Taking a ruckman @ 9 in a midfielders draft when we need midfielders would be controversial but if he's the best available at our pick we would be silly to ignore him (English, that is).
2001 revisited

How do you think Jarrod Lienert would go as a rookie? I don't care how raw he is, a 22 year old 195cm wingman is worth the discussion. And all these top end picks, pick themselves. Its not how good your best player is, its how good your worst player is. That's what wins premierships.
I mentioned on here a few pages back that AA have said that AFL clubs have been in contact with him. Has a beautiful kick on him.

Depends on who is there but I'm happy to take a 203cm ruck / forward with great skills. We need talls. I thought he had presence. Friday was meant to be one of his word games and i thought he still showed some quality. Marshall was the tall who looked like a lost puppy.

Not a lot of vision around with Jy

http://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/...wrap-jy-simpkin-first-round-chance-broken-leg

He has all the tricks with ball in hand and offers good effort going both ways and shows a willingness to tackle and pressure. The next step in his development will be to become a more prolific ball winner and start to push through the midfield more.

Knightmare still seems keen on him hopefully he's ok to show something at the combine. Paige also liked him before his break as well.

JY SIMPKIN

Height: 181cm, Weight: 73kgs, DOB: 10/9/1998
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
Position: Small Forward

A pacey half forward with a bag of tricks, Jy Simpkin had a super impressive bottom-age year with the Bushies, but mostly impressed on the big stage for Vic Country at 2015’s National Champs. With deft touch, a knack for kicking multiple goals and setting plenty more up, Simpkin has an arsenal of weapons around goal that make him deadly. His improvement will come in the way of making a move further up the ground in 2016.

Not sure what it's worth Jy was given the job of writing the diary for the Academy Squad on their US tour. Is that a leadership thing?

There is something special about him. He's not a vanilla type - perfect rookie material. Rough around the edges but does some freaky stuff.

Does anyone understand the bidding system. ATM gold coast have pick 4 and 8. If Bowes is say pick 2 and they match, do they need to use their next pick or do they aggregate points from their later picks? I know there was a rule change so that you can only have as many live picks in the draft as spots on the list, but i am still confused as to which pick our pick 9 becomes? Also, gws have pick 7 and there may be a couple of players for them to match around that number.

At its most simple, clubs will be able to make and match bids on academy and father-son prospects during the draft.

To 'pay' for the highly rated players, clubs can use multiple picks to accrue enough points.

This example from AFL.com.au from last year shows how the bids will work:

• Melbourne picks Sydney Swans academy player Callum Mills with selection No.3
• The Swans decide to match the offer (this only applies to northern academy or father-son nominations)
• Each draft pick has a points value - in this case 2234 - and the Swans are given a discount of 20 per cent. That brings the pick value down to 1787
• The Swans need to give up their draft picks at 33, 36, 37 and 44 to have enough points to match Melbourne's bid and take Mills
• Melbourne has the next pick in the draft at No.4

To 'pay' for highly rated players, clubs can use multiple picks to accrue enough points, which will also affect the draft order on the night.

The selections that clubs start the night with will not be the same as those they will have made at the end of the draft.

The only time we move down the draft is if an academy team doesn't have a pick above us, essentially.

So if Bowes is bid on before our pick it won't matter as GC have two picks above us.

If Freo bid on Perryman with pick 3. Without going into minute detail, GWS match with their pick 7, so all that happens is their pick 7 moves to pick 3.

If say Carlton bid on Setterfield with their pick, then things will change. They will need to use their second pick (which at the moment is 15) and some of their 3rd pick (17) to match that bid. So in easy terms, GWS pick 15 moves to pick 5, pushing us down to 10.

If we did get Lienert, it would continue the tradition of sons of former SANFL players being recruited by the club:

*Craig Ebert
*Derek Bonner
*Gary Tredrea
*Graham Cornes

*Craig Burton?

;)

I seem to remember reading that if BL bid on Bowes at 2, then GCS will need more than pick 4 to match the bid, even with the discount.

The additional points will be taken from their next available pick (pick 8 in this case), and if enough are consumed pick 8 will drop accordingly.

Hopefully Essendon do us a solid, bid on Bowes, GCS match consuming their pick 4 and downgrading their pick to come after ours :D.

Of course none of this will matter after the trade period, but a man can dream.

I guess it just looks a bit worse than it really is as we don't really have access to these academy kids anyway.

That's assuming GWS and Gold Coast sit idle for trade week though.

For example, there is no way GWS will go into the draft with picks 5 and 7 if they are expecting Perryman and Setterfield to be bid on at picks 3 and 4. Much better for GWS if they go into draft day with picks 1, 16 and 17.

Although its an unpopular opinion, gut feel says were going to go with marshall. Doesnt make sense to cut butch and schulz and replace them both with two 25 year olds in vardy and or black we need someone to develop alongside howard even with his acl. I like sproule and strnadica but if your going to go for a tall you need to go with the one with the highest ceiling and although he doesnt show it on the park at the moment that person is marshall. Even still im at odds because butcher didnt work out at such a high pick though different situation due to his hip injuries.

Taranto is the major bolter of this year, i dont think we'd get a decent mid;sps or bowes slipping to us as much as we want them to. That would leave us with bolton, venables types who are the inconsistent performers

Their has been a change that will apply from this year's draft.

Northern clubs will no longer be able to activate "hidden picks" during the draft in order to access academy players.
The AFL has ruled that the number of selections a club holds going into the national draft must match the number of vacant spots on their primary list.
The league hopes the change will create less incentive for clubs to trade down the draft in order to accumulate draft "points", as some did last year.

If clubs with academies wish to bid on players in those academies will they be required to use first-round picks as any other teams will do or will they be able to essentially adjust lower end picks into a first-round pick while keeping their first-round pick? If they can do the latter does anyone else feel that it is little more than a priority pick system under a new name.

Just out of curiosity, can the NSW/QLD academy players opt out of the bidding system? If, say, Kobe Mutch decided he was confident he'd get picked up by someone other than GWS but he felt he wouldn't get the opportunities he needed to be successful while sitting behind 28 first round pick mids, could he say that he doesn't want GWS bidding on him?

not that i have heard, which sucks. But then again, who wouldnt want to go to the future 4 peat premiers?

im with the majority of AFL supporters in saying that they can have academies, they cant have priority access to them though

Should work like the father son rule in which case in your above scenario Mutch could say no.
