Depression is hardly a niche issue. Certainly a coach shouldn't have to be able to provide the same sort of psychological support that a trained medical professional can, but what we're talking about here is a very basic understanding of an extremely common ailment that lots of people have to deal with every day.

That isn't something just a coach should have to deal with, it's something every person should know how to approach. It's a very basic and necessary skillset if you're going to be in the business of dealing with people, as coaches are. And it doesn't take much training to identify possible depression and say okay this person is clearly going through some stuff maybe I should change my approach here.

Burying your head in the sand and saying oh it isn't my speciality is naive and potentially very harmful.
Could habitual marijuana use provide symptoms similar to depression? If you think an amateur coach should be expected to be equipped in this area you're mad.

700k is what Richmond and North we're offering him to leave, when he re-signed late last year it was reported he took considerable unders. But why let facts get in the way of a good story.
Hold on you don't get to say "it was reported" and then throw words like facts around

AFL coaches even in the amateur and youth level are required to undertake training every year and particularly when new issues arise. Reckon the AFL would be all over this and include a section on dealing with depression in players. It's not like the AFL don't have the resources to do this.
Huh?

You've become so paranoid about that AFL you have given them mythical power & reach

The story as it reads suggests the coach didn't want to touch the issue with a ten foot pole because he had "personal issues", so he cut him from the team in the most indirect and public way possible. Do you condone that behaviour? Let's not warp the conversation, no one is (or should be) saying the coach should be able to perform a diagnosis. At the very least I am saying he should be educated or aware enough that he can approach the situation in a better way. That means talking to Sam. I feel like that didn't happen. He clearly knows Sam is dealing with something, he just didn't want any part of it.

Obviously I'm going off the same report you are, I just feel you're condoning dangerously ignorant behaviour here. What the coach did is head meeting sand, no two ways about it.

Good point, I should be saving my money for my trip to Shanghai next year.

Don't forget to pack this, or you will die.

Shanghai is actually a fabulous city. It does have its issues but its probably one of few places in China I'd visit again.
My friend told me Shanghai is truly hell on earth. He had just been to Hong Kong though I so imagine he found the change pretty jarring.

I loved it, however it does take a bit to get used to how busy it is. So many things to do, and the food is absolutely amazing.

Its easy to talk about it here, but betting on horses is really a mugs way to punting. Most and I mean most horse punters lose. Far far easier to earn a few dollars at footy punting than at the horses.

A little fun fact, if you backed the Crows and only the Crows this year at the line before each game, you would be that far ahead its not funny. From memory, I think its only the Cats game which screwed Crows punters.
I've never been much of a gambler, so excuse me if this is the dumbest question, but what do you mean by "the line"? I've heard it mentioned a few times and now I am curious. I'm guessing it's something to do with the margin/score?

I'd like to know as well. No F'ing idea.

And Chinese food is god awful. Indian, Turkisk, Greek and Italian are much better IMO

I liked it. It didn't whack me in the face like other cities however and I'm not yearning to go back to China but there's still lots of the country I haven't seen yet but the people get a bad rap for being rude and unfriendly but apart from the fact they don't understand the concept of a line I found them to be nice people. Was at the bund for New Year's Eve a year or two ago. Bit of a letdown as no fireworks that year.

Is it the same statistician who suggests Sydney are the most popular AFL club with over 750K supporters that came up with the stat that 4m people watch the Port games in China.

I would be curious to know how many people watch the ALeague in China. Have a mate who lives in Beijing and they take the SBS feed of ALeague games on the same channel Port was played on. The Port v Essendon game was delayed as they showed the United game live that night.
