I could live with Simpkin, Marshall, Mutch and Clarke (or Drew). Assuming Brodie doesn't make it to pick 14.

Very much warming to Mutch. Really would like one of him or Drew. Obviously both at 30/31 would be ridiculous. Seems like Drew's stocks are rising pretty rapidly though and could even go first round.

everything i saw of aidyn johnson in the magpies i was always impressed by. looked a player. just needs to find the ball more. but his x factor and class is excellent!

Needs to find the ball more. - I just hope this is not the comment attached to any of the players we draft with our first 4 picks. I want kids who love to get leather poisoning.

Needs to find the ball more is a lot harder skill to teach than you would think

So much this. HH syndrome - not enough footy but looks good.

We definitely need some accumulators in the side. Gray is a freak in how he's able to win so many of his possies, but he's the only real ball magnet we've got. Ollie gets consistently very good numbers but burns so much of it - if he can tidy his DE% a few percent he'll be right up there too.

But then we have guys like Boak and Ebert who are both good to very good mids, but constantly hover around the mid to low 20s possessions every week. I know we like to criticise Cornes a lot here but we need more guys that just bust their ass to rack up 30+ touches every week. We need some mids in the side that know how to rack up big numbers. In the past 4 years we've had players reach the 40 possession mark just twice - Ebert v Swans and Boak v Brisbane in 2014.

This is why I rate Sam Gray so highly, and part of why IMO Cornes was so important despite being maligned for his disposal.

If you take a player out of your side who gets 30+ touches a game, what is the cost?

Yep, there's no coincidence that our performance has gone down since the loss of Kane. Whilst it may seem pointless having those accumulators in the side is crucial and unfortunately for us you are right, Boak, Hartlett, Ebert, Polec, etc are all 20 possession a game types and we need a couple 30+ players.

Be wrapt with the first 2 and then I want the best inside mid available and someone with a bit of x-factor. I know he's little but Zac Fisher looks a beauty...

Maybe take a punt on Liam Ryan with 31. Or if Shai Bolton slides a bit...

Disagree- there's a difference between accumulators (Kane) and ball winners (J.Carr). We need the latter not the former.

Kane was successful because he was not only an accumulator but a negator as well - he would stop the opposition's best midfielder from getting those 30 touches while getting 20-30 himself.

So the reality was, Kane was good for a difference of around 40 possessions (-15 from the guy he was tagging, +25 from Kane himself).

Of course, as the game evolves the idea of man marking gets replaced with team defense so having a dedicated tagger becomes redundant because sides now recruit so that it's not just one or two players dictating the play anymore. But it just goes to show how important defensive effort is through the midfield.

What we acquired was a guy with 50 odd games experience due to a long history of injuries. He is a quality player, but had question marks. That's why we overpayed. And this was a year after we overpaid for a guy who we haven't seen for the past 12 months and is now in last few years of career.

I love them both as players, are awesome. But I also love massages, but I wouldnt pay $500 for one.
Yeah you would if it had a happy ending.

We need both.

One of our biggest problems in losses is our low uncontested possession counts.

As per HaaWingard... We need accumulators, but we also need ball winners. A couple picks that are a combination of the 2 would be huge for our list. We have far too many 20 possession a game players that just don't impact the contest enough.

We miss Kane a lot. He could win it, but importantly as Janus said, rack em up and stop his opponent. That was super valuable.

Brett Ebert has all the tools to play that role if we wanted him to.

Or could it be that those defensive efforts are still just as important but are now spread across more players (whoever that player happens to be covering) and so not recognised as much by the general punter

Yeah, that's what I said when I said it's about team defense now. You won't appreciate it because the role gets shared across the field depending on where each player goes.

It's why when Stringer lined up on Polec, Jared shouldn't have been looking around wondering where the help was coming from. He should have gone into defense mode and said "Right, this campaigner isn't getting a touch on me." Defense is about intent.
