I don't get it at all shouldn't SA teams get those NT Areas and Vic teams gets the Tassie areas?
What is the Tasmanian divide like?

From what I can tell it seems as though AFC and Port will share indigenous talent in SA, same for Freo/WCE in WA.

I'm not sure what the stats are but I suspect the NT division of areas to those clubs balances the zones they have been given in Vic.

About the only thing Cam Newton would have learned from training at Richmond would be how not to choke in the finals every year

Article says Sa/Wa club allocation is going to be sorted soon
all well and good, but Victorian clubs should not have gotten dibs in the NT, especially not Hawthorn or Collingwood.

presumably they were able to grease a deal on the basis of being able to pay their own way up there.

I don't think it is indigenous only is it? Some pertinent bits from the article:

VICTORIAN clubs have been given seed funding to establish club-branded academies in allocated areas throughout Victoria and the Northern Territory in a radical plan to attract youngsters from non-traditional football backgrounds to the game.

Under the plan unveiled to clubs on Tuesday, they will be given the chance to invest in specific regions to attract youngsters from diverse backgrounds and indigenous heritage to play AFL and develop elite talent within those areas.

Football operations boss Mark Evans said the AFL was determined to make sure people who might not have been raised with a traditional football background feel welcome to play the game and are attracted to the AFL.

If a club develops a young Australian from an Asian or African background and wants to draft them, then they will receive a discount on a basis similar to the current bidding system. Clubs will be able to apply for draft discounts on other youngsters from non-English speaking backgrounds if they develop the player in a similar manner.

For indigenous players from under-represented areas such as the Pilbara, incentives will also exist for clubs to develop and nurture talent in those areas.

The AFL believes the draft bidding system will stop clubs from trying to exploit the system by enticing talent to move into their areas.

The AFL will meet with South Australian and West Australian clubs regarding the allocating of regions in those states, and is in the process of finalising the allocation of regions in Tasmania.
It appears to emit a very stinky odour IMO. Look at the qualifiers:
  • non-traditional football backgrounds
  • diverse backgrounds
  • indigenous heritage
  • non-English speaking
  • under-represented areas

What does that even mean, non traditional footy background?

So for example some kid born in Australia but because his parents moved from Asia he can go through an academy?

It's a door opener. In a year or two the academies will be full blown with drafting rights like the northern states have

Probably get Northern Outback SA with Port getting the West.
I'd be happy with that. It's not so much the indigenous aspect I'm concerned with. When the zones/academies go fully operational you can bet your bottom dollar they will follow the boundaries established now. We need to secure our interests and I hope Fages is all over it
