Anybody else feeling extremely nervous? This draft is enormous for us... Essential that we nail it
Just this. There's no wriggle room for Parker, Cripps and Hinkley on this one. They must get at least three of the four picks right. We can't afford a 2009 or 2010 result. That's why high risk boom or bust picks in this draft worry me, even if they are for the next blonder Justin Westhoff.

Exactly my thoughts too mate. That's why I'm really against drafting Marshall with pick 17. Too risky I believe. I want more assured guys and midfielders...

I just don't want to know about the draft. I have so much love for Poholke that I don't even want to contemplate missing him. Not liking the conversation this morning which said other clubs were into him.

Having said that I am comfortable with the witherden & Marshall part, just shit scared of 30/31

Would you be happy with 2 of Drew, Mutch, Clarke, and Atley? Seems like that's a pretty realistic get there

I dont honestly get all the love for Witherden, especially when club has said we need midfielders. He hasn't yet shown midfield scope and correct me if I'm wrong but hasnt he said he prefers half back? He sounds a bit like a combo Hartlett/Pittard clone. Are we worried about losing Pittard to free agency and trying to prep early? If the club wants to go midfield heavy, the way to go might be Venables, Hayward, Clarke and Drew. Would be happy with that.

This is why some of the more likely touted picks concern me.

Witherden - HBFer who may be able to play midfield but doesn't have exposed form and reportedly lacks endurance so you'd think his midfield prospects are 50/50. Sounds too much like another Hartlett to me and we've just tried to get rid of him! Definite boom or bust selection for us and what our list needs.

Marshall - I am happy to draft him and think he fills a need, but it's more so on the proviso that we also draft 3 genuine mids with out other picks. My main concern is our inability to develop KPFs and the fact he needs some work! Definite boom or bust but probably worth the risk.

Maibaum - An undersized KPD. We have enough of those already. Our backline is also probably the one area we don't need to worry about this draft. No real boom factor but high risk bust factor!

Simply having trade week closer to draft week would be a better move right?

Having no trade week at all would help make the AFL not look schoolboy. Just set a trade deadline sometime in January/Febraury.

Don't know much about Maibaum...any details please

Jack Maibaum

Height: 193cm

Weight: 90kg

AFL bio: Tall defender who consistently nullified the opposition's best tall forward in the NAB AFL under-18 championships showing outstanding agility, poise and clean hands earning All-Australian honours.

"Jack looks a bit like Alex Rance and plays a bit the same, in terms of his mannerisms and movements. He's a big, competitive key defender who's done some massive jobs against some highly rated key forwards. He had one goal kicked against him in five games in the nationals, so he's beaten some guys hands down. He can go forward – he played there exclusively as a junior – and needs to keep improving his balance between attack and defence and provide a bit more rebound, but he hates getting beaten. He's a black belt in karate, he's a natural competitor and he'll just keep adding to his game as he goes."

Jordan Galucci,
Alex Witherden,
Dylan Clarke and
Brandan Parfitt

Are looking the most likely selections at this stage. I'd be pretty happy with all of those.

I'd love if Jack Graham slid through to our second round pick, Jonty Sharenberg looks a bit of a reach at 31 so I won't be that disappointed if he's left on the board, Will Hayward I think would add a lot to us but he's probably gone at our first pick. Maybe Daniel Venables or Jarrod Berry if they're still there at our first pick would be nice too. I don't think we select a tall at all which is a little confusing but so be it, 4 midfielders would help us play a smaller more running game plan.

Poholke looks very promising from the highlights packages.

Could you see us taking 4 mids?

Witherden/Berry
Powell-Pepper
Poholke
Parfitt

For the draft watchers how does he compare to Garthwaite?

Ok Macca you final selection before the big night!
1 question: Can we take Jake Barrett as a delisted free agent...would stock up our mids.

I feel like we might have done that already if we were interested in him

I dont honestly get all the love for Witherden, especially when club has said we need midfielders. He hasn't yet shown midfield scope ........... If the club wants to go midfield heavy, the way to go might be Venables, ........... Would be happy with that.

Ok I find it ironic that you see Venables with midfield scope and not witherden.

Witherden 2 TAC cup games (21 disposals 7tkles, 1 goals and 9 HBR & 25 disposals, 1.3 goals, 9 HBR)

v

Venables 3 TAC cup games ( 19 disposals, 3 Tkles, 3 goals, 4 HBR - 12 Disposals 5 Tkles, 3 goals, 2 HNR & 7 disposals, 4 Tkles, 1 HBR)

Not even remotely interested in Maibaum. Nice enough player, but the only way I'd be ok with recruiting another KPD would be if they were 195+ cm. As nice players/prospects as Hombsch and Clurey are for KPDs the amount of 198+cm forwards getting around the competitions needs to be considered. KPDs are generally a few cms shorter than KPFs, but that means they should be around 195 cms to match up on the big 2 m types.

Regarding Witherden people need to consider the timing of the broken leg. Basically a whole year of development gone where he could show his midfield game and develop his tank. He's grown 2-3 cm in the last year (being listed as 184/185 last year) so is still a developing body. It's not just the fact that he has great kicking it's his poise in traffic and ability to assess options on the run that set him apart. That could very well translate to having clean hands and movement in congestion which is a key attribute of a good midfielder. Absolutely it's a risk that his midfield scope is unproven but I can definitely see why people are touting it as a possibility.

Jonty Sharenberg looks a bit of a reach at 31 so I won't be that disappointed if he's left on the board,

I don't see that at all. At the start of the season he was in the mix as a top 10 pick and he's had a good year. It's just others have really come on this year and he's stayed as Jonty Scharenberg, a very low-risk pick who plays football really well with no standout features. Suits our list profile as an inside mid and should get AFL games sooner rather than later.
