The regeneration of numbers is just a tradition. The great numbers (1 was the captain 2 the VC etc) followed by those numbers worn by truly great players (5, 8, 12, 22, 26, 35, 42) it just sort of tells you what the club and the coach thinks about particular players. (Eg....no softy will ever wear 26).
Its great for father son's too (Darcy Moore & Peter) (all the Clokes were around David's 33) and it teaches people (young players and supporters) about the history involved with a club as old and honoured as ours.

When a retired GUN player asks a kid to wear his number, it means he sees something in that kid.
I for one can't wait to see what numbers these new crop get.

It's just another strange & sometimes irrational part of following a sporting club.
The numbers are a direct link to the history of the club & past players.
They provide hope of repeated past deeds performed in that number (35 Daicos, we hope that whoever wears 35 can do some of the things Daicos did). They trigger memories.
Low numbers are considered a reward for strong/improved performances.
Some numbers are revered (5, 26, 35, 42) & whomever is granted the honour of wearing, must firstly earn & then live up to that number.
The number becomes part of the players identity.
I'm sure there have been numerous studies/thesis written by sports & or socialology students regarding the phenomenon of following sporting teams & the associated passion & odd behaviour that manifests.
It's tribal, you are part of something & the numbers assist in cementing your ties to the club.

Other clubs are announcing numbers, Dangerfield will be 35. Shouldn't be long for ours now.

Folks the 35 Jumper we know will be worn by Sier this coming season.

BUT every time I read something about the 35 the level of wanting this number to belong to one player longer term seems overwhelming.
It was an ok tradition (or at least to start a tradition) but somehow it doesn't seem to take.
Personally if we draft a Daicos that could spell the end of this tradition.

But who would you like as the perm 35?

And is it time to abandon this new tradition?

I'm more in the camp, doesn't quite work, was a good try, but ... nothing to see here, move on.

Part of the problem with issuing the number 35 to our first round draft pick is simply they do not play enough games in the jumper for the AFL team so we don't get to a) associate them in that number and b) we don't get to see the #35 as often as we would like.

Fasolo played 13 games in 2011, Elliott 15 games in 2012 Grundy only 7 games in 2013 and of course Sharenberg played none in 2014.

I would love to see De Goey stay in 35. I feel like he is going to be star for years to come and he can make the 35 as popular as Daicos did. My son would wear 35 if De Goey wore it as he loves him just like I did when I was a kid. I had the number 35 on the old duffle coat LOL.

If you want to honour Daics and Presti, have them select the player that gets the number when it's made vacant.
