Ramsey Bolton will always be the awkward kid from Misfits to me.

So, is there an AFL draft night drinking game? Just arranged to watch with a friend and thought we might need ANOTHER excuse to drink.

Yes.

A sculled drink every time someone says the next Wanganeen, Carey, Dangerfield etc.

2 drinks for a 'project player' or a blend of speed and endurance.

3 drinks when a club says we couldn't believe player X was still there at pick Y.

We would've seen a lot of Brendan Parfitt , I wonder if we'll pick him .
Doesn't get talked about much , he was very highly rated in 20015 but has dropped down the order this year .

Its Bontempelli and Caleb Daniel now

Big Bodied Midfielder = the next Bontempelli, (R.I.P. the next Josh Kennedy)

I did back to back to back beer bongs when we drafted Wingard.

Have a hit list and neck up.

The bonus is he should go into the midfield.
The Goddard comparison does seem to be going around not sure about the poor man's Goddard though. Think the worse outcome would be 200 games across the half back line.

Quality kicks never go out of fashion, so Witherden brings something a little different to the first round of this year's draft given there isn't heaps of class out there. He will take a bit of time but has the polish and footy smarts to be a natural fit at the next level off half-back.

If we are going to go all in on midfielders then Witherden could be a nice point of difference at pick 17. We would have already landed a genuine mid at 14 (Florent, SPP, Simpkin, etc.) and be picking another 2 pure midfielders with slight knocks on their kicking at 30 & 31 (Atley, Scharenberg, Clarke, etc).

In iscolation he wouldn't be my fist preference but as part of a draft class we desperately need to succeed I quite like it. Plus, players with both elite kicking and decision making are as hard to find as anything.

*still want Todd Marshal at 17 though.

His exposed form is limited. His exposed form in the midfield is virtually non existent. Therefore, his kicking when under the sort of pressure he will face at the next level is unknown.

We've drafted so called elite kicks before and found them to be wanting at the next level- Witherden is a risk plain and simple because we don't even know how his kicking stands up under pressure at U18 level when in the midfield. The question is when is that risk worth taking? 14, 17 or 31/32?

Still not sold on taking a injured half back with likely quality mids available Florent Venables Gallucci Simpkin*

There's just as many queries over Venables & Simpkins ability to play midfield, if not Gallucci as well.

Yeah. so I'm thinking jut take the guys with the highest ceiling at 14 & 17 (I'm guessing that would be Witherden and Powell-Pepper), and then there's still gonna be 1 or 2 of those high production non flashy genuine mids available at pick 30.

Simpkin will slot straight into a fwd pocket then Neade and Monfies will be delisted/retired at end of 2017
I actually think Monfries will be on our list in 2018. Unless he simply can't adapt to AFL after his break - I think he'll nail down a spot with some pretty good games and be offered another 1 year contract.

I don't know about "just as many" queries - Venables and Simpkin have at least been seen in the midfield, especially Venables who has shown in bursts he has what it takes to play in there, his consistency of impact is the big question. But they're not pure mids, no. It seems that Witherden was hopeful of giving the midfield a crack this year, but didn't get the chance.

I've only been watching the draft reasonably closely for the past few years - was only just getting into it around 2010. For people that have been watching for longer: How did Polec look like back then? Seems like Witherden has some Polec about him in the way he moves and lines up targets. Doesn't have the same spearing and dead accurate kick as Polec (yet), though. However Polec has shown that while he is more comfortable outside, that he can go into contests and get first hands on the ball when needed - could that be similar with Witherden?

Zack Fisher is a Polec mould
