I thought I'd be satisfied after hearing the news this morning but the way this day has played out I'm not. I'm furious.

The AFL and their affiliates in the media are corrupt. Nobody should be defending Essendon or their players. Nobody should be questioning the sanction. There are 17 other teams who've had their code dragged through the mud. There are teams who've done far less and been penalised far worse. There are fans from all 18 teams that have been let down, particularly Essendon's. Don't talk about the players wages being paid while under sanction today, instead offer Essendon's members a refund.

I'm absolutely livid about this too. What little respect I had for the AFL has totally evaporated today. WADA has exposed them for the frauds they are.

You have every right to be. FFS players are playing the anti-hero card. They had only themselves to blame once they started lying to the AFL, I can understand the pressures of why they followed what the coach said, but the opportunity to report the EFC for this was always there.

Drug cheats are a disgrace. CarlLewis denied a gold medal because of this campaigner that cheated.

In the end I'm extremely pleased that something is being done while at the same time extremely disappointed that not enough is being done.

A year off for the players sounds about right. No sympathy at all for any of them. They all cheated and repeatedly lied about it.

But for Essendon as a club to escape this with no further penalty is mind-boggling. They'll end up with the number 1 pick for doping 34 of their players.

We already knew the AFL Commission was corrupt, so Gill's nonsense today (along with everything else coming from the AFL) is not at all surprising.

Really all I have to say about this is:

- I have some sympathy for the players. Some.
- Good on WADA for appealing and therefore sending a big '**** you' to the AFL's so-called independent tribunal.
- Whilst I have a bit of sympathy for players who were told they were taking WADA-compliant substances and were in a group environment, I fully agree with McDevitt's sentiment that if you are not harsh on doping in sport, it's unfair on clean athletes.
- Watson should do the right thing and hand in his Brownlow. Do not wait for it to be stripped from you. I doubt whether Mitchell or Cotchin will accept any retroactive medals they are offered, though.
- The doping (as opposed to lawsuit) part of this is all over, and thank goodness for that. They're banned, it's done, doping in sport is not acceptable and will not be allowed to slide in order to protect the financial interests of a league.

Trouble is Lewis himself was busted for using drugs a few years later. I no longer watch the Olympics or cycling. Too many drug cheats for mine. AFL is a joke right now, they have to punish WFC with draft sanctions. Why would they be rewarded with #1 picks for the next few years?

Agree with all the AFL backlash.

Although I think the players needed the punishment, I feel for them as well. There wouldn't be too many young men in that situation/environment who would have acted differently. Let's be honest. The club deserves more for putting them in that situation.

I'm so pissed off with the how the AFL and Bombers have reacted to this. The AFL should not be speaking about how tough it is on the players. That in its self shows that they are corrupt and wanted this swept under a rug. The Bombers new management should not be allowed to be stating that this decision is unfair on players, think about their families bullshit. They need to accept that the previous administration was bogus and that they are now here to ensure this never happens again. **** Hird and the AFL.

Didn't we used to laugh at the "rabble" that is the NRL and bleet about how much substance and how well run our competition is. What a joke. Everyone involved in the AFL tribunals original decision needs to be publically named and then sacked. Gill and his cronies also need to go. This competition is a disgrace.

Agree with you. It appears now that Hird and company even hid this from the club doctor. Imagine the pressure an 18 year old Little Johnny would have been faced with when all these so called experts/legends would have been putting pressure on him to conform to the program. It's also damning from the perspective of the senior players who should have known better and should have at least questioned the program.

This is brilliant post that should be on the main board. Says it all.

Watched this recently, basically in the years following, every runner in that final would have some connection to drugs attached to them, though not all were charged (I believe).

Thats pathetic and embarrassing.

Reminds me of these cheats,

The media are all over these drug cheats, who also were victims of systematic doping by their coaches and trainers.

But the Essendon 34 were just "lost innocent young men".

Even though Dustin Fletcher is older than I am................

By my count, though I am happy to be corrected, we lost 5 to their 3.
2 x 2013 first round (Our's and Sydney's)
1 x 2013 second round
1 x 2014 first round
1 x 2014 second round

Although the AFL did help us out by rejecting Jessie White.
Except you can't lose something you never had.

And in 2013 we gave up our 1st & 3rd round picks.

I'm confused about Dustin when drug reports first came out I thought he didn't take any as he believed that he already had been playing well for a long time and didn't need anything extra.
Yet he was on the list.
Is it believe he didn't take all supplements and stopped early?
