We are linked to a 79kg half back in this morning's press. Thought we needed another Ollie Wines not another Jasper Pittard ?
Witherden might be good but do we need his type? His attributes remind me a bit of Hamish Hartlett who we tried to off load. Witherden missed most of 2016 with a broken leg so without injury he might have been higher in the pecking order. .
We are also linked to Tim Taranto in the press but we probably needed pick 9 to have a realistic shot at securing him but if the Draft is as even as Cripps suggests he could fall our way.

Before he broke his leg I was thinking of Witherden as more of a Travis Boak than a Pittard.

Witherden reads like another Bonner.

Genuine mids and a KPF ... although Hayward, there's something about him. Parker is going to be having nightmares about the last medium half forward who kicked 9 goals in a game that he thought about but overlooked. ;)

To me the class genuine midfielders are all gone before our first pick. Then there a variety of types for the next 15 or so picks. Then there is depth in genuine mids to choose from at about 30. I like Florent, Spp and Berry as players for our early picks but I don't think any of them are meant to be genuine mids. I'm keen on Marshall, English, Bolton and maybe Hayward as players to fit our list. There should be tonnes of genuine mids for pick 30. Clarke is the one I want us to get, but it could be Poholke, Mutch, Scharenberg, Graham, Drew or Atley. (if Clarke is there and we don't pick him I will be a sad panda). There should be players like B. Cox, Berry, Sproule, Kerr if we want another tall.

We should be able to pick up someone like Barrett as a dfa and someone like Parfitt as pick 100 or whatever our fifth pick is. Then pick up best ruck in the rookie draft. (Olango, ladhams, darcy) We just need to move on Stewart and O'shea first.

The reason there's a WTF moment on every draft night is because most of us are all caught up in the BF D&T board group think.

We'd have a minute knowledge of these kids in comparison.

2006 draft thread a great example.

"We drafted Travis Boak over James Sellar, WTF. I'm nuking my membership as we speak"

"Robbie who? Well we officially ****ed this draft up"

My memory of when we drafted gray with that late pick people went gray who, then watched the highlight videos and we all got a bit excited from what we saw. I think a lot of people really liked that gray pick straight away.

I know there is a question mark over his disposal but I still want Parfitt at 30 or 31. The way he moves just has me thinking he's going to make it. Backs himself in to find his way through heavy traffic. And a good acadamy story to boot
I don't want him at 31 if he's projected to go much later, because it then means we traded pick 9 for 14 and upgrading 19 to 17, which is a horrible, horrible trade.

Projected by who though? Could be that we were always into him (we've seen enough of him) and thought he would be gone by 49 or whatever our 4th pick was before the trade.

Whatever we do, I'll be fine. We've drafted extremely well for the picks we've had the last few years and out of all our list management of late, draft day would be where I have the most confidence

It could be that, certainly. But a lot of the phantom drafts, especially closer to the draft, get pretty close in terms of player values with only a few left field selections most years.

That's why I said if - we may very well think he would have been snapped up before 49.

Witherden could well be the best kick in this years draft and also has plenty of scope to play midfield. Had he not broken his leg there's every chance he would have played a lot of midfield this year.

If he's there and we draft him, I certainly won't be disappointed.

I think most people were more annoyed that we picked Boak over Selwood and Thorp than Sellar.

People were more annoyed when we picked Paul Stewart that early too.

Yeah, and I don't watch the young guns much like yourself, so I'm no expert. He just has something that makes me want him at Port.

Just watched the u/18 all star game.

Taranto wont be there at our first pick, so forget him. Ditto for Florent and Scrimshaw.

Shai Bolton may however and has massive x factor. Wouldn't be upset to see him in Port colours. He's 177cm so may slide but he's got it. Really reminded me of a right footed Cyril but looks more at home in the midfield.

Powell-Pepper I really liked his game but I'm not sure he's a pure mid. Looks to play of half back.

Scharenberg played solid without being outstanding but must be in our calculations given his entire season.

I really like Hayward. Awesome kick for goal, has 'match winner' vibe about him. Negative is he's more a half forward type.

None of the KPF or talls really stood out but Marshall looked pretty vanilla from this game as did English. Kerr was probably one of the better KPF, Battle was good in the first half.

I hate the insinuation that we somehow reached for boak. The guy had been slated to go at pick 7 to Geelong almost since round 1. Hardly a reach at all.

I hate to say I want witherdon since like most here I want to see genuine mids but with our picks and the fact he is a great kick I'm ok with it. Berry and witherdon at 14,17 would be two very good and I feel very safe options to pick up 2 200 game starting 22 players for port.

Worse comes to worse we get the backs and mids right and allow enough space in the cap to buy another tall. Didn't hurt the Bulldogs or Sydney or Hawks.

what about darcy Cameron for a very late pick? could play kpf and ruck. he's only 21 so he could make an immediate impact plus have the potential to become a genuine afl player.

No doubt, but as mentioned a few pages back, there wasnt the saturation draft coverage then that we get now.

I literally cant remember boaks name being brought up here pre draft despite him likely going to geelong 2 picks later. So whilst it certainly wasnt a reach, it was a "who...what...huh?" Moment

I think if we want geniune midfielders then Gallucci and SPP are probably the best two options with those 2 picks, then someone like Poholke in our next group of picks. The best potential midfield options in that range - Perryman, Scheer, Mutch are all academy linked.

All the other genuine midfield options have enough doubt over them to fall a bit later to our 2nd group of picks - Scharenberg, Parfitt, Drew, Clarke, Guelfi etc.

There's a lot of very good players in that first batch who have midfield potential but aren't quite there yet - Witherden, Berry, Florent, Rotham, Bolton.

In the end, I feel we just need talent all across the park. If we get Witherden & Berry then as you say, they are two very good potential long term players.

Portia alert - people wanting flankers who could be mids as 'best available' and players under 180cm. :D

I feel like going berry and witherden , then going two best genuine mids left over at 30/31 out of spp, drew , gallucci villis, Scharenberg would be the way to go. It may mean we miss out on say spp (who I think would be good for us) but the reverse of going best genuine mids at 14/17 I think would mean reaching for players. So as much as everyone wants us to target genuine mids , and not flankers come mids which berry and witherden may be I don't think reaching for players with picks 14 and 17 is the right move , especially when we can target genuine mids at 30/31 and players at 14/17 have the kind of midfield potential berry and witherden have

If we get two half back flankers with our first two picks....

Our forward line is a mess. We delisted 2 kp f's this year and Shaw last year. The cupboard is bare.

Please gets some forward talent...then some mids...then see what drops to the end of the draft. Carn.

Whose your suggestions then? Talls forwards with picks we have ? I don't like Kerr with our picks. Probably not battle either. Leaves Marshall or Brennan cox.
