COLLINGWOOD president Eddie McGuire admits he’s not in a position to confirm or deny revelations up to a quarter of the club’s players tested positive to illicit drugs over the summer.
The Herald Sun is reporting that up to 11 Magpies tested positive to drugs via hair testing during the pre-season period.
Under the off-season hair testing regimen, clubs are informed of the raw numbers, but they are not told the identity of players who test positive.
“It could well be the truth because we don’t find out. We get peace meal information. We are speaking to the AFL in the next couple of weeks about the hair testing results,” Eddie McGuire told Fox Footy in response to hearing the news fromn the herald Sun’s Jon Ralph.
“Until the clubs have actually got some control over it there’s no point talking to the clubs.
It’s an AFL and AFL Players’ Association matter. We’ve been talking about this for a long time. “Collingwood has been very strong on it. That’s the first I’ve heard of it so there’s no further comment from the club.
“If we had any further comment we probably couldn’t anyway because these things are supposed to remain confidential.”
Fox Sports understands the AFL has ramped up hair testing under the new illicit drugs policy and 14 out of the 18 clubs had every player tested in the most recent off-season. The remaining four clubs had approximately 75 per cent of their players screened.
Hair testing is a voluntary arrangement with the players and the results do not count as a strike under the AFL-AFLPA illicit drugs policy.
However, the players that test positive will be subject to target testing in the future.
