Pardon my intrusion - I get where you are coming from but I very firmly disagree. Clinical depression is in fact not "an extremely common ailment" but if you think someone in your group is suffering from depression then best to talk to a qualified person who can then make an approach if required.

The problem for a lay person dabbling with mental health issues is that he/she/transgender will be deemed to have the same standard of care as a medical professional in that area - which raises medical negligence issues. Same thing for other areas (e.g. a lawyer advising a client on investments = a stockbroker). Plenty of case law on this.

I would certainly not expect an organization such as the AFL or its servants/agents to take on this role. Its lawyers would be all over it.
Ok I can see where you want to go and I mostly agree. But then how do you explain '' RUOKM8'' days etc? ''Gee sorry mate I would tell you to see a doctor coz I think you could be depressed but you might sue me''. Fairly extreme but that's what I took. Its not dabbling. Nobody apart from professionals would presume to offer a diagnostic assessment , but you can offer a word of advice and say best see a doctor.

The story as it reads suggests the coach didn't want to touch the issue with a ten foot pole because he had "personal issues", so he cut him from the team in the most indirect and public way possible. Do you condone that behaviour? Let's not warp the conversation, no one is (or should be) saying the coach should be able to perform a diagnosis. At the very least I am saying he should be educated or aware enough that he can approach the situation in a better way. That means talking to Sam. I feel like that didn't happen. He clearly knows Sam is dealing with something, he just didn't want any part of it.

Obviously I'm going off the same report you are, I just feel you're condoning dangerously ignorant behaviour here. What the coach did is head meeting sand, no two ways about it.
Actually, if you'd read further the President made it clear the club has no idea what's going on. They're not aware of a transfer request and are relying on bits and pieces from unrelated parties. The coach was obviously asked a question about an ex-AFL listed player, as you'd expect, and answered in the best way he could given he had no information. Siggins is taking some time off due to personal reasons, which are already well and truly on the record. Seems the most appropriate response given the circumstances. I suppose he could have said that he didn't know, Siggins has ceased making contact or a nice simple "no comment, next question".

Ha ha ha massive fail. All it says is that he signed with Port and resisted offers from other clubs. Says nothing about accepting less money, you've just added that in.
Seems we're both reading what we want into it. I'm sure someone, might've been Tredrea, came out and said he took unders to stay. I very much doubt we're paying him 700k

From memory it is substantial. Got offered truckloads by richmond and forced port to up to somewhere around 600 over 5 years.

I think Tredrea stated it was 550-600k. Probably overs but he's a quality player when he's on and once the cap goes up it won't look too bad.

Different topic but how's Jenkins signature coming along? Seems his price would be going up by the week this season. He's got Connors as his manager doesn't he? Connors loves to make sides squirm.

I literally just read a roach article proclaiming port to be the most successful club in Australia, by stating the exact opposite of that headline, in that it the AFL has given the go ahead for all their flags to be recognised.

Reading this article however I see...

"The Commission has decided that each club has the option to decide how it will recognise its history across VFA/VFL or SANFL (for Port Adelaide)/AFL, depending on its continuous passage as a club."

So in other words, Port had declared that Port are the most successful club in the land.

So, situation normal then, nothing to see here. Gotcha.

Yes, it is all a matter of degree, but in the context of footy (this thread) I think it very problematic to extend a coach's core function by mission creep, albeit with good intentions. It can be the thin end of the wedge.

Not true, he took unders to stay and was more interested in length of contract to stay at his beloved Port than $$$ amount. I heard it was around 450
I heard it was 650 and he stayed because he loved looking at the heat maps on the Port board.

Port can recognise and celebrate however many flags it wants, great for them. I follow the Australian Football League wherein Port has won 1 premiership. End of discussion.

Interesting. I wasn't saying the coach should try to give medical advice though. I was saying they should speak with the player. That isn't allowed?

Diagnosed clinical depression might not be extremely common but considering it's a spectrum, it absolutely is common.

A good coach wouldn't need to have it as part of his function as a coach , he would have it as part of his personal makeup
