I suppose even if the rules don't allow him to stop them nominating him, he could always do what Josh Dunkley did and just ask them not to bid on him. Surely GWS would have enough talent on their list not to bother bringing in players who they know don't want to be there.

Speaking of Josh Dunkley, had the opportunity to go to Sydney or stay in Victoria, chose to stay in Victoria and went to the Dogs. Good career decision that one.

not that i have heard, which sucks. But then again, who wouldnt want to go to the future 4 peat premiers?

im with the majority of AFL supporters in saying that they can have academies, they cant have priority access to them though
Then why would they run the academies?

Who will be bidding on Bowes? I like the look of him personally

But he seems like a lock and load GC prospect

Same reasons we do.

I think you're missing the scope and size difference between our academies and theirs and also the intentions of the academies. Their academies literally exist to increase the talent pool for AFL players in areas that historically have struggled to produce talent - Port's do not exist for that reason.

The Swans for instance have 600 players in their academy, the Giants have 500. Does anyone expect the AFL to go all right, you're putting a lot of time, effort and money into these programs to expand the talent pool for the entire competition, but you don't get any on-field reward for that, just think of it as helping the community!

We got Dougal Howard and Logan Austin thanks to the GWS academy - and in the end, every team is going to have the same salary cap and list size and these players will be squeezed out and have to go to other teams. Look at Tom Mitchell at the Swans - father-son selection who is on the brink of becoming a star of the game and Sydney just cannot afford to keep him.

Yes, right now it seems like these teams are making out like bandits, but getting through the teething issues of bidding and points systems (and zones - Riverina for GWS is a joke) and it'll even itself out. It's a long term investment for the betterment of the game as a whole.

I'd hope Brisbane do but I doubt they will. GC have 2 picks after that. I doubt GWS will bid on him. So its really up to Freo (doubt it), Richmond, Carlton then Port or else he falls out of the top 10 and GC get an absolute bargain.

All funding in their academies would stop if they didnt get access to the players.
Umm...surely all that need happen is the AFL fund academies directly rather than via a club

The AFL already have an academy - having these ones linked to the clubs drums up more interest for the youngsters, plus gives them access to a professional footballing environment that is actually run as a professional football club. That increases the chance of talent being developed to its full potential (although with the Queensland teams, that's debatable).

Having it linked to the clubs is worthwhile for the clubs even if they don't get priority access to pick those players. Makes it easier to turn players to come back `home' if they get drafted elsewhere.

eg. We had a whisper in Toumpas' ear since he trained with us pre-draft, and probably have the same with Milera.

GWS would always want to show off to soon draftees

My thinking for the future isn't to wind down their academies either - it's to hopefully one day realise an academy for every team and perhaps a player cap per year. So at the moment, GWS has some very nice talent coming through every year - I'm sure they wouldn't just abandon their academy if they were only allowed access to one of those players per year.

The reason they were given these academies is they didn't have access to the same talent pool.

Growing the talent pool would give them access just like sa or wa gets access to them. Absolutely no different. I would say the number of nsw or qld players in the afl is already very very close to Sth Aus already and at the rate of the last 2-3 drafts will overtake us in a couple of years to be honest.

They seriously need to wind them back in the very very near future. Like always they went with the overkill option and like always they will wait far too long to react and make changes.

They should only be allowed to bid on players with a pick in the round the player was bid on. Ie if there are two players in the first round they have to match bids for both with first round picks. If they can't the player goes to the bidder.

So does anyone have the slightest idea who Port would be most interested in this year's draft? Bishop's most up to date scenario sees us landing Ainsworth with pic 10 (that's if we remain on pick 10). there's footage of Ken checking Todd Marshall out when he was playing for the Allied. Would be a good replacement for Westhoff I would've thought.

Anyone got any idea?

Don't take that footage of Ken checking out Marshall to mean much. we played an AFL game at the same venue that day, that is the only reason he was there. They could have cut to him making notes on about 20 kids that day.

Yeah I know it he just struck me as a likely replacement for Westhoff in the future due to similar physical traits.

We don't need to replace Westhoff!

tbh he's probably more excited about Powell-Pepper

Powell-Pepper really intrigues me as to how he'll go in the AFL. He looks like Dustin Martin out there against his peers, but theres part of me that thinks he'll never have it that good again and he's a bit too unpolished to really kick on. I can't see him being a genuinely failed draft pick due to his competitiveness, but I kind of get that Matt Thomas / Luke Tapscott vibe about his potential.

I loved Powell peppers game in the all stars. His movement in traffic was great. I didn't notice horrific kicking.

If there was a choice of Powell pepper, Scharenberg and drew I would have Powell pepper in front by a space.

I also like Dylan Clarke for Port but hey we need some draft picks first.

Here is his league stats .....

what are the thoughts on Will Hayward? watched the highlights of him having 12+ shots on goal in an u18's and it's hard not to get excited when you watch, potential good value?

Also, Max Lynch? Was highly rated earlier in the year coming out of the GWS academy, 200cm/96kg, seems to have disappeared?

I had never heard of Hayward before the all stars game. I thought he was fantastic. He was zippy and skilful. He looked like an afl player.

I thought Max Lynch was pretty poor. I expected him to be more athletic. He didn't do much in the ruck or around the ground. Other people like him, but i didn't see it.
