Freo pinched him from the Hawks with the go home factor
Hawthorn delisted him and we picked him up with a late pick in the rookie draft.

This was posted by a Hawthorn supporter at the time:

From what I understand Sam had an offer from Freo for a 2 year contract but he wanted to stay at Hawthorn. He requested to stay on at a base rate of a primary listed player. When Lyon went to Freo that offer was removed. Some interest was shown during trade week from St Kilda but a trade obviously was not successful. I believe Sam may not have received the best advice from his manager.

I would only be speculating as to what Hawthorn’s thinking was when they decided to delist him but I don’t think they were happy with what had taken place. Rightly or wrongly he was delisted based on ability or attitude, or possibly both only a few will probably ever know! I wish Sam well in his future endeavours.

No way in a million years one of our defenders would get away with running back with the flight and making blatant front-on contact and chopping the arms like Davis from GWS just did. The ump would have inhaled his whistle in his excitement to blow it.

It depresses me how differently our games are umpired compared to some other teams. Even our grand final was the first and only one in history where the unofficial rule of 'letting the little stuff go' didn't apply. Instead Nicholls and co umpired like they were on the lookout for a bunch of minor technicalities the whole game.

Big footy is hardly a guarantee, we also delisted Dylan Robertson when he was required but wouldn't sign an extension. My recall at the time is that Hawks clearly wanted to keep him but didn't stand in his way same as Robertson scenario.

The damning thing with menegola is his disposal has become better since he left our system. We don't improve player skills, we ****** them
I don't think we have ever been all that good at developing players. In recent years we have been better than the early parts of our history, but you compare it some clubs and we are barely average.
This is one part of the club I hope the new training facilities will have a real effect on.

I think most of us would agree that Sumich has set us back this year.
In the years with Simon Lloyd and since his departure up until Sumich stepped in we have developed some real talent.
Of course, there is something that Ross said earlier this year; you must get the recruiting right first.
