The McCarthy trade affects who is likely to be available at #9. Here's the new likely lead up to #9-

#1 ES McCluggage
#2 BL [Bowes] McGrath
#3 GWS SPS
#4 GC Bowes
#5 CA Brodie or Ainsworth
#6 RI Brodie or Ainsworth
#7 FR English
#8 GC Taranto

We are likely to get the choice of Scrimshaw, Marshall, Drew, Venebles, Louge, Berry, Battle, Florent, Sympkin.

At this stage a slider from the top 7 midfielders is unlikely but we probably need one unexpected bid (i.e. GWS going for Marshall at 3) then we might just get our top shelf mid.

Berry is getting talked up on other boards along with Florent they seem to be on rise I don't see English being picked up by Freo. Taranto getting talked up as well. Ainsworth maybe slides a little..We need another pick there are some very good players going to still be there in the second round.

He didn't look big.

Looked it up. Drew 188cm 78 kg
SPP 188cm 83 kg
Clarke 187cm 85 kg.

SPP and Clarke looked like better footballers, marks, movers, stronger, more confident and better athletes.

Drew looked ave. Maybe its the red hair.

Bookmark. Drew wins Brownlow in a couple of years. :)

Drew played great footy in the TAC Cup as a midfielder yet essentially wasnt played there at all during the champs or the all stars game. It's a shame we haven't got to see him where he shines, as opposed to being stuck in a back pocket.

Drew did better than most in the kicking test and did about 10:10 in the 3km run whilst nursing an injury.
Berry similar in that he did very well when released from defence. IIRC he nursed his body through the first half of the year.
Time to go study tac stats

I think you could throw a blanket over this lot but my guess as to who we would pick- Scrimshaw. Why? His Sandringham talent manager is Ryan O'Connor who played at Port, won a Magarey and who is a huge wrap for Scrimshaw. I assume he has an ongoing relationship with the Port recruiters.

Given O'Connors pretty tumultuous 1 1/2 years at Port where he nearly walked out then got sacked mid year, its a pretty big assumption that he'd be doing us any favours.

I've just been on the Freo board talking about the McCarthy trade. Had a look around at a few posts and the most popular draft wishes there seem to be SPS, Taranto and English. There were a couple of people on that board who suggested that English may be available at 7 but they wouldn't take him. Any likelihood he could be there at 9 and if he was, would we take him?

We need an inside midfielder at our first pick if we are to compete in the next 4 years.

Hinkley has said previously that he wants players who are ready to go next year. English is a few years away from being ready IMO, so I wouldn't expect us to pick him up.

If Taranto is there I think we'll pick him. If not, I think Florent is someone that would suit what we need. I still like Scrimshaw and reckon he'll become pretty special. I'll send the club a bouquet of flowers if we pick him :D

I am not that fussed about him being an inside midfielder. A genuine midfielder is what i want. Not an outside mid though. Particularly not an outside mid in this draft. Galluci. Florent. Berry. Drew. Clarke and Atley off the top of my head although 9 is over paying for a lot of the but they should be all gone by 46. Assuming we cant get a pick inside 25 i would look at trading out 9 for something like 14 and 22. The problem is i want to keep 9.

If Taranto is there, isn't it pants down lap around the table time?

Any chance we take young Bradley with a rookie

Would be even be talked about if it wasn't for his old man?

Not having a go!

Is there a reason Drew wasn't played as a mid at the champs. Is he shaky with the ball at tac level? I just didn't see 'it'.

Florent is really growing on me. There was some quality about him. I might have to do some research.

I think we would take Taranto at 9 but i don't think i want him. What does he play at afl level? He isn't fast. He is pretty outside. He is good when there is not a lot of pressure. I'm not sure what he is?

I really liked Berry. If he could be a forward rotating through the midfield he would be incredible. Looked like a big guy. Looked naturally defensive?

I really disliked Gallucci and Atley. I can't help it. Don't want them at Port.

Still reckon Marshall will be our pick at 9.

i had gone right off Marshall, then i saw a highlight of him running off his opponent, pick up the ball on the run at ground level a kick a goal. pretty impressive for a guy that is the best part of 2M tall.

id love to be able to get another early pick, say Ah'chee and next years second (of first if need be) for suns pick 8 ?

That way he could crab Marshall and Scrimshaw/Taranto/Ainsworth (all of whom are around the mark in ESPNs latest draft power ratings)

I certainly wouldnt go near Drew with our first pick but he did have a good year at TAC cup level. Finished 4th in the coaches votes and was =6th in the Morrish Medal, made the team of the year on a wing as well. I think given he's behind some of the other big names in the midfield and that he can play in defence he was shoved down there. I thought his game against Vic Metro was excellent coming off a back flank, but when he was playing as a shut down defender or a bit deeper he looked completely out of place.

The thing I like about Taranto is that he can get his own ball. He reminds me so much of Hartlett when he was very good in 2014. I agree he's slow, but I don't think that will be a concern at AFL level because he's so smart, gets involved and wins a lot of his own ball.

I've grown to like Berry more and more as the year has gone on. Didnt have a good champs but has played some excellent football late in the year. I wouldn't be upset if we read his name out.

I'm not a big believer in changing players from their natural game...but... what do you think Berry is?

He looks like a natural competitor. Has a massive tank and he looks strong. He doesn't look like he could bomb at afl level.

Dylan Clark had a really good carnival stats wise, many contested possessions. His brother had an excellent debut season for North Melbourne. It's difficult for the recruiters at pick 9, as we're one pick away from the 1st tier of the draft.

Berry for me starts on a back flank and becomes a centre square mid in 2-3 years time. Height, endurance, great kick, good speed. He'll play 250 AFL games.
