So his manager says that after a slow start to the season, he knocked back a three year deal, to "assess where his football future would be best served" if he was looking for a trade, surely his manager would have had to have a few clubs (or at least one club) lined up, willing to give him at least a three year deal. Feels like Josh has put too much faith in his manager. Mad not to sign a three year deal, regardless of the contract amount. Especially after a poor start to the season.

Unfortunate for Green that during his time with us he wasnt challeneged to reach his potential. He has a really good feel for footy, just doesnt have the fitness or commitment to make it happen.

Ultimately the club failed him. Our inability to develop, set standards and get the best of players is really starting to hit us hard. Glad to finally see the wheels of change starting to move.

Yeah solid point - although we won't ever know for sure whether the Green or the club that dropped the ball (most likely a combo of both) it's always good to have a viewpoint I hadn't considered before

A family member of his committed suicide last weekend. Think people can ease up on the attacks.

Family tragedies occur all the time. I think we should disassociate family lives from football. I know some posters are emotional beings but I fail to see why someone dying last week should have anything to do with the running joke that he has been totally unfit for years.

Maybe start a thread about player's private lives and those who would like to share their condolences and feel sympathy can post there?

Hey everyone I ran into a few of the senior blokes the other week and a bit of a chat to em. Tommy bell is a great guy by the way. A lot of senior players are stoked Greeny's gone - bone lazy and a few won't be surprised if he doesn't get another gig. Having not really followed too much as of late I might be back on board this year after hearing what they had to say. Also talked a bit about standards and such, they're pretty stoked Fagan is on board, reckon he'll whip the younger blokes into shape apparently they aren't really too flash hot in regards to maintaining standards. They like to drink a lot apparently regularly going out before and after games (the before games thing really surprised me as I thought that was a well thing of the past). At least I think this year one thing we can look forward to is that the young guys will be forced to get the best out of themselves and they're really cracking down on the during season drinking, like that ain't gonna be tolerated anymore.

The players were all brought together for a big honesty session as well and a lot came out then (tbh it sounded like it was that session that was the end for green). I asked them a bit on Rocky but they didn't really say too much other than they think he'll be around for good and didn't have anything bad to say about him either. From the gist of things it seemed Leppa and Lamberts tried a little too hard to cuddle the younger guys and seems there was a bit of angst between the younger and senior players because the younger guys were able to get away with a lot more like drinking and partying a lot for example because there was a big fear about losing them again. Tbh they didn't sound to keen on lambo which surprised me but they're all definitely super excited for Fagan like I mean really really excited, I don't think leppa had that much respect which is unfortunate.

Looks like the Lions are really taking a professional non-bullshit approach this year which got me excited for the future. Anyway thought I'd just pass that onto you all - any questions feel free to ask I know there was more that was said but my memory is a bit hazy hahahah. If I remember anything else that seems important or interesting I'll let you all know but that I'm pretty sure was the bulk of interesting info.

Was there any talk about Pearce Hanley leaving?

thanks Billy Puller

would be interested in the names of as many players as you can remember that were there.

i have spoken to a few players over the years and they are never that open with me, you must have a caring/compassionate face or were they on the turps at the races?

Sherrinator Dunno where your comment went but it was amazing! It's great seeing how other people live and your accent just opens doors for you - people were so much friendlier as soon as they heard me speak! Met so many amazing people had so many good times, good to be home but by the looks of it (popped in every now and again to see how the lions were going) I didn't miss out on too much here hahah.

Sounding good with the senior players. Nobles interview in another thread said 1-4 year players will be back around Nov 5. I'd expect though most of the senior group will return day 1 just to get ahead and really set a standard. Lots of positive news so far.

It was a good time to have other interests, to be frank.

Well like I said they seemed to be sharing a fair bit of optimism for the coming year. I think we can at a bare minimum expect that everyone is getting the best out of themselves which is all we can really ask for as supporters.

Will definitely take an element of doubt out.

Damien Cupido anyone ?

Dont necessarily agree with this.
I grew up training and competing in a completely different sport unrelated to footy. But what i learnt is that some people just do not have the drive to train at a required level. Talent alone, will only get you so far. You may be able get away with it during junior years, but once you hit the big time, if you are not prepared to work for it then you will find yourself falling behind.
Encouragement and pushing people to work hard when they are not accustomed to doing so, will only work for short periods of time as they will always fall back into their bad and life time habits.
Josh Green failed himself. The club is not responsible for everything.
I don't disagree with you but think the team environment does impact on the individual.

In individual it is all about me and all responsibility is on me - what do I need, what time suits my body to train best, coaching at elite level is all 1 on 1 for tactics, motivation and planning sessions at a time that suits the athlete.

The team athlete juggles the individual and team responsibility. Good coaches/ managers/ sport staff manage this conflict and help the player get the balance right and be successful. Alternatively, poor coaching can leave players struggling to the point of failure.

Given the wholesale changes in our coaching support

The bit about the younger ones getting away with more drinking and stuff that the older players is opposite to a lot of what has been posted by the BF posters in the know. I'm confused now.

I don't know anything about that - simply relaying what was said.

I was thinking the same thing. The truth generally lies somewhere in the middle you would think. Regardless there does seem to be a bit of a gap between the senior and junior players and some angst between them. Hopefully the new era will bring them a bit closer together. Mind you the best way to avhieve that is to have some success.

I have often wondered how difficult it would be as a senior player at the lions in recent times. Trying to set standards on and off the field and have the next bunch of uber respectfull kids thinking to themselves 'what has this guy achieved?' 'where are your brownlow medals, premiership medals?'

That is the great difficulty of our situation and the one that Melbourne has faced and Richmond continue to face. You lose touch with success and no one seems to know how to get it. It just becomes theory.

The only way to change that is to bring in people familiar with success and hopefully a couple more of those individuals make it to the club in coming weeks.
