in before they go into huge deficit in the first round tonight matching everyone before 12. then win the premiership and get fined next years picks, picks 40+45.
It'll still mean they won't have any access to decent talent in next year's draft and won't be able to match bids on their academy players next year.

Because he is to good through the middle with his ball use to be played at half back.

That would be the hope, but there just isn't enough evidence of that yet - certainly not enough to quell the fears of the "drafting a flanker and trying to make them a midfielder" brigade, who would have every right to feel nervous/go the melt if we did draft Witherden for this purpose.

Yeah they will, they can go into deficit again, and they won't care.

The AFL made it this year so you had to have list spots available equal to the number of picks you're going to bid with. Which is inconvenient, because as we now know it means you have to have a bunch of spots free on your list at the end of the draft. They won't like that.

However, now that GWS is a top four side and their picks are shitty anyway, they should no longer care about going into deficit next year...its actually better for them to use that draft value from next year instead of this year, because they don't have to free up spots to fill with end-of-draft plodders just because they wanted to match bids. Next year's picks used for matching have no such requirement.

we all know they'll lose a couple nothing picks then trade for picks in the 50's and also a couple picks before the projected academy bids so they still get 3+ elite talents in next year for players like jack steele and Cam McCarthy.

It's worse because GWS has an expanded list size - 46 this year, 44 next year, 42 the year after then the same as everyone else in 2019. That's why they have so many picks that have draft index value.

So they have "live" extra picks to ensure that any deficit can be matched.

They shouldn't be able to use their extra list space to game the draft, but they are.

I think that was changed this year - hence the fire sale. They had to get down to a normal list size and salary cap for next season.

You're right - but they are still gaming the draft this year with their extra list spots.

Thank **** it's the last time they'll be able to do it - probably the reason why they didn't get any penalties this draft.

Picks 1 and 2... we'll pick up Witherden (even if Hayward is available) and Marshall

Picks 3 and 4... if available, either Clarke or SPP, and Maibaum

;)
That certainly goes against Parker's interview. I don't think we'd adequately nail our midfield concerns with that haul, but if we got Barrett as well, then I could live with it.
I'd be a bit meh to that combination of players though overall. Bit of everything whereas we need to be more committed to nailing the midfield this draft.

I agree. But I'm warming to this combination and would be happy enough with it if it eventuated

Is your source the horse itself, or the guy who prepares the bales of hay they feed the neighbouring farm's horse?
Haha. Fair question. If you can dig up my LinkedIn profile and see my connections you'll prob work it out. If not, I'll just say it's multi pronged and usually reliable.

Jack Maibaum

Height: 193cm

Weight: 90kg

AFL bio: Tall defender who consistently nullified the opposition's best tall forward in the NAB AFL under-18 championships showing outstanding agility, poise and clean hands earning All-Australian honours.

"Jack looks a bit like Alex Rance and plays a bit the same, in terms of his mannerisms and movements. He's a big, competitive key defender who's done some massive jobs against some highly rated key forwards. He had one goal kicked against him in five games in the nationals, so he's beaten some guys hands down. He can go forward – he played there exclusively as a junior – and needs to keep improving his balance between attack and defence and provide a bit more rebound, but he hates getting beaten. He's a black belt in karate, he's a natural competitor and he'll just keep adding to his game as he goes."

The AFL is being urged to allow live trading of players as soon as they are recruited in the national draft.

League rules prevent draftees being traded on draft day, requiring them to sign mandatory two-year contracts with the club that picks them.

Gold Coast list manager Scott Clayton supports draft day trading and has raised the concept with the AFL.

"It's a no-brainer," Clayton told News Corp Australia.

"We should be able to trade picks and players selected in the course of the draft.

"If someone picks someone at pick No.4 and you really want them, you go and get them.

Shocking idea! The kids are already just currency on the day. That way they would become cannon fodder for gun-happy recuiters.

Sounds good. Would we have given up pick 9 to come in from 49 to 31 to pick him up though? Maybe we would have to make sure we get our man.

I would like us to take Barrett if the only mids we're taking are Clarke and Witherden.

Yeah, and it doesn't actually improve anything.

Simply having trade week closer to draft week would be a better move right?

Few of the late phantom drafts on the draft board has us taking luke ryan not liam at 31; is there a link?
