List Mgmt. 2016 Potential Draft Picks

Would have thought we'd be going for a mid.

Inside mid - either Jonty Scharenberg or Jack Graham.

Outside mid - Alex Villis

There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for Jack Graham, all reports say he can win the footy but burns it a bit once in hand. He'll probably slide down the draft but I doubt to third round.

Had assumed Scharenberg would be our first pick.

1)
Delist: Monfries, Schulz, Stewart, Carlile, Mitchell (R), Krakouer (R), Hewett (R)

Re-Rookie: Snelling & Houston

2)
Then onto the trade table. This is absolute best case scenario sort of stuff. Taking the status quo as it is right now in terms of draft pick numbers:

Lobbe - Richmonds R2 Pick (24)

Hartlett - Norths R1 Pick (11)

Our 2017 R2 Pick - Jake Barrett & James Stewart (GWS)

Colquhoun & R4 Pick (63) - Brisbanes R3 Pick (47)

AhChee - Gold Coasts R3 Pick (41)

O'Shea - St Kildas R4 Pick (64)

This would leave us attacking the draft with picks 9, 11, 24, 41, 45, 47, 64

(Would maybe ask the question if GWS would swap 45 & 47 for 33 & 69, leaving us with 9, 11, 24, 33, 41, 64 & 69)

3)
Draft:
Predicting is hard and obviously incorrect due to no trades other than our own having been done, but as a crack:

OPTION ONE
[Ess1- Brodie; Bris2 - McLuggage; Fre3 - Marshall; Car4 - Petrevski-Seton; GC5 - Bowes; Rich6 - McGrath; GWS7 - Perryman; GC8 - Ainsworth
9 - Tim English (Ruck); StK10 - Scrimshaw
11 - Daniel Venables (Med Fwd/Mid)
24 - Josh Battle (KPF)
41 -Matt Guelfi (Mid)
45 - Brennan Cox (KPD/KPF)
47 - Tye Bedford (Mid)
64 - Oscar Junker (Mid)
R1 - Chris Jansen (Mid)
R2 - Codey Ellison (Ruck/KPF)
R3 - Alipate Carlile (KPD)

OPTION TWO
[Ess1- Brodie; Bris2 - McLuggage; Fre3 - Petrevski-Seton; Car4 - McGrath; GC5 - Bowes; Rich6 - Marshall; GWS7 - Perryman; GC8 - English
9 - Ben Ainsworth (Sm Fwd/Mid); StK10 - Scrimshaw
11 - Daniel Venables (Med Fwd/Mid)
24 - Josh Battle (KPF)
33 - Jo Atley (Mid)
41 - Max Lynch bid (Ruck) -> Brennan Cox (KPD/KPF) if unsuccessful
64 - Sean Darcy (Ruck) -> Cedric Cox (HBF/Wing) if Lynch is successful
69 - Oscar Junker (Mid)
R1 - Chris Jansen (Mid)
R2 - Codey Ellison (Ruck/KPF)
R3 - Alipate Carlile (KPD)

9 Changes to the Senior list - 7 Draftees, 2 Trades
3 Changes to the Rookie list including 1 re-draftee
that's awesome

Essentially with drafting we have to look at the talent we have at the U/22-23 age as they will be playing together, personally I think the best available with our first pick from there assess the needs but would like a mid or 2 and also a project ruckman/tall. just hard when we dont have the 2nd round pick.

Most years at least one expected high draft pick will slip down the ladder quite a bit. Remember that Brodie Grundy was in discussions to go top 5, then top 10, then slid to 18. He has now proved himself and should be a top ruckman for some time. Anyone like that we could target? I don't necessarily mean a ruckman but as someone who is likely to slide in the draft.

Witherden could be the A grade player who slides. Broke his leg a little bit earlier in the season. If he gets though the draft combine ok. He was talked up as a high end pick before the break. Composed outside player with a penetrating kick. Maybe?

Alex Witherden
Height: 185cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 10/9/1998
Recruited From: Geelong Falcons
Position: Medium Defender

A consistent player for the Falcons last year, Alex Witherden found another level in the backend of the season, where he proved to be the rudder in defence for Michael Turner’s Falcons. With a long, penetrating kick that sets up play from defence, sling-shotting his team into attack – Witherden is strong, bold, aggressive yet also offers polish on the outside of congestion.

Do we really need another back flanker?

If we are gonna pick a player who has slid due to an injury Ild prefer Jy Simpkin. I like the sounds of wither don being a great kick , but as a hbf / maybe mid I feel while good kicks are always good targets all our best kicks are currently in our back half. Simpkin as a very good ball user hff / maybe midfielder would suit us better as we don't have many good ball users in the forward half.

Was watching Stranger Things and thought "Gee Nancy really needs to go eat a few burgers".

Then for some reason was reminded of this thread, and our sometime fetish for drafting skinny short people.
Not sure why <munches on bag of chips distractedly>.

I love the idea of using late rookie picks on someone like codey Ellison. He has a great profile for our list.

Question. How's he playing for South this year? Any good signs?

For someone thats only played footy for 12 months he's played exceptionally well. Done alright in Souths league side, had a couple of really big games, great mark, really nice kick. Good potential and worth a punt with a rookie pick.

Witherden would turn into a mid pretty easily. Tracks as a Goddard type, or the player we were expecting Jacobs to be.

There would be minimal chance he slides to our 2nd pick though.

Jarrod Berry could potentially slide to our 2nd pick, but again he's another back flanker. Parfitt is one that could definitely slide.

I can tell you first hand Villis is a freak

They all seem like decent prospects, but do you think we should be drafting flankers or outside players who could develop into inside mids rather than someone who has already been developing as an inside mid? We need another inside mid who can preferably play next season.

I agree with this. No more pseudo-mids.

I agree, Jo Atley is one i'm really keen on but I think he'll be gone by our 2nd pick. We really need to get another pick, preferably in the teens but in the 20s would be nice as well.

Picking up Parfitt would impact our stoppages as much as any player in the draft I suspect. He's just in an awkward place as far as picks go. Don't think we would take him with our 1st pick but by the time it gets to 15 someone has a steal.

I may have my timelines wrong, but had we not been robbed of our zones, he'd be playing for Port juniors now?
The kid is from Cleve, which I always thought was our zone?

Apparently his disposal is elite, something we certainly lack. Ollie can dig them out, Villis on the boot?

Correct. Villis, Lebois and Stengle all played Under 16s for Port Adelaide.

While inside ball winning mid should always be someone we look out for our biggest concern is the footskills of our outside mids and forward half players.

To be honest I reckon our best inside mids spent way too little time in the centre this year too.

Happy if we pick up an inside mid if we don't have any mids/ forward half players with good footskills available at the pick.

Moves like lightning with elite agility.

Great blokes and can't wait to see their careers. Which will be nice considering all the careers lost by the zone changes

Talking of Ports zones - isn't Fiji part of our academy? Ratugolea is of Fijian heritage 194cm, 95kg - very raw but worth a rookie

Must admit I haven't watched any clips of Atley yet - will have to check some out. I'm a big fan of Scharenberg myself, although he lacks pace. Great ball winner and decision maker though.
