bolster their own VFL league. Divide and conquer was used against SANFL and PAFC were the perfect asinine Judas.

If you are a paid as a coach to coach and you know you don't have those skills, you should definitely endeavour to work with/get information from people who do have the skills to assist you to getting the best out of one of your athletes who is struggling with a mental health issue. There are a lot of resources out there for coaches to have access to. Going oh I know nothing about it so too bad makes you a poor coach. These days in coaching not understanding or even seeking out information regarding mental health issues is doing all your athletes a disservice considering how prevalent it is now.
You're paid to coach, not be an amateur psychologist. It's unreasonable to expect semi-amateurs to have the requisite skill-set to deal appropriately with every individuals mental concerns. They've got day jobs and dedicate as much time as they can to their after work passion and they don't necessarily get paid enough or the club earn enough to gain those skills. Seriously, where do you draw the line? Does the average ammo coach earning bugger all expected to adequately deal with players with depression problems. Their outside lives is simply not their problem. Not every system can cater for everyone's individual needs. It's called life and it's not always easy.

Carlton got those PPs because their team was bloody awful. The penalties coincided with the retirements of almost all of the 1995 premiership players, and they had almost no players of quality left on their list. They weren't down the bottom of the list because of the draft penalties they received, though the draft penalties didn't help. They were down there because of list management decisions that they had made in the years preceding the draft penalties.

Essendon are going to have a one-off year at the bottom of the ladder, as a result of them having 12 players banned for doping. This is an artificial situation, brought about by the club's own actions. If they finish bottom again in 2017, then so be it - give them the #1 draft pick then. They should not be receiving the #1 draft pick in 2016.
Right we are saying the same thing we both believe they should not be getting the #1 pick and the 12 players back.
Carlton was another matter entirely. They tanked and got rewarded unfairly IMO by getting those PPs as well as the #1 picks. Their list management was appalling but that doesn't mean they should have rewarded for cheating.

Must admit I got a laugh listening to Triple mmm on the way home. They were talking about the SANFL and the Tigers and asked for callers. '' Hi I'm Margaret and I follow Port - and the Magpies''

Umm aren't they the same club now?

That reminds me of Scott Hodges.

When he won his 1989 Margery Medal. His speech went something like this and I'll paraphrase "I'd like to thank my mum and dad and especially my parents"

Siggins in push to leave Lauderdale

By Adam Smith, The Mercury

LAUDERDALE will meet with prized off-season signing Sam Siggins today after the former Adelaide-listed defender asked for a clearance from the club.

Tensions have been simmering between Siggins and coach Darren Winter for several weeks and escalated across the weekend following a TV interview Winter gave prior to the Bombers’ TSL victory over Hobart City on Friday night.

Siggins missed the loss to Burnie three weeks ago with what the club described as an ankle injury, and was again absent on Friday night against the Demons.

Winter told Southern Cross the key utility, by mutual agreement, would take a break from footy to deal with personal issues.

The 22-year-old opened up to the Mercury late last year about his battle with depression, which haunted his final year in the AFL system and led to him returning home to be closer to friends and family.

He returned to the Bombers – his junior club from which he was drafted by the Crows in 2012 – but is understood to have struggled under Winter in the first third of the State League season.

“I’m disappointed that I wasn’t told that the coach was commenting about my future on TV,” Siggins told the Mercury last night via a brief statement.

“It’s disrespectful to myself and my family.

“I hadn’t made a decision on my playing future and was very disappointed with what was aired on Friday night.”

Siggins declined to comment when asked on his future in the TSL, and the Mercuryunderstands he will enlist the help of AFL Tasmania and the AFL Players Association to gain clearance if needed.

Bombers president Julie Kay said she was unaware of any application from Siggins to leave the club, but will sit down with him today in an effort to sort any differences.

“We need to get everything cleared up about what the problem is – we just don’t know,” Kay said. “We keep hearing bits and pieces.”

What a low act by the coach and club to play it like that. Hope they get roasted for it.

Spot on. The VFL had nothing to lose and everything to gain and played Port for all it was worth

Same club separate memberships...

Always enjoy walking through the gate at Alberton to watch the SANFL Showdown for free with my Crows membership whilst Tealsters have to pay to watch their Reserves play.

Even funnier when you see them wearing members shirts and laynards but still paid $14 to get into the ground.

Yep. Played like a violin. And they don't learn either.

Port 1990: "The VFL wants Port Adelaide because we're Port Adelaide."
Port 2016: "Chinese billionaire investors want Port Adelaide because we're Port Adelaide."

Um, yeah.

Rucci in todays paper still peddling the line '' $3million into Ports coffers over the next 3 years''

How? Where? As far as I understand it is money spent in China by Gui to promote the game in China for Port. Or have I got it horribly wrong and Port will be rich rich rich

Sounds much like last year's media "confusion" over Dangerfield's FA status

Cornsey was spot on.

its sad that his sons even believe the bullshit. They should be honored that his father had so much integrity and honesty. they make up shit about our club to protect the the minority of arseholes at port who chose to use Oakley as much as Oakley used them.

Good mate of mine is an avid punter like me and in July is meeting with an old Uni mate who now works for or is part owner of? A syndicate who run algorithms and find value in lines etc and bet vast amounts of money. Need 250k to buy in apparently. My question that I'll ask through my mate is how the hell do they bet big money and not get shutdown like we do??? Very very curious as to the answer.
I would suggest he works on the other side of the ledger... it's the only thing i can think of that makes sense.

I'm not against Essendon getting the #1 pick. They've had draft sanctions already, and if you're not going to give them the pick they should get because of ladder position, what pick do you give them? None again?

I think they're cheating so and so's but they've been punished and are doing there time.

We need to let it go and move on.

Give them the pick. The Essendon supporters have suffered enough. They deserve some hope, their club doesn't, but they do.
We as supporters have suffered a shitload more over the past 10 years. The majority of these deluded twats still back their club and their sociopathic fallen icons stance. Phuck em all, give us pick 1.

Yeah I have to agree.

Being brutally honest the ideal structure finanically for the AFL would be

West Coast
Fremantle
Adelaide
Port
Sydney
Brisbane
Collingwood
Carlton
Essendon
Richmond
Hawthorn
Geelong
Tasmania

13 teams and everyone plays everyone twice over 24 weeks.

Unfortunately we're stuck with a VFL/pseudo-Australian League.
Thanks Port

Search Youtube for the old Fox Footy "Headliners" program's episodes on the creation of the Bears, Eagles and Crows. they are very well done analyses on how the VFL was in freefall and screwed over the west and north to stay alive. The SANFL were trying to do the right thing and not only disagreed with having to pay a 4 million dollar fee to join a Victorian competition, but also felt that the number of clubs in Melbourne was unsustainable in the long term. For all of PAFC's assertions that they "saw that the SANFL was in decline and sought to secure their future" they failed to realise what the SANFL saw and in their arrogance forced the hand of the league. they also didnt see that they were merely a pawn of the VFL to get an SA team in the new AFL.

But as I said before, that all happened 25 years ago. Time for everyone to get over it.
I've searched for this and cannot find it, do you have a direct link?
