Does anyone understand how the bidding system will work if GWS lose pick 15 and 30 something. Will they still be able to match Perryman and Setterfield. ? Are Mutch / Sproul candidates for pick 30?

They can essentially match any and every bid that comes in, as they can go into points deficit the next year.

My problem with SPP is he doesn't get enough of the ball. His highlights are fine but he gets about half the possessions of , say , Graham or Clark.

Its the impact that he can have with those fewer possessions that is appealing.

Powerful, big bodied mids that can crash packs, win the ball, burst away with pace and kick goals from outside 50 can be match winners without clocking up the huge numbers

Thats what you get with SPP and Venables which is why i believe we should be taking one if not both.

And its SPPs ability to be so dangerous even from 50-60 metres out that appeals to me the most.

Except his disposal is average.

Especially if we also get a couple of "lower risk", reliable mids at 30 and 31.

More I think about it, if Marshall is there we got to take him at 14. Quality talented key forwards (Albeit raw and skinny in Marshalls case) are dime a dozen !

I think he could be anything the kid
Not your point I know, but I think the general consensus is that if Marshall is around at 14, we should wait until 17 because Brisbane (probably, hopefully) aren't interested, and the GWS pick will disappear (either because of Setterfield being bid on or draft sanctions). Which mitigates the risk of Brisbane snatching a player we really want with one of our first round picks.

missionpossible you had a crack at the SA talent development pathways in the podcast thread about SA draft prospects. Ho many SA u/18 players do you reckon will get drafted in the top 20? Nil? in the top 40? 1 or 2? top 60 4 or 5?

Except his disposal is average.

He's got a booming and accurate kick for goal - nobody even got close to his perfect goal kicking score at the combine. Also doesnt mind having a crack from outside 50.

Mix him in with some elite kicking/ distrubuter type mids who hit up the inside 50 targets and become dangerous both forward and half forward/middle.

Mids who kick goals from outside 50 are an asset IMO.

Then what happens next year? They start with pick 201 and do the same thing?
The real kicker is that with the huge amount of first round talent on their list their build strategy from the start was to be releasing these players each year for more first round picks. If they go into deficit and their own pick next year goes from 16 (say they finish third) back to 20 or something, they still trade out two players who walk into any other side for mid first or early second rounders, then maybe another player and one of those picks for an early first. For many years they will be able to put themselves in a position where they use an early first on a draftee and then cash up to two more for academy first rounders. They will have to trade out more first rounders to accommodate the new first rounders... rinse and repeat for a generation. It's ****ed.

Powell-Peppers kick is a lot better than people give him credit for. Most of the criticism is based off his 2015 youtube highlights which are 18 months old. He's improved his kicking and decision making a lot this year.

Draft picks get moved back in the draft, eg. Pick 20 might become pick 25
So the possibility of losing two picks this year will not affect GWS at all. Am I reading this right Macca? It does seem typical of the AFL and their wet lettuce approach to punishment.

my listing of having him slide to pick 30 was pure 'hope for a miracle' then take credit if happens. I dont actually think it will happen. I did notice too that the latest video of him was much better.

back on the deficit, do they get to choose where they pay it back. ie can they pay it back with a bunch of later pick downgrades instead of one higher pick one?

I'd bid on Perryman with 14. He's one of my absolute favourites in this draft.

Like his game, but not quite convinced he's that outstanding that he should go that high. Seems a good kid, but going by this I don't think he's a rocket scientist :D (not that it matters!)

I personally think English will be a future star.
Great skills and athletic for a big fella.

Completely agree. Terrific attitude, quality tapwork, possesses rare coordination for a 204cm kid, smart with his running, skills are more than adequate. I don't see a downside. I know recently with the successes of Mumford and Jacobs beasting ruck contests the more skinnier prospects have been marginalised a little bit, but I think his body shape will grow into a Goldstein or Cox best-of-both-worlds hybrid.

I agree with both of your assessments of Powell-Pepper's kicking. Do you want him in the back pocket trying to pinpoint zig-zagging leads through the zone? No. But is it more than adequate for the kick under pressure coming out of congestion in the middle or for a standard forward entry to a Dixon contest? Bloody oath it is - can clear 50m with ease with plenty of penetration.

The deficit gets taken off from the equivalent round draft pick the following year. So if they go into deficit by matching a 3rd round bid, then their 3rd round pick next year will be moved back.

but cant they use multple picks to accumulate the required points. They might use, pick 15 and pick 35 and still owe. So is their first or second rounder next year moved back. Or is it where the pick was matched ie pick 14 if matching Adelaide?
