Autopsy 2016 - The Year That Was.

Remove this Banner Ad

Well folks, the sun is slowly setting on 2016. We waited patiently through the summer months for football to return and with Round 19 approaching, we prepare to slog it out again and hope that the magpie is more prosperous in 2017.

After a surprising win against GWS on their home deck, a glimmer of finals appeared, a competitive defeat at the hands of Adelaide and poor effort for the most part against North has well and truly shut the door. So lets reflect on the year that was. What were your positives and negatives for 2016?

With games to come at the MCG against West Coast and Richmond, then two at Etihad against the Bulldogs and Suns, and then back to the G to wrap it all up against Hawthorn, what are you expecting to see and what do you hope we try to achieve heading into the break and pre-season?

I'll kick it off.

POSITIVES -

Treloar, Howe, Aish. Our three recruits. Treloar is worth his weight in gold and has shown exactly why we agreed to GWS' asking price. Howe took a little while to get going, but has had a solid block of consistent football. Aish also took a while to get going, but has slowly and surely built himself up and is starting to contribute more and more. I would give all 3 a tick for the season, now we'll see how they take the next step next year.

Brodie Grundy. I've always been on his wagon rather than Witts. He hasn't been excellent all year, but like Aish, has built on his performances from the week before and his getting reward for effort. He's played on some of the premier ruckman in the comp in the last month and has definitely earned his stripes. His aerobic capacity is elite, he can accumulate possessions (which isn't necessarily a plus given the general efficiency of ruckman, but he's been a fair link up player this year), and more importantly, hes growing in confidence and taking a leap at the ball and starting to win hitouts. Again, like the 3 above, let's see how he goes about taking the next step and hitting a consistent level of performance.

Much maligned, unfairly in my opinion, Brayden Maynard. He has a go, and yes he makes some terribly frustrating errors, but I'm genuinely excited by what this kid offers. I think as he starts to get more games under his belt, he'll continue to grow in his role and find his feet which will then result in a more calculated and calm Brayden Maynard. Not that he'll be aiming for this, but I hope he gets a rising star nomination. I feel he's a worthy candidate, but it's not the end of the world if he doesn't. I think it'd just be deserved recognition and a great confidence booster.

Ben Reid. Such an important player in our side. What Ben has provided this year is no different to what we'd expect. The positive here is that he's been able to stay on the park. Touch wood, he can play out his career without missing many more games.

NEGATIVES -

The whole Travis Cloke debacle. I love Trav, I'm in his corner, but there's still no denying that 2016 has been a major bust. It's been quite a fall from grace, and its actually been building up for a few years but unfortunately for Trav, the breaking point came this year and he had to earn his spot again. A great game against GWS was soured by a ridiculous non-story about a glove, but since that game has again struggled to make an impact. We'll see what the off-season and 2017 holds for Trav.

I've said it plenty of times on this board, slow starts. At least 7-8 games this season, we've been jumped at the start and been fighting a losing battle for the rest of the game. I don't know the reasons why, but I hope we rectify that next season.

The forward line. Out of all the zones, I feel that we struggle the most here. It just hasn't worked for me. All of our zones have struggled at times this year. Can back line can leak goals and be unaccountable? Yes. Does midfield gets outworked and gets smashed in clearances from time to time? Yes. I hope we add to our squad in the off-season with a bit of forward firepower, a small forward or dangerous half forward type. I know we'll get Elliott and maybe Swan back next year which will go a long way too. I know they don't grown on trees, and we probably don't have the currency, but I'd like to see us target a key forward. I can't see Cloke or White being a part of our next premiership side. I don't mind White as a third tall/ second ruck though.

WHAT WOULD I LIKE TO SEE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR -

Win at least 3 out of 5. I still give us a sniff this week. I'd hope we're capable of beating Richmond and GC, but nothing's a certainty.

No serious injuries. Get through the last game unscathed, head into pre-season with majority of the list ready to attack 2017 like a bull at a gate.

In regards to two of my negatives, I hope Trav has a strong finish to the year, and I hope we can avoid being blown out of the water at the start of games. I just want to see us be competitive and at least show some promising signs that we're heading in the right direction next year.

I'm sure there's plenty of negatives and positives that you'll all find. All in all, 2016 has been a disappointing season for the most part. I know we're all passionate, we all have different opinions on what's right and wrong with the club, but we all share the frustration and disappointment of another year with no finals. Let's try and save the facetious comments for another day and assess the season that was.

FLOREAT PICA - GO PIES.

Yes the year feels dissapointing.

Positives: Fasolo, Grundy, Treloar!, Pendlebury, Adams, Reid, Sdebottom, Howe

Ok all things considered: White, Blair, Varcoe, Greenwood, Sinclair, Moore, Ramsay, Smith, Cox, I also think De Goey went ok overall, Maynard the same. Sinclair really earned his spot too.

Dissapointing: Macaffer, Goldsack, Crisp (not like last year sort of ok in parts though), Cloke :(

But overall it's just another medium year with our medium talent laden list.
But who knows a bit of maturity and we might just get a few spots higher.

Be nice also to have more consistency in our starts. More wins straight from the ruck and quickly move ball on!
Be also good if injuries were a lesser issue.
Swan, Elliot, Scahrenberg, Ramsay etc may all be useful.
Swan and Elliot would be something very nice indeed.
Swan is sort of our Mitchell so it hurts.

On to pre season now and drafting and more preseason and it all starts again.

Still have 5 Games to go.

Results does not really matter know but hopefully we can at Least beat Bitchmond:thumbsu: also I would love IF we created a Boil Over and Beat the Hawks to end the Season

Like they beat us last round 2010, when we were on our way to a flag.

Agree with most except outside the forwards structuring up properly, we seriously need to get the middle right and get first use of the ball!

Brodie's aerobic capacity elite...? You joke, right? Last by a long way in each time trial I have seen....

I think all our Aqusations over the Trade/Draft Period have all at least shown Promise:

  • Treloar - Was Huge in the 1st Half of the Season. Fallan off a bit in 2nd but still just about our best player nearly every week
  • Howe - Did not start well with the Injury to his hand and Possible Lying about it but has come in and Played very well down back. Played the Role we where hoping Scharanberg was going to Play.
  • Aish - Had a Very Poor start but dropped to the VFL and dominated in VFL as Midfield. Then came back and keep getting Better since Returning. Exciting how good he can become
  • Sier - Not done a Lot but showed bit in VFL. Seems a Good Kick and Good around Clearnce
  • Wills - Dominating in the VFL but not got a Game Yet
  • Phillips - Doing very well at VFL Level and played 3 Games at AFL where he was Solid in 2 and Good in 1 of them
  • Crocker - Been Very Good in VFL. Very Strong Mark and Kicking Goals. Played AFL early then Expected but did a Good Job
  • Smith - Been very Reliable at AFL Level.
That is a Very Good Recurting Class

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since a time trial in the preseason. Have you seen the way he gets around the ground? Especially in the last month. He's outworked the likes of Goldstein, Jacobs and Mumford in the respective games.

The biggest disappointment for me was after all the hype pre-season and looking forward to the year, our season was over 4 rounds in. After that Melbourne loss I didn't really care anymore. Did wonders for my footy tipping.

Yeah, the Elliott one is massive. It's really been a pretty sour season, starting right when Dane Swan broke his foot.

Corey Gault is another negative too I think. The February specialist struck again, teased us with some NAB cup form and flopped. Not AFL standard obviously.

Not even VFL Level

Positives:
Treloar + Howe
Grundy
Fasolo
Beat Richmond round 2
Finally found a decent backline mix

Negatives:
The zone
Injuries
Poor disposal.. Again.
Awful game plan
Many players out of form
Handball until we get tackled
Lack of movement from forwards
Lack of running both ways
Clearences
Forward structure
Losing to Carlton
Playing poorly for a month then having a decent two week period and Buckley pretending everything is fine, talks us up then another poor month
Team Selection
Backline mix was wrong for way too long
Missing finals... Again
Cloke

What I would like to see happen from here:
Big changes to personal; coaches, recruiters, doctors, fitness people
Delist the plodders
Look to trade out players who have gone stale
Recruit some older players with class, we were way too young this year.
Address our team needs during trade and draft period.

The biggest negative for me was the injury to Dane Swan, I'm not expecting him to play next year but would have loved to see him go out on top and under his own terms. I would be keen to see him go around one more time as long he is a genuine contributor. Elliott was the other but he has time with his career (injury pending)

The other negative was the whole Cloke saga, hope he gets his chance over the next 5 weeks.

Positives: I was pretty sure Treloar was a great get but a little unsure with Howe, pretty happy he came across. I like the way Aish is developing and would put him on the positive side of the ledger right now, let's see how he finishes the year.

I gave Cox no chance, so a positive for me
Moore is coming along and showing some very positive signs
Smith contributed and had him further down the list for a start than the others.
Fasolo starting to show some genuine class
Ben Reid was back to where he should be and looking forward to Shaz learning the ropes next year from him.

What would I like to see for the rest of the year
  • Obviously would love to win as many as possible, Hawthorn in the last would be nice (with our best 22 on the park)
  • Massive return to form for Cloke
  • Swan to announce one more year
  • Elliott's back to be given the all clear
  • Aish to spend genuine time in the middle
  • Some time into: Broomhead, Witts, Wills, Crocker, Phillips, Goodyear, (We need to see where these guys are at)
  • A few retirements: C. Wilson, W. Carey, Slobbo to name a few.
