I am still baffled by Cripps belief that the player they want will still be there at pick 14.
We must think English of Marshall will still be available - they are the only two I can think of - I will be stoked with either.

Recruiters will oftne have a pretty good gauge on who's taking who at the top end of the draft.

We've got this great player we want and no-one else wants him!

Not that hard to expect the player you thought you would get at 9 would still be there a 14 if they are like me and have Drew at 9 or someone like that. If it is scrimshaw then i think you are tempting fate
Its tempting fate whoever it is. I just think it's a line that justifies a controversial decision. 100/1 Cripps comes out after and says "woops, our man went to the cows at 13!" Odds on he says we couldn't believe our luck!

14 for Sproule. I'd have to think about that. My gut feel is too early
I think he's the best tall forward, if the recruiting team agree then 14 not to high. The draft order is pretty fluid, Taranto, Scrimshaw and Florent rising while others like Marshall are dropping. I personally think we'll pick Marshall at 14 if he's there.

Most clubs have interviewed and agreed with the players outside the top5. Only bolters or sliders where a club has had a last minute change of heart mess things up.

I always put a premium on players who are relatively new at football or had had a massive growth spurt.

Off the top of my head with the last few years we've had:

bont
Blitz
cam McCarthy
Lobb
Cripps

Todd Marshal's potential is a good as anyone in the draft. He looks so much like Tom Lynch (Gold Coast) did at the same age. I'd be disappointed if he was available at 14 or 17 and we overlooked him.

Marshall looks like the kind of player we would not be able to develop properly.
This scares me though.

A good insight into this kid.
Marshall oozes confidence in his abilities but is aware enough to realise that he hasn't yet played a dominant 4qtr game - which is a bit of a worry.
If you cant dominate in the under 18s when will you?
I would be very happy if we pick him up - signs of brilliance but a risk just the same.

My preference is Battle, though I'm aware that Marshall didn't really get a pre-season this year. I'd be interested in seeing what he could do after a full pre-season. Has the natural talent.

Are they targeting one or two particular players or do they think there are a dozen options some of who will be there at 14 and 17 ? I just hope this draft is as strong and as deep as Cripps seems to think as we have taken a punt and we have to get it right this year.

Marshall. I initially was against recruiting him at 9 and I'm still unsure even at 17. With the height and athletic advantage he has he should have dominated a few games this year but hasn't dominated any. That's a red flag for me. I actually think he'd be better on a wing or in the midfield, at least until his body matures.
There's so many good mid options that we could possibly risk taking him at 14 or 17 given the picks we have, but I'm extremely risk adverse given the failure of our recent KPF recruits. The highlights on the recent AFL.com story are more encouraging than some others, but I watched him closely in the u18 all stars game and he was ineffective. They're comparing him to Lynch (Suns) but Lynch was a far better contested mark at the same age and had more influence on games.
For me, it will come down to who's there at 14 and 17 of the midfield options.
Bottom line is we need a KPF. So we're taking one at some stage, the 'experts' claim he's the best one.

Surely Darcy Cameron is worth a look. Tall and at a weight category that's not going to get him pushed around. Did really well at the WA combine. Couldnt be any worse than Lobbe.

I hate this stupid mentality

There are literally worse rucks than lobbe playing afl right now much less in the past much less not playing in the AFL. Just cause lobbe isnt our preferred number one ruck anymore doesn't make every two bit guy who hasn't played a single game in the afl better.

My point is we are going to be paying a guy big money to run around in the state league who's been terrible for 2 years, we arent going to lose if we take a guy that's ready made for AFL and will come at the qtr of a cost of Lobbe.

But hey let's run the risk of playing Ryder who's been out for 12 months and hope he plays 22 games because our 2016 ruck experience worked really well.

You weight it up against that he hasn't played any competitive football before the start of the season and had no preseason or preparation. You can look at the flashes of brilliance and maybe ask how coachable he is. I don't think we will take him at 17 he is still a 4 year project and we could spend the money on a FA in the next couple of years and come out in front.

Seriously give it up on Darcy Cameron.

Not good enough to be drafted 3 years in a row, not good enough to be taken at pick 31.

I wonder if Marshall one of these guys that gets talked up pre-draft (because KPF) but slides big time.

Like your Gourdis, Sibosado, Marsh etc.

I guess the difference is that Marshall has been talked up highly all year and fallen away at the end. Whereas these guys were the opposite, they all got talked up after some exceptional combine results.
