We watch those shows to hear them talk about out team. To validate our own opinions of the team or to gain a brand new perspective of what we have to do to improve.
I think the validation is a key aspect- I don't need a washed up footy player or media hack to tell me how the team is doing, the team does that by performance.

I can understand the analysis side of things, but the footy shows which do that well are few and far between.

It's free advertising. The more the Crows are on tv, the more they are talked about nationwide, the more memberships they'll sell, their popularity will rise (especially interstate) and you might get some young kids growing up Crows supporters because they grew up watching the Crows get praised and talked about on tv. For example, Eddie Betts is single handedly responsible for converting a bunch of young Victorian kids into Crows supporters. Why? Because they keep replaying his goals on all the footy shows and talking about him and beaming it right into Victorian living rooms.
I doubt the extent of this will be significant - the bulk of footy shows are on late at night or on fox footy. Can't see many footy fans with no allegiance holding out to watch these shows waiting to be converted.

Playing our games on a national time slot may do so, but that's a different matter.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned on here before, I'm just watching Backpage on Foxtel and they showed that Betts was trying to show the girl in the women's game how to kick the ball from the boundary line during the game as she had a set shot after a mark.

I think it was the winning goal too. For the record, she went the drop punt and it scored, but she thanked him after she kicked it.

The point I would like to make is that I admire and man love the guy. We didn't recruit a small forward only, we recruited a guy that yes is a small forward, but kicks goals, incredibly impossible for many, goal assists, mentors players before, during and after the game epitomises the strong values of a family man, loved by almost every AFL supporter and gives us national exposure via the AFL advertising campaign.

In addition to think in hindsight we paid massive unders for him today, a lot of credit needs to go the person or persons involved in getting him to the AFC.

Toast to Eddie.:thumbsu:
Well, it was certainly edited to make it look like Eddie was showing her how to kick the goal. I was watching the game, he was standing in the race watching the game, she took a mark and went back and took the kick. At no time did she even look at Eddie. He was putting the ball at the angle HE would have kicked it. Of course, TV doesn't always tell the truth.

Other than that, your post re Eddie's value is spot on.

Kochie is right though. If a club has players suspended this season due to ped's then it's not right that they benefit from improved draft position.

So, how far down the draft does he think Port should drop?
I think Essendon should receive the last first round pick.

You cannot reward them for being shit this year, the only reason they are shit is because they doped their players. So yes, the players have been punished (although still on full pay and have a job to come back to) and the Club has been fined and penalised (fines and legal fees were paid by benefactors and insurance), but to then say - oh hey, poor you guys, you lost your players for doping, and you played shit all year, heres the best draft pick for your efforts. Of course, you'll get all your players back next year, but what the heck!

I'm sure the magic faraway tree will provide all the money needed to pay for the resource needed to cater for every imaginable situation
AFL coaches even in the amateur and youth level are required to undertake training every year and particularly when new issues arise. Reckon the AFL would be all over this and include a section on dealing with depression in players. It's not like the AFL don't have the resources to do this.

Honestly.. If I were the AFL Commission, I would have banned them from the first 2 rounds of the draft until 2020.

Given that they haven't been banned.. their first round draft pick should at least be moved to the end of the first round.
Agree. Why should the innocent #1 draft pick have the misfortune of having to go to Essendon.

Just let the baby have its bottle. They've been through enough and the #1 pick is pretty minor in the scheme of things. Didn't really do much good for Carlton, Melbourne and GoldCoast etc.

thats a bit harsh considering they're not a top 4 team, possibly not even a top 8 team. What about they get the picks that the team finishing 9th should? Probably accurately (or there abouts) gives them the picks they would have if it wasn't for the suspension, without taking anything away from the struggling teams.

It's not about what it does for Essendon, it's what it doesn't do for a team like Brisbane who are on par with Essendon and don't have 12 players returning next year.

Bombers lost two years worth of draft picks back when the AFL sanctioned them IIRC. Same as we lost for hypothetically overpaying Tiprat.
But the VFL then gave them back a second round pick - justice:rolleyes:

So we received a much greater penalty from the VFL than Essendon did, in fact they have not received ANY penalty from the VFL for doing illicit drugs - go figure.

And then they get pick one in the draft as a reward, you couldn't script this shit.

The only time the AFL are all over something is when they're ******* it up
No no no. When it is about the optics, they are all over it. Racism? Got it covered. Women? That too. Mental Health? Tick. Integrity? Got a whole department! It's things like the handling of the Essendon saga, rule changes, fixtures that they just constantly **** up.
