Yes but he is now of value to us so won't be traded. We have an average list with no surplus players of value except may be O'Shea to a team like the Saints.

That is the catch 22, you rarely get anything if a player has no value. List fillers have no currency at the trading table and you have to assess what you are likely to gain against what you loose. Players like Young, O'Shea, Lobbe, Neade even Amon or Ah Chee should be considered for the right trade. I stress that it would have to be the right trade and the players must want to go.

This on the Collywobble's board about Aish "Doesnt win contested football, slow, and not terribly hard at the contest.", glad we didn't get him and we don't need any more of that type.

It's not like he didn't have the Aish label on him when they got him.

The AFL have told GWS they cannot select Todd Marshall as an academy prospect and he will be going into the draft proper. They may have an early enough pick to get him as Collingwood traded their 2016 first-rounder and at the moment it looks like they could finish pretty low. But GWS may not want to use a first-round pick on another tall as they have Patton, Cameron, Lobb and McCarthy.

McCarthy will leave, but they also have Stewart and Tomlinson

Read an article about McCarthy after posting this. GWS have missed the boat big there. From this article on afl.com.au :

As it stands, the Dockers, the only winless club this year after winning the first nine games of 2015 and 16 of the first 18 before securing the minor premiership, possess the first pick in the national draft.
That pick could have been in the possession of GWS had the Giants opted to trade out the disgruntled Cam McCarthy at the end of last year. The Dockers' first-round draft pick for 2016 was on the table as part of that potential deal.
It would not surprise if the Dockers offered nothing more than a third-round pick in 2016. And there's not much the Giants could do to challenge that. Having refused all overtures last year to trade him, they know they cannot keep him on their list.

Not that they're short of first-rounders. They'll have theirs and Collingwood's and with the non-playing first-round draft picks they've got it's possible they could do more trading into the first round.

So there's a player in the Gold Coast academy who I'm really hoping gets passed by the Suns and Port pick up. I don't think we actually need someone with his attributes, BUT its a little bit more dear to my heart. Its my GF's cousin. My GF's parents are pretty strong Crows fans (mainly her Dad who is pretty fanatical) and her mum has came out and said 'If he was picked by Port I'd definitely become a Port supporter' which fulfills my aim of ensuring everyone around my GF's dad is converted for my own amusement. I'd then continue to take family members around him to Port games, get them involved and watch as his world slowly crumbles around him and his final resistance fades.

So anyway, if anyone can get Josh Williams from the Suns Academy to Port I'd be forever thankful. He's been likened to Jasper Pittard, and we all know how much Hinkley loves him. The kids family is predominantly from Adelaide so would have strong family support and the go home factor wouldn't be there. Get him over!

According to this article AFL is considering giving draft picks on the basis of average wins over 3 years - that means we would have pick 12 as the 7th top side:

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Sides bottoming out, e.g. Freo and Essendon, get punished while teams on the rise, e.g. Melbourne and GWS get rewarded.

The only thing that will result from this is an extended down period for clubs between premiership windows.

Yep lagg time is real there. The current setup is perfect. How can you judge a system that has never been allowed to run out over an extended period without compromised drafts.

Really the draft has been in place since the turn of the century as that's when picks became truely valuable. 15 years and 5 years of that are compromised drafts and they say it doesn't work. Please.

It will be an issue for the first year, maybe 2 years - but after that things will settle back down and be more in line with actual average results.

IF this was to come in, it would be a pretty good time for it to happen from our point of view as we are not going to lose too much ground - even if we just sneak into the finals with a 13-9, 12-10ish season compared to the top sides having much higher win counts.

The obvious loser is Freo and teams like St Kilda, Carlton and Melbourne are in reality about where they would be once this system levels itself out in 2 or 3 years.

Now would almost be the perfect time from a selfish Port aspect for it to start.

Enjoy the like, you devious bastard.

i dont think we will be doing any trades unless its for our third rounder, or maybe an adjustment on our first to go down a few in order to pickup a 2nd rounder as well, Lobbe will be interesting, personally if he doesnt improve id be happy to make a trade for a low 2nd rounder if we can free some room on the salary cap. I just dont think Ken has the guts to make a ruthless decision.

Personally id keep our first rounder at all costs because id rather have a real quality player than 2 maybe's. Are we in a position to lift our number in the draft order by Gold Coast & GWS needing points to secure some of their academy players

Me too. I just don't think it should be implemented for a few years. This is mainly cos I want the gws raid flushed out of the system first
its s stupid idea and not needed, history has shown that if teams tank they arent gaining anything but disrepect because the difference between the first 7 players in the draft is usually minimal, and very little difference between 1st & 2nd. The quality that the draft pick becomes has as much to do with the club as it has to do with the player.
