I think when our first option ( trading for top picks ) didn't work out what we did was the best option because the top 30 does seem very even , most of the players mentioned look good . I've got Marshall , Battle , English , Berry Powel- Peper , Simpkin , Parfitt , Hayward , Venables , Brennan Cox plus a couple of others in my basket which means we should do pretty well basically whoever we pick , we'll obviously go for tough midfielders with at least one forward , a slim chance if English slides we'd take a ruckman but unlikely , Logue if he slides or possibly Cox at 31 but probably not a defender . .
It'll be the most exciting draft we've had for a while , looking forward to it big time .

Given that GC have such a bad track record with indigenous WA kids recently (Krakouer a few years back, Bennell last year and Garlett today), they may not take the risk on SPS at 4, 6, 8 or 10. He could be there at our old pick 9- arghhhhh!
I would like to see the AFL introduce a clause in the draft where Aboriginal kids can remain in their state of birth/family. A bit like an academy.
Too many boys cant live away from their family and it destroys their careers... financial future etc.

I know he will be going early and we wont get a sniff but there has been a very good 2 part story on Sam Petrevski-Seton on the AFL website the last 2 days. He has an interesting story. Coming from Halls Creek in the Kimberley he has had a different background to even most indigenous klds from the bush. He was a rodeo rider until about 16 - riding adult 1100kg bulls not small ones for kids. Any team taking him will face a challenge as he will get homesick and its not easy to get back home for a couple of days as part 1 starts off how hard it is to get to Perth from Halls Creek. His year in Perth with Claremont would have helped him acclimatize to the big smoke.

TO GET to Halls Creek from Perth, you need to take a three-hour flight north-east to Kununurra near the Northern Territory border and then drive four hours south-west down the Great Northern Highway. The population of the small remote town in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia is about 1000, although Sam Petrevski-Seton thinks it's less than that.

That's probably because Petrevski-Seton knows most of them on a first-name basis. His family lives at "the bottom end of town", near where the garden area creek runs. But his neighbours are also family – uncles and cousins are scattered around town. When he was younger, there was an open-door policy in Halls Creek and Petrevski-Seton would casually hop from place to place finding things to do.......

Do you think he might struggle with the intensity of afl? It sounds like he's already spent quite a bit of time away from home and has had to deal with a bit of culture shock already. He seems quite determined to make it.

The pull back to the Kimberley and family will be big. Its more that, than the high intensity of AFL that has me thinking it will be a big challenge. The Melbourne weather might also be a factor if he gets drafted by a Vic club. He struggled when he spent a semester at school in Sydney. Going to the Clontarf Aboriginal College in Perth, that has ties to Gerard Neesham's Clontarf Foundation/Academy, and being with other indigenous kids over 3 years has given him a decent chunk of time to transition, as well as this year being with Claremont and working.

I have Parfitt as a real chance at our pick 31 and I'm surprised there isn't more buzz about him here. Wasn't he part of our indigenous academy and highly regarded as a bottom ager last year? Didn't have the year expected of him this year but as his best is a tough inside/outside mid. There isn't an 17 or 18 year old player in the draft pool we would have a better dossier on. The idea of getting someone from our academy, would be attractive on a number of levels too.

Think his footskills are a major knock on him; theres a fair bit of loop - kane cornes/colquhoun style. Hes a good decision maker, agile and good with his hands but everyone seems to be fascinated with the taller, bigger bodied types such as clarke who probably has similar knocks than Parfitt. Added to that his height and our form with kane mitchell colquhoun etc

I'll openly admit to being a bit of an SPS fanboy, but cannot see that being an issue at all. Every insight into his character suggests a very well rounded and grounded young man.

Gee Dub summary of Jy Simpkin

Pick 17- Port Adelaide- Jy Simpkin (Murray Bushrangers)- 182cm 75kg

My love affair with my Bushies boys continues and I've taken a bit of a slider who, in my opinion, would have been up there alongside Ainsworth as a top 10 pick if he was fit this year. In fact, I have a clear gap between Ainsworth, Cox and Simpkin as the premier small forwards in the draft, however the difference between them is that I think Simpkin has the most potential to go through the midfield which gives him an edge over them both. The more I think about this pick, the more I think I actually rate Simpkin higher than Ainsworth, although he has a real lack of exposed form which may make me look silly.

I think Simpkin is a really balanced player who has a number of attributes and no real weaknesses. He has a really good head on his shoulders and is a hard worker, and has been super diligent with his rehab from the broken leg. He is reportedly a great kid who has battled through a lot of adversity already which will no doubt help him when it gets tough at the next level. I also look at the history of guys with similar injuries (eg Burton, Stringer) and the doubts over them have been found out to be wrong, as opposed to guys who have history of soft tissue injuries which are more likely to re-occur.

Simpkin's main strengths are his goal sense and his ball use. He certainly knows where the goals are but he isn't your typical selfish small forward. He is a good team man and will pass the ball off if he has a teammate in a better position. He is also very smart around the contest and knows when to go in hard and when to hang back. When he chooses to go, he uses his pace to hit the ball at pace and split open contests, and is difficult to catch.

His field kicking is very good and he weights his kicks really well. He makes good decisions with the ball in hand as well, and his ball use in general is probably his biggest asset. He is very good at delivering the ball inside 50 and hitting targets by lowering his eyes as he bursts away.

His tackling and work rate is also top notch. He has a real intensity at the contest and will put in multiple efforts to harass opponents.

I don't really have any major weaknesses in his game but that may be due to a lack of exposure compared to others in the draft pool. I guess not knowing how he will rebound from the injury after losing a whole year would be the main doubt over him but I'm willing to cop that and back him in.

I think he ends up at a Dayne Zorko sort of level and will be a combo midfielder/forward which will give Port that smooth moving, good kicking option they need that will allow Wingard to go through the middle and also let Gray go forward where he is really dangerous.

Picks 33 and 34 in BF Phantom Draft

# 33 Port Adelaide - Jonty Scharenberg

# 34 Port Adelaide - Matt Guelfi

I'm less than pleased to see Quigley put a wrap on Brandon. I had been thinking we could quietly steal him with one of the back end picks now not sure. I really want to see him with us might be tempted to go with him with a earlier pick watching the Big Footy Draft leaving us with Marshall / Parfitt as as first picks and bigger bodied mids as last two picks.

Matt Guelfi. Interesting selection on the BF draft.
19 yo WA lad. Never heard of him prior to this selection.

It won't surprise me if Scharenberg doesn't get past the tingle's first pick, but even if he does I doubt he will still be there at 33. ;)

They've got 3 of him already. He's not what they're after. They will look for speed and class I reckon.

Self quoting as i picked up Matt in the port board Mock draft
Collingwood Pick 66

Matt Guelfi 184cm 74kg Midfielder

Another 1997 boy for Collingwood. Good midfielder who dominated at senior colt level and had some real good minutes for Claremont in the seniors too. Nice hands in tight and knows how to roast the footy. Finished sixth in the national combine in the agility test

If we choose to pick mids with 14,17 Elliot Himmelberg is interesting prospect who should be available at 30 198cm plays fwd & back loves crashing packs and has good set shot with big engine. Still growing so part time rucking is an option. Decision making needs improvement via inside footy

I did a bit of analysis of the U18 Champs Div 1. With so many contested possession players in this draft pool, I wanted to see who did best when they were all pitted against each other.

Dylan Clark by a mile. I haven't done the Allies (cos mainly they are academy picks) or WA but Dylan had in excess of 50 CPs over four games. Then there was a bunch around 40 including Graham.

On the back of this, Clark is going up my pecking order.

Fair point Axeman, but he would have to get past the wobblers to still be there at our 30's picks.
I have seen the kid live, he is a see ball get ball type, bit untidy with his disposal, but specialist coaching may be able to improve that part of his game. ;)

Parfitt has been Quigs boy for a long time.

Id be shocked if hes picked that high

Will be a good player. Very smooth mid with a great kick
