The problem is we have not seen him. AFL clubs have seen him play about 5 games this year because they also get out to pre-season games. This idea that he is not a midfielder is something people need to get out of their head. Most bottom ages in the TAC cup play from a flank in there 17th year and then move into the mids in their 18th year.

I'm really talking about discussion on these boards. Most supporters commenting on the draft will not have seen him this year. So there is no exposed form to compare him to other midfield-type options who if we did not draft would apparently be the death of some supporters.

As you know AFL clubs will have been following these players for years before this year so will have a good idea of ability. So the generally minimally informed draft watcher shouldn't be too devastated if we pick him ahead of some whose 2 minute youtube clip is more current.

Would the coaches change the mids we use though? Because the draftees wouldn't be getting games over Wines, Boak, Gray, S.Gray, Ebert, Ah Chee, Hartlett, Polec or even Palmer, Wingard, Broadbent, and Impey all who can roll through the midfield.
We've absolutely got at least 1 if not 2 spots open in our best 22 for the midfield rotation I reckon.

Pick #14 & Pick #17 will be battling for those 1-2 spots with Amon, AhChee, Toumpas, Palmer & Snelling IMO.

The 2 open spots will depend on HH though, if he plays mid then there's 1 spot, if he plays HBF (which I think he should as he'd be a good shot at AA HBF if he plays a full season there) then I think we have 2 openings.

To be fair Dalhaus went a lot later than 44. I would suggest he is one of the few that does not get caught in group think. We see players completely different and our ratings are always miles apart. He is the sort of guy I would want on my recruiting team other than his write ups are to long.

It's easy to draft retrospectively. Kavanagh was rated top ten by everyone. I think Emma Quayle had him as her best or favourite player. He went in the teens because he tanked his interviews because of his father! Sam Day went at 3. Luke Parker went late 30's. After Newton and Young (and Ben Jacobs) and Ariel Steinberg at 31? It's hard to see the future.

I don't think any of us know how good Witherden is. He probably doesn't know. I just want us to draft towards needs because we don't trade for needs.

Here's what my little birdy has told me:

Pick 1 - Hoping to get Hayward. If picked up earlier, likely to take Alex Witherden.
Pick 2 - Marshall if available

Key defender we like is Maibaum

We're not into Graham, Scharenberg or Berry

We won't touch English with our first 2 picks
What about midfielders? none of marshall, hayward or maibaum in that bracket. I want marshall but reckon we need mids with the rest of the picks. Witherden would end up being one imo

I think I've re-addressed my wish list for the period. I think we need to find a half back flanker, with our late picks.

So I think I'd like to see us take 3 Mids, 1 KPF, 1 KPD, 1 HBF & Brett Eddy.

The KPD and HBF should only be taken with pick 31 or higher though.

TBH im slightly disappointed at the players we have been linked to so far at 14/17. I mean yes they are mostly all decent prospects but i struggle to see some of them making a huge difference.

I really, really want to us to take a punt on an big bodied, big impact midfielder/forward who has grunt, genuine pace, the ability to break lines and the ability to finish from outside 50.

We have distributers. We have outside run. But name me one player on our list who combines the size to crash through a pack and emerge ball in hand, with the pace to break away and the leg to finish from outside 50.

Venables (Comparable to Patrick Dangerfield) or Powell-Pepper (comparable to Dustin Martin) could provide just that. These are kind of guys who can make an immediate difference as well as provide long term prospect.

And with potentially one or both being available at our first pick, and having 4 picks inside 31, you'd pull the trigger on one surely.

We haven't traded out an excess player in like...ever.

We need to pay overs to keep any sort of list balance.

The balance has shifted in recent years. Nobody trades for crap anymore. We haven't traded a fringe player, because no one needs to trade to get them.

But we still trade for needs
Not trading out excess players in an unwanted position isn't the same as trading in non needed player types

Not the three vic teams that overlook him?
Prestia went to Richmond after they overlooked him for Conca in 2010. Yeo went to WCE after they overlooked him for Murray Newman in 2011.
The players will almost never give a shit about whether they were overlooked in the draft, especially if it means they get to head back to their home state.

Hadn't watched Maibaum highlights until just now, definitely liked what I saw. He can pinch hit forward and maybe they see a potential big bodied midfielder like Logue has been touted as. So in terms of a balanced draft I'd really like Simpkin, Marshall, Drew & Maibaum with our 4 picks and then another development forward with our last pick.

Meh, Santa is just Satan for dyslexics, and he's probably a cricket fan anyway, never see the b*st*rd except in the off season.

On the plus side, the trade bunny and the draft fairy still exist though. Think Richmond and Melbourne.
